The Winter's Tale

1- Discuss the friendship between Leontes and Polixenes.

Leontes and Polixenes were friends since childhood. When they were

young they were best friends. Over the years they did not see each

other because of their many responsibilities as kings, but they still

exchanged gifts and sent friendly letters. Finally Polixenes was able

to travel and visit Leontes in Sicilia. Leontes was very happy to have

his friend staying as a guest and he did not want him to leave for

Bohemia.

2- Why did Leontes and Polixenes stay many years without seeing

each other?

Leontes and Polixenes are childhood friends but they didn't see each

other for years as their royal duties as kings prevented them.

3- "What about you, my wife, my queen, can you convince our

friend to stay a little bit." Comment.

Leontes said this to his wife, Hermione. Leontes' best friend from

childhood, King Polixenes , was visiting but he said that he couldn't

stay away from his kingdom longer. Leontes didn't want his friend to

leave and tried very hard to persuade him to stay.

He asked his wife to try to convince Polixenes to stay longer.

Hermione was able to do what her husband couldn't: she convinced

Polixenesn to stay.

4- "Very well, I will keep you here as a prisoner! What do you say to

that? Prisoner or guest?" Comment.

Hermione said this to Polixenes when her husband asked her to

persuade him to extend his visit for a couple of days more. Hermione

walked with him around the large room, away from Leontes and tried

to convince him to stay. She told him that he had to choose how he

would like to stay longer, by force as their prisoner or gently as their

guest. This shows that Hermione declared their friendly deep

intention of keeping Polixenes with them longer. By saying this,

Polixenes decided to extend his visit.

5- How did Leontes feel when Hermione convinced Polixenes to

extend his visit?

When Hermione succeeded to convince Polixenes to stay, Leontes

was immediately overcome with an uncountable feeling of jealousy.

He thought that Polixenes and Hermiome deceived him by being in

love with each other.

6- "My wife is slippery. You must have noticed this."Comment.

Leontes said this to Camillo explaining to him how he had been

deceived. When Leontes, Polixenes best friend couldn't convince him

to stay, he asked Hermione to do. Just then when her words worked

quickly on Polixenes and she persuaded him to stay longer for the

sake of her husband. Loentes sank in an uncountable feeling of

jealousy.

7- "My good Lord, I hope you can be cured of this terrible idea." Comment.

Camillo said this to Leontes when they were talking about Hermione

and Polixenes and watching them walking in the garden in a friendly

way. Camillo wasn't convinced that they were in love and tried hard to

make Leontes change his mind and get rid of his awful thoughts.

8- Did Camillo agree to poison Polixenes? Why?

Camillo agreed to help Polixenes, because he is his king and he

wanted to help him rest from all these bad thoughts and suspicions.

However Camillo didn't agree with the king's accusation, he decided

to help him.

9- "I have authority to help you and your men escape. And as for myself,

I'll have to leave this kingdom too, for helping you." Comment.

10- Did Camillo try to poison Polixenes ? What did he do?

No, he didn't. He told Polixenes everything and helped him to

escape.

1- Why did Polixenes and Camillo go to Bohemia?

Camillo was one of Leontes' lord. Leontes told him that he suspected

his wife of being unfaithful and ordered Camillo to poison Polixenes.

Camillo didn't want to kill an innocent man. Instead of obeying his

4- Did the lords believe that Hermione was guilty of treason? Why?

No, the lords didn't believe that Hermione was guilty because they

never noticed anything wrong on her attitude with Polixenes. In

addition to her perfect attitude as a Queen of Sicilia.

5- "Your justice might hurt yourself, your queen and your son." Comment.

Antigonus, a nobleman of Sicilia, husband of Paulina, said this to the

King Leontes. When the king ordered to send Hermione to prison and

the lords were against this. Antigonus tried to convince the king that

he was wrong and he had to change his mind because Hermione was

innocent and hadn't done anything wrong. Antigonus also was

concerned about Hermione and Mamillius, Leontes' son.

6- What did Leontes send Cleomenes and Dion to do?

Leontes sent the two men to oracle of Apollo. He had sent his wife,

Hermione, to prison. He had no doubt in his mind that she was guilty

of treason, along with Polixenes and Camillo, but he wanted some

proof that would make other people believe it as well. At the oracle,

the men would receive an answer about the guilt or innocence of all

involved.

7- "I will argue on her behalf. The king might soften at the sight of

the baby. The silence of the pure, innocent baby might convince,

if my words do not." Comment.

Paulina said this. She was a close servant to Hermione, and the wife

of Antigonus. While Hermione was in prison she gave birth. Paulina

thought that if she brought the baby to Leontes, the sight of his new

born child might help him change his mind. Paulina took the baby to

him, but her plan didn't work. Leontes ordered Antigonus to take the

baby away to some deserted place.

8- What happened to Mamillius, Leontes son? Why?

When Mamillius, the young son of Hermione and Leontes heard

about the awful accusation of his mother. He took the shame on

himself, he lost all of his spirit, he also lost his appetite, stopped

sleeping, and he was wasting away.

9- What was Leontes reaction when he saw the baby girl?

Paulina took the baby girl to Leontes and she told him that the good

queen brought him a beautiful girl. She asked him his blessing. But

Leontes was very angry when he saw the baby and asked to take her

away. He refused to look at the baby and see how pretty she was. He

ordered the men to take her away or he would have her burnt.

10- What did the king order Antigonus to do with the baby?

Leontes was very angry when he saw the baby and asked to take her

away. He refused to look at the baby and see how pretty she was.

So, first Leontes ordered Antigonus to put the baby in the fire or he

would be killed. But Antigonus refused to kill such an innocent baby

this way and begged him to save this child. So Leontes changed his

mind, he ordered him to carry the baby some faraway and deserted

place, away from his kingdom in the middle of nowhere for the

chance to be saved or died.
