New York - New York was founded in 1624 by the Dutch, who called it New Amsterdam. In 1664 the English gained control and changed the name to New York. In 1898 several towns were combined to make Greater New York City, which became the second largest city in the world, though at the time part of it consisted of farms. Many immigrants to the US stayed in New York, giving the city the variety of cultures it has today. During the 1920s, when alcohol was banned, New York had many speakeasies, which were illegal but very popular. Today there are about 8 million people in New York City and 19 million in the state.

North Carolina - a southern US state on the Atlantic Ocean, also called the Tar Heel State and the Old North State. The largest city is Charlotte, and the capital city is Raleigh. The state was settled by the English and named after King Charles I. It was one of the original 13 states and later one of the Confederate States. Its products include tobacco, corn, furniture, paper and chemicals. Its tourist attractions include the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge National Parkway and the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk.

North Dakota - a northern central US state on the Canadian border, also called the Sioux State and the Peace garden State. The largest city is Fargo, and the capital city is Bismarck. Most of the North Dakota was part of the Louisiana Purchase, and Britain gave the rest in 1818. The state is known for its agriculture: over 90% of its area is used for farming. Its agricultural products include wheat, beans, sunflowers, pigs and cattle. It also produces coal, oil and gas. Tourist attractions include the International Peace Garden on the US-Canadian border, Theodore Roosevelt National Park and badlands.

Ohio - a north-eastern US state, also called the Buckeye State. The capital and largest city is Columbus. Its mainly an industrial state and produces steel, motor vehicles and parts, especially in Cleveland, as well as jet engines, tools and rubber products. Agricultural products include soya beans, corn, milk and grapes. Both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame are in Ohio.

Oklahoma - a southern central state of the US. It is also called the Sooner State and people from Oklahoma are called Sooners. The capital and the largest city is Oklahoma City. The area was part of the Louisiana Purchase, and the Five Civilized Tribes were forced to settle there in the 19th century. Oklahoma became a state in 1907. It produces oil, gas, minerals, wheat and cotton. Its places of interest include the Cherokee Cultural Center at Tahlequah and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame at Oklahoma City.

Oregon - a state in the north-western US, also called the Beaver State. The largest city is Portland, and the capital city is Salem. Captain James Cook sailed along its coast in 1778, and Lewis and Clark visited the area in 1805. Oregon became a state in 1859. Its products include salmon and other fish, wood, paper, berries and nuts. Tourists can visit Crater Lake National Park, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

Pennsylvania - a state in the north-eastern US, also called the Keystone State for its central position among the 13 original states. The largest city is Philadelphia, and the capital city is Harrisburg. The area was established for Quakers in 1681 by William Penn, who named it Pennsylvania for his father. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought there during the American Civil War. The state produces chemicals, medicines, electronic equipment and farm products. Tourist attractions include Valley Forge and the Pennsylvania Dutch region.

Rhode Island - the smallest US state. It is in the north-east of the country on the Atlantic coast. It was named after the Greek Island of Rhodes and was one of the original 13 states. Providence is the capital and largest city. Rhode Island has a fishing and boat-building industry and produces jewellery, electronic products and grapes. Popular tourist attractions include Newport and Samuel Slaters Mill in Pawtucket.

South Carolina - a south-eastern US state on the Atlantic Ocean, also called the Palmetto State. The capital and largest city is Columbia. The state was named after the English king Charles I and was one of the original thirteen colonies. It produces textiles, fruit, tobacco, chickens and cattle. Its tourist attractions include the Fort Sumter National Monument and the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia.

South Dakota - a northern central US state, also called the Coyote State and the Mount Rushmore State. The capital city is Pierre and the largest city is Sioux Falls. It was part of the Louisiana Purchase, and gold was discovered there in 1874. The Sioux fought white people who settled there, until they were defeated at Wounded Knee. The state grows wheat, maize/corn and sunflowers, and produces machinery and electronic equipment. Many tourists visit Mount Rushmore and the Badlands National Park.

