UnderThe Sea
Brunei has golf courses to accommodate the most committed of golfing enthusiasts, so we hope you brought along your golf set! Green fees in Brunei is comparatively cheap, so if you’re looking to play a round of golf or maybe just spend some time on the putting green, this is the place for you.
The waters off the Sultanate’s coast are a diver’s paradise, with vast coral reefs and gorgeous marine life. A 15-minute catamaran-ride will bring you to beautiful reefs like Brunei Patch and Clownfish Avenue while the wreck dives are scattered between Brunei and the Malaysian island of Labuan. The shipwrecks are teeming with sea life and as you weave over the decks, you’ll swim alongside cardinalfishes, yellow-tailed barracudas, peacock groupers and red snappers. Local dive operators have activities packaged for the experienced and new divers, but if you prefer activities above water, they have options of water sports and activities.

1 Visit Kampong AyerKampong Ayer, or
Water Village, is a township of multi-coloured houses built on stilts over the Brunei River. Take a boat ride through the narrow waterways between the myriad colourful houses and take a peek into the unique lifestyle of the residents there. Make sure you visit the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery.
Visit the MosquesIslam is the state religion
of Brunei and the mosques are the most prominent landmarks that portray the strong Islamic influences in the country’s rich culture. Most prominent are the beautiful mosques around Brunei. Visit the magnificent Masjid Omar Ali Saifuddien at the heart of the city’s capital, the ornate Jame’ Asr
Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque or the charming
Ash-Shaliheen Mosque.
Take a Day Trip to SeriaDrive to Seria town -
about an hour and a half drive from Bandar Seri Begawan. This is the economic heartland of Brunei, home of the nation’s oil industry. To see where it all began, visit the town of Seria and watch the rows of “nodding donkeys”, go to the Oil & Gas Discovery Centre, an interactive science centre showcasing exhibitions on the petroleum industry, see ‘nodding donkeys’ that are scattered around town and take photo at the Billionth Barrel Monument. Then drive a little further to the nearby Kuala Belait town for a meal.

Taste the Local Delights
Local sweet and savoury snacks such as tapai, wajid, pulut panggang, buahulu and penyaram can be found at the outdoor tamu markets. For a quick and cheap meal try the Nasi Katok – a simplified form of nasi lemak wrapped in brown paper – a meal that is available almost anywhere. But for a truly local gastronomical experience, go to Tarindak D’Seni at Jln Kota Batu and try the ambuyat.
Take a Mangrove TourHire a water taxi at the jetty in the city center and
take a cruise down the mangrove-lined waterways. Watch the many birds and
animals that live in the mangrove trees, including the elusive proboscis monkey – a true Bornean native!
Go to TemburongTour the pristine rainforest at the Ulu Temburong National
Park – the conservation ground of our rainforests. Here you can take jungle treks, longboat rides down the river lined by mangrove swamps, or climb up 800 steps to the top of the canopy walk and enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the rainforest.
4 Visit the Royal Palace during Hari Raya Aidilfitri
On the 2nd, 3rd and 4th day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the Istana Nurul Iman opens its doors to the public. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei and members of the royal family, who greet every visitor during these three days, and also to take a peek inside the largest residential palace in the world.
5 Visit the Empire Hotel & Country ClubNo visit to Brunei is
complete without a visit to the palatial Empire Hotel & Country Club, one of Brunei’s finest treasures. Have a meal at one of the restaurants, visit the private beach, play a round of golf, catch a movie, lounge by one of the swimming pools or indulge the senses at the hotel spa.

Islamic EtiquetteAlthough Islam is the state
religion of Brunei Darussalam, it is also a country that prides itself on the diversity of its people – including their religions. Visitors are welcome in the mosques, however, proper attire is required; women are required to cover their head, shoulders, and knees. Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs – particularly inside! Mosques are usually closed on Thursday and Friday, and during prayer times.
Friday PrayersAll banks, businesses, offices,
places of interest, retail, food and beverage outlets are closed between 12 noon and 2pm on Fridays to observe the Friday prayer time for Muslims.
BanksBanks are usually open
Mondays to Fridays, 9am - 4pm and on Saturdays, 9am - 11am. Some banks have branches with later closing times. Cash withdrawals and deposits
can be made from Automated Teller Machines (ATM) that can be found in various shopping complexes and bank branches all over the country. ATM cards affiliated with the international Plus or Cirrus systems are accepted at most ATMs.
Credit CardsThey are widely accepted
in hotels, restaurants and major shopping complexes. Most widely accepted cards are VISA and MasterCard. Some establishments accept American Express.
Lost/Stolen Passports and Credit Cards
If you ever do find your passport missing, go to the nearest police station to lodge a police report and inform your embassy to seek further assistance. If your credit cards get lost, make sure you call your bank to cancel the cards immediately.
Money ChangerThis service is available at
the airport, banks, hotels and some licensed money changers. To cash or exchange travelers cheques, visit major international banks in the capital.
Tourist Information CentreLocated at the Kg. Ayer
Cultural and Tourism Gallery. Visitors can obtain information about Brunei and related pamphlets and maps free from here during working hours Mon-Thurs & Saturday (9am – 12:15pm & 1:30pm – 4:30pm except Fridays 11:30am - 2pm). Visiting hours are from 9am – 4:30pm (Mon-Sun except Fridays 11:30am - 2pm).
BusesThere are six bus routes
servicing the BSB area. Normal operating hours are from 6am - 8pm. Bus fares start from B$1.00. Buses heading to other towns in Brunei such as Tutong, Kuala Belait and Seria depart from the bus terminal located at the multi-storey carpark on Jalan Cator in Bandar Seri Begawan.
TaxisTaxis can be found at
the airport, hotels, shopping centres, and the central bust station in Bandar Seri Begawan. There are no metered taxis
Money Remittance/ Transfer
Transferring money overseas can be done at all major banks or remittance agencies in Brunei.
TelecommunicationsMost public phones
operate on phone cards and prepaid cards. These cards can be purchased at Telbru counters and authorised dealers. Prepaid calling cards for the two mobile telephone operators, DST and Progresif Cellular, can be purchased from their respective authorised dealers in all major shopping areas.

in Brunei, therefore it is advisable to negotiate your fare before getting into one. For your convenience it is also recommended to take your preferred taxi driver’s number to pre-book your trips.
Water TaxisUnique to Brunei, the
water taxi is the most common means of transportation in Kampong Ayer. You can hail a water taxi from the numerous jetties along the banks of Brunei River. The water taxi is an ideal way to view the water village up close. Fares are negotiable but usually a standard ride costs about B$1.00. Regular boat services to Temburong operate between 7.45am to 4pm daily and a round trip costs B$15.00.
Ferry ServicesPassenger ferry services to
the Malaysian island of Labuan operate from 7am to 4pm and departs from the Serasa Terminal in Muara town. The journey takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
