This workshop wi l l gather a group of scholars working on the Mamluk domes of Cairo alongside a number

of MIT facul ty and researchers interested in domical structures. Drawing upon recent archaeological

d iscover ies and new digi ta l techniques of representat ion, the part ic ipants wi l l br ing our knowledge of

these outstanding domes up to date. The focus wi l l be on their structural invent iveness, the shi f t in their

construct ion mater ia l , and the incremental complexi ty in their decorat ion, as wel l as their archi tectural and

urban signi f icance.