Tennessee - a south-eastern US state, also called Volunteer State. It became a state in 1796 and later joined the Confederate States. Many Civil War battles were fought there. The largest city is Memphis and the capital city is Nashville, which has a population of 626,144. Memphis is the state's largest city, with a population of 670,902. Tourist attractions include the Great Smoky Mountains, Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry. Its products include tobacco, cotton, chemicals, textiles and electrical goods.

Texas - a large south-western US state, also called the Lone Star State because it was once an independent republic. It has the second largest population of all US states. Its biggest cities are Houston, San Antonio and Dallas, and the capital city is Austin. Texas became independent of Mexico in 1836 and a US state in 1845. It was also one of the Confederate States. It has been well known for its cowboys and now produces a lot of oil and gas as well as beef and many agricultural products. Tourists visit the Alamo, Big Bend National Park and the Lyndon B Johnson Space Center.

Utah - a western US state which is one of the Rocky Mount States. About two-thirds of the population are Mormons. It was named after the Utah Native American people, and its popular name is the Beehive State. Other Native Americans, such as the Navajo, lived in the area when the Mormons began to settle there in 1847. It became a state in 1896. Its products include cattle, pigs, copper, gold, silver, oil and medical instruments. Tourist attractions include the Great Salt Lake, the Rainbow Bridge and Zion National Park.

Vermont - a New England state in the US, on the border with Canada. It is also known as the Green Mountain State. The largest and most populous city is Burlington, which has a population of 7,855 and is the least populated state capital in the country. It produces different types of stone, including granite and marble, and other products include electrical equipment, paper, furniture and maple syrup. Tourist attractions in Vermont include the Green Mountain Forest and the Bennington Battle Monument.

Virginia - a US state on the Atlantic coast, also called the Old Dominion and sometimes the "Mother of Presidents" after the eight U.S. presidents born there. Its largest city is Virginia Beach, and the capital city is Richmond. Richmond became the capital of the Confederate States and the Civil War ended at Appomattox Court House. Eight presidents were born in Virginia, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Woodrow Wilson. Local products include tobacco and electrical equipment. Among the tourist attractions are Williamsburg, Mount Vernon and Monticello.

Washington - a north-western state in the Pacific Northwest region of the US, also called the Evergreen State. The largest city is Seattle and the capital city is Olympia. Both Britain and the US occupied the land in the first half of the 19th century. Washington became part of the Oregon Territory in 1848 and a state in 1889. Its products include wood, paper, apples and fish, and it has a large aerospace industry. Tourist attractions include Mount Rainier, Mount St Helens and Seattles Pacific Science Center and Space Needle.

West Virginia - a central eastern state of the US, also called the Mountain State. The capital and largest city is Charleston. West Virginia separated from Virginia in 1861 because its people did not want to join the Confederate States, and became a US state two years later. It produces apples, milk products, coal, steel, glass and chemicals. Tourist attractions include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and Monongahela National Forest. Nearly 75% of the state is covered by forests.

Wisconsin - a northern US state which has borders with Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Its popular name is the Badger State. The largest city is Milwaukee and the capital city is Madison. The US won the land from Britain in the American Revolution, but the British did not leave until after the War of 1812. Wisconsin became a state in 1848. Its farm products include cheese, milk and corn, and it also produces paper, beer, cars and machinery. The state has more than 14000 lakes, many of which are popular with tourists.

Wyoming - one of the Rocky Mountain States in the western central US. It is also called the Equality State because it was the first state to give women the right to vote (in 1869).The capital and largest city is Cheyenne and the most populous city of Wyoming with a population of nearly 60,000 people. Its products include wheat, wool, oil, gas and minerals and wood. Tourist attractions include Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton national Park, Fort Laramie National Historic Site and the Cheyenne frontier Days celebration.
