WELCOME LETTER

It is both an honor and a pleasure for the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) to organize the 22nd IUBMB & 37th FEBS Congress. The standards of modern Spain in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are historically high. Attesting to this fact, the SEBBM is a very active organization encompassing 21 interest groups and more than 4000 members. SEBBM, one of FEBS founding societies, has already organized two successful FEBS meetings (Madrid, 1969, and Barcelona, 1996). And now Seville, being an ancient, beautiful and welcoming city, home to a very dynamic biochemical community, will host for the very first time this unique and joint IUBMB-FEBS event.

Based on recent spectacular advances in “-omic” disciplines and informa-tion technology, multidisciplinarity and integration have become key fea-tures of post-genomic and proteomic research. Genes, gene products, their regulatory networks and their interactions with their environment must be analyzed not only at the molecular level, but also as components of higher-order structures, metabolic pathways or entire cells and organisms. This branch of research, termed “Systems Biology”, combines concepts in a ho-listic approach from molecular biology, engineering sciences, mathematics and information technology to complex biological systems such as living cells. Hence, close collaboration between biologists, biochemists, physiolo-gists, chemists, physicists and mathematicians is essential in order to ex-pand molecular studies into the characterization and modeling of complex interactions of genes, proteins and metabolic processes.

In line with these advances, an extraordinary scientific program that com-prehensively covers the latest advances in bioscience research has been arranged. Multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity are thus essential characteristics of this meeting.

The Organization has worked intensively to make this Congress a most out-standing experience that lives up to the highest expectations of the par-ticipant colleagues. We are convinced that this meeting will offer a singular opportunity for the attendees to engage in fruitful discussions, as well as establish new friendships and collaborations.

KEY INFORMATION

Congress Venue

The Congress is held at the Seville Conference and Exhibi-tion Centre (FIBES), close to the city's international airport.

FIBES is strategically situated at 4 km from Seville´s interna-tional airport, 5 km from Santa Justa Train Station, and 7 km from the city center. A taxi ride takes 10 min to the airport ( 20-25), 15 min to the train station ( 6-8), and 20 min to downtown ( 8-10).

How to reach FIBES

Transport

The Commuter Train C4 runs every 6 minutes all day long from Santa Justa Station to Palacio de Congresos (FIBES). A round-trip ticket costs only 2.10 ( 1.40 one way).

The bus line 27 runs very frequently as well, especially during rush hours, from and to the Meeting Venue (FIBES). You can buy the ticket on board for 1.30.

Taxis

Taxis are all around the city, and are white with a diagonal yel-lowish stripe on the side back door. A taxi fare to the airport should cost approximately 20-25.

Poster Discussion Sessions

Posters will be presented by the authors and displayed at the Exhibitor Area. Three sessions will take place throug-hout the Congress, as shown in the ta-ble on the right.

Please note that presenters are respon-sible for putting up the posters on the corresponding board before each session, and removing them at the end of the day (not later than 20:00 h).

The maximum size of poster boards is 120 cm (length) × 90 cm (width).

The poster numbers will be displayed on the poster boards, abstract book and each poster presenter’s private area on the congress website.

Biochemistry in the City

A number of parallel events open to the general public have been organized to coincide with the international congress. Their aim is to bring Biochemistry closer to peo-ple by explaining its impact on various facets of society, and to inspire the biochemists of tomorrow.

"And You? Me, a Biochemist!"Twenty fi ve of the best high school students from the pro-vince of Seville will be invited to participate in a three day course aimed to provide a general outlook of Biochemistry as a career path. The course will consist of three parts:

1. A lecture at the Faculty of Biology on how to achieve a Biochemistry degree at the University of Seville and on the subsequent career possibilities.

2. A visit to the congress venue, the Seville Conference and Exhibition Centre FIBES, to get to know how an international congress looks like. There, the students will receive lectures by Spanish invited Speakers.

3. A short, hands-on training course on DNA extrac-tion so these students can participate actively in the “Genes in the Bottle” sessions (see below).

The students will receive a certifi cate of their participation by the University of Seville at the end of the course.

Genes in the BottleThe general public from the streets of Seville will be invited to participate in this activity. They will learn the basic process to isolate their own DNA and fi nd out some of the fascinating aspects of these molecules.

Specific Activities

The specifi c activities aim to promote discussion amongst delegates, corporate partners, and exhibitors.

Corporate Seminars Corporate partners will be able to present new products, share information with delegates, and receive feedback.

Guided Poster TourAttendees wishing to participate will be divided in small groups, maximum 10 people. Each group will visit their posters guided by an Invited Speaker. These guided poster tours aim to:

1. increase the visibility of the posters, 2. facilitate the exchange between speakers and poster

presenters, and 3. promote scientifi c discussions during poster sessions.

This voluntary activity required the registration of inter-ested congress attendees during the online registration process.

Speakers’ CornerInvited speakers will be available for informal discussion and debate at a predefi ned meeting room. The speakers available will rotate according to the list of speakers of the day. Everybody is welcome!

Portrait GalleryThe Portrait Gallery aims to honour 24 outstanding female scientists who played crucial roles in the development of Biochemistry worldwide. Each woman will have her own exhibition panel with her photo and biography both in English and in Spanish.

Women Career Lunch This informal lunch with outstanding female scientists will allow young participants to discuss diffi culties they may fi nd during their career development and talk about alter-native solutions. The sign-up sheet will be available at the FEBS stand (booth: 21), and only the fi rst 60 registrants will be able to attend. This activity will take place at the Congress venue on Saturday, September 8, from 13:00 to 15:00, so everybody has time to go to the subsequent Women in Biochemistry Workshop starting at 15:30.
