Name: ______________________________________________________________________ Block: ________________________ Ceramics I Mrs. Holtz & Mrs. Duckworth The history of pottery dates back millennia. People around the world have fired or baked moist clay to make pots, plates and ceramic decorations since prehistoric times. Their creations were not only aesthetic, but also functional… and each form served a specific purpose. Your Task: You will research pottery from various periods in history, analyze how form worked with function, and then create your own culturally inspired ceramic dish set. You will use the coil construction method along with a slump/hump mold technique. Your mugs will show inspiration from historic forms but have an updated design with modern elements. Your final set will include a mug and bowl or plate. What is a set? It is a collection of articles designed for use together, and have a similar nature, design, or function. These pieces display a unity in design and clearly relate to each other. PLANNING PART #1 – The Mug: 1. Research ceramics mug forms and handle designs and print ones you find interesting. 2. Complete Worksheet #1: Mug Form and Worksheet #2: Handle Designs PLANNING PART #2 – The Dish: 3. Research ceramic plate, bowl or tray designs and print ones you find interesting. As you research, think about the kind of set you want to make, and what dish shapes or functions will work with the mug forms you have already researched. 4. Complete Worksheet #3: Dish Form PLANNING PART #3 – The Pattern & Design: 5. First, research ceramic pieces that were created using the slump or hump mold process. This will help you understand the process. Print images of designs, forms or patterns that appeal to you. 6. Next, look at coil pottery where the coils have not been smoothed and blended together on the outside of the form. Print images of designs that you like. 7. Finally, research ALL of the following cultures and their related pottery and print ones you find interesting. * Greek * Pueblo * Mimbre * Hopi * Navajo * Zumi * Mesop * Minoan 8. Once the above research is done, complete Worksheet #4: Coil Patterns & Designs and Worksheet #5: Finishing Patterns and Designs COIL DISH SET Cultural INSPIRATION; Modern Twist

The  history  of  pottery  dates  back  millennia. PLANNING  PART  #1  –  The  Mug:

1. Research  ceramics  mug  forms  and  handle  designs  and  print  ones  you  find  interesting.  2. Complete  Worksheet  #1:  Mug  Form  and  Worksheet  #2:  Handle  Designs

PLANNING  PART  #2  –  The  Dish:

4. Complete  Worksheet  #3:  Dish  Form    PLANNING  PART  #3  –  The  Pattern  &  Design:

Once  the  above  research  is  done,  complete  Worksheet  #4:  Coil  Patterns  &  Designs  and

COIL DISH SET Cultural INSPIRATION; Modern Twist

Page 2: Coil Dish Set Project

PLANNING  PART  #4  –  The  Final  Set:  9. Look  back  at  all  of  your  research,  references,  ideas  and  sketches  and  put  it  all  together  for  a

final  set.    Consider  what  shapes,  forms  and  patterns  will  work  best  together.    10.  Complete  Worksheet  #6:  Final  Set  Drawing.    This  drawing  should  include:

a. Your  best  mug  form  b. Your  best  handle  design  c. Your  best  plate/bowl/tray,  etc.  shape  and  form  d. An  area  of  unblended  coils  e. An  area  with  a  finishing  pattern  using  sgraffito,  texture  or  underglaze  f. Any  details  or  embellishments  g. Clean  lines  and  show  how  your  final  set  will  look

   THE  CONSTRUCTION:

11.  Begin  by  rolling  several  coils  using  high  fire  Cone  6  clay.    These  coils  should  be  kept  under  damp  towel  at  all  times  and  will  be  used  to  create  your  mug  and  dish.

12.  First  create  your  mug  using  the  process  and  techniques  demonstrated.      13.  Then  you  will  create  your  hump  or  slump  mold  dish  using  the  process  demonstrated.    14.  Add  any  details  or  embellishments  you  decide:  handles,  feet,  textural  designs,  etc.    15.  When  leatherhard  you  will  repair  any  mistakes  left  from  the  mold  or  blending  process  and

then  add  your  sgraffito  or  underglaze  design.

TIPS  &  THINGS  TO  CONSIDER:    • How  do  you  want  your  two  pieces  to  work  together?  Will  the  shapes  or  patterns  be  unified?    • Will  your  design  be  symmetrical  or  asymmetrical?    • Will  your  design  be  geometric  or  organic?    • Do  you  want  the  unblended  coils  on  your  dish  to  be  on  the  inside  or  the  outside?    • Will  you  add  embellishments  to  your  dish  or  mug?    • Roll  practice  coils  and  unblended  patterns  to  be  sure  your  design  will  work.    • Make  ALL  of  your  coils  first,  and  make  them  the  same  size  and  thickness.
