The origin of Cantonese 在正式介紹粵語之前，首先要談一下廣東三大主要

方言。它們包括「廣東話」、「客家話」 及「閩南話」，而其中又以廣東話為主流。一般稱為「粵語」，不過在習慣上叫「廣東話」，另外又可稱為「廣府話」或「白話」。廣東話是廣東、廣西大部分地區、港澳地區以及海外華人社區的主要交流語言，目前全球使用粵語的人口達 7000 萬，在經濟社會生活中佔據重要地位。

粵語源自戰國的楚語，時百越為楚所治，楚語由兩湖傳入廣東，其後逐漸發展。一般比較公認的說法是以粵語近於隋唐語言。廣東一直以來是中國一個主要港口之一，尤以明清兩代，歐洲人利用新航路來華漸多，廣東對外接觸日趨頻繁，受外來文化影響不斷增加，重要性也日益提高。隨著港澳地區發展，港澳地區的粵語也逐漸成為主流，亦成為了港澳地區的母語。
