MYTH

Myth- refers to traditional story that tackles major subjects such as the origin of the world, humanity and its traditions

- explains the beliefs and history of people

* its storyline usually deals with magical or fantastic events, deities, and creatures

According to Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, myths have four functions in any society:

1. Metaphysical Function- allows the individual to be awakened to the wonders of life and the universe

2. Cosmological Function

- aims to present an image of the universe to explain its different phenomena

3. Social Function

*Each society has a set of rules regarding what is right and wrong or proper and improper, and these are reflected on its myths.

- aims to validate the moral order of a society

4. Pedagogical Function

- aims to teach each member of a particular society about how to live a human life
