Message From Your Administrator Team
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. We are excited to continue the journey as your Administrator Team and look forward to your partnership as families and community members.
As we move forward into this new school year, we know that there are many opportunities to enrich the teaching and learning experience for all stakeholders here at Parkland. Our current work, the School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-being (SIPSA), is centered around two main goals:
1. If students are invited to explore their social identities and lived experiences by making connections to and through curricula via culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy then they will feel affirmed, respected and connected to the learning they are engaged in.
2. If students are invited to engage in the assessment AS learning process (through conversation, observation and products) and staff respond to diverse learning needs (i.e. through differentiated instruction, descriptive feedback, etc.) then students will have access to resources (i.e success criteria, strong/weak samples, etc.) and strategies (i.e. advocate, reflect, etc.) for addressing their next steps.
We look forward to continuing to engage staff, students and families in our school priorities in order to promote a schooling and working experience that is inviting, enriching and inspiring.
Yours in partnership,
Pamela and Tisha - Principal and Vice Principal

Safety Week - September 25-28
1. Emergency Preparedness All public elementary and secondary schools across the region will be featuring activities and events that highlight various facets of safety at school and in the community. Students will be participating in a wide variety of emergency preparedness exercises including a lock down, fire drill and school bus evacuation. In advance of the drills, we will review protocols and expectations during an emergency with all students, staff and affected partners. 2. Caring and Safe Schools
During Safety Week our students and staff will also engage in conversations around caring, safe and inclusive school environments. In a school assembly, we will explore the elements that would support the academic achievement and well-being of all students, including:
● Demonstrating positive character attributes (such as empathy, courage and respect for human rights and inclusivity)
● Items and behaviours that are not allowed on school property (such as e-cigarettes and scented products)
● What happens in situations of discipline ● Standing up for each other in bullying
situations, including methods of reporting incidents of bullying (i.e., tell a caring adult, use the YRDSB’s “Report It Button” located on our school website or call Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-6868).
You can also visit the YRDSB’s Caring and Safe Schools website for details and resources to support families in continuing the conversation.
3. Safe Arrival
The York Region District School Board recognizes that monitoring student attendance is the joint responsibility of parents/guardians and school staff. Communication between parents/guardians, students and school staff members is essential to ensuring student safety. Each school will establish a safe arrivals program and a safe departures protocol to promote and support student safety. In the interest of ensuring your child’s safety, we ask that you cooperate with us by following the steps below if your child is absent or is expected to be absent in the near future:
● If a future absence has been planned, please inform your child’s teacher by note, giving the date and length of time of the expected absence. In all other cases, please call 905-472-8536 to inform the office or leave a message concerning your child’s absence on the answering machine.
If a child is not in school, and the school office has not received any notification from the parents, the school will take the following steps:
● Call the student’s home. If we do not reach you at home, we will call your work and/or cell phone numbers.
● If we cannot reach you at work, we will call your emergency contact numbers.
● If we are not able to obtain information from your emergency contact regarding your child’s whereabouts, we will speak to a sibling, if one is in the school.
● If we are not able to obtain any information, we will consider your child missing and will contact the York Region Police.

Nut Free Please
Parkland Public School strives to be a nut safe school. Parents are asked to inform the office if their child has an allergy and whether they need an epi-pen. Please send nut-free snacks and lunches to school to keep all of our students safe.
Bus Loop Reminders
In order to support the safe arrival of our students, and the timely arrival of school buses, families are reminded that there is no parking in the bus loop. Drivers are asked to unload their children as carefully as possible without parking or getting out of their cars. Should you desire to walk your child to their designated waiting area, please park on one of the side streets and walk to Parkland. Your support with walking to school whenever you can is greatly appreciated.
