THE SOLAR SYSTEM This is our Solar System. There are eight planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. All the planets revolve around a star. We call this star the Sun. Each planet follows its own path around the sun. We call this path an orbit.

The sun gives heat and light to all the planets. The closest planet to the sun is Mercury. It is the hottest planet in the Solar System. The farthest planet from the sun is Neptune. It is the coldest planet in the Solar System. The biggest planet is Jupiter. The smallest planet is Mercury.

The planet we live on is Earth. It is between Venus and Mars. It takes 365 days for the Earth to complete one orbit, or one trip around the sun. This is how we measure a year.
