Inviting Someone to Do Something

verb + ませんか

The 「verb + ませんか」pattern is used to invite someone to do something. You can

use the「verb + ませんか」(= the present tense negative verb, plus the question particle

“か”) to extend an invitation. It should be noted that its affirmative counterpart, “ますか”,

cannot be so used. Thus a sentence like 「あさくさに いきますか。」can only be

construed as a question, not as an invitation.

Appropriate replies for the invitation are as follows.

1. Acceptance :

a.

b.

Yes, let’s [verb].

ええ/はい、 *verb stem + ましょう。e e / h a i m a s h o u

*verb stem = remove “ます” from the “ます form” verb

Yes, I’d love to.

ええ/はい、 ぜひ。e e / h a i z e h i

2. Refusal :

I’m sorry, but it wouldn’t be convenient (for me at this moment).

Then once you are almost certain of your listener’s intention and there is already

a situation or a context where something is expected, 「verb stem + ましょうか」

(= the acceptance reply of “let’s [verb]”, plus the question particle “か”) is used.

Shall we [verb]?
