Ganesh Murti Nagar Slums

The Ganesh Murti Nagar Slums are located near Cuffe Parade in Colaba. There slums in these areas are quite sunny, colorful and open.

Population • About 80,000 people live in a three to four km square.• Crowded most of the time and there was very little space in the lanes.• There was a 60% Muslims 40% Hindus ratio.

Occupation: Mostly people are working as fishermen and other population goes to near by places for work. There are also personal shops i.e. medical shops, scrap shops, poultry, etc.

• Housing: Each person or family has a 14x15 foot home that is usually made with concrete and corrugated metal for a roof.There is a place to cook and a sink to do some washing in each of the homes.The homes are often painted in colours such as bubblegum pink, bright blue or aqua and potted plants hang in front of the doors.Some doors have dried citrus skins and red chili peppers to protect from the Evil Eye while others have religious decorations. Each home requires a deposit of at least 10,000-20,000 rupees and there is a waiting list as the homes are much in demand. Rent is about 3,000 rupees a month and between 80,000 people, there are seven public toilets.

• Cultural activities: There are nine Temple one is big temple of shiva with a huge 

shivling right at the centre of the temple surrounding with a  channel which takes the pored milk outside.

And at various places there are small photos of sai baba on a wall. 

There is 3 mosque in this area.

•Toilets: there seven common toilets near the area               Mens- there are 8 indian toilets and 6 unirals 4 baths. 

      Womens- there are 12 indian toilets 4 baths.Fresh water is available for an hour each day, but the ration cards for water are given not by the government, but by the politicians. And, you only receive a ration card for water as long as you promise to give that politician your vote and copies of the documents for your home (which will then go to contracters who can flatten the slums to make high rises if they have enough of these documents). Those who do not wish to receive ration cards from the politicians can get their water elsewhere.

• Amenities: General shop: There were general stores which sold grains, soaps and other daily use commodities when interviewed one of the shopkeeper he said that they generally update their stock in 2 to 3 weeks.•  Medical shops, garage(4 garage 2 wheeler )(2 garage 4wheeler), water pump station(water only available for 2 hours once in the morning and once in the evening).

Economic activities:   Import and Export of fishes.

 Also cloth bags. There were small work shop where men were making leather 

bags and cloth bags, when asked about these so they said that  they were made by custom orders from their bosses. 

Also there were small shops where they collected  metal from around the area and sold it. 

Ladies sitting on the floor were selling stolen things too
