Critical Analysis
• The country Malta and city Bristol have well utilized their culture and heritage in order to attract tourism
• Significance of economic benefits of tourism have also been realized by the city and country- Bristol Beer fest
• Tourism events have become an important part of the country and the city, thus authorities have consistently providing tourists with attractive travel packages and offers
• Attempts have been made to include more events to attract tourists through out the year- Malta’s Isle of MTV and Bristol’s Slapstick Festival
• Promotion of local cultural events has been done to attract tourists- Village Festas (Malta) and Folk Festival (Bristol)
• The country is also being promoted as a honeymoon destination
Critical analysis- Malta• Tourism contributes almost 15% of the GDP in 2010 which dropped
from 40% in 2003-04• In 2004 Malta became a part of the European Union in order to attract
more tourists, as it allowed travelers in Europe to visit without any visa or documentation
• Malta has 'visa facilitation agreements’ with various nations • Since 2010, the Malta Tourism Authority has been marketing Malta as
a medical tourism destination• The country has recently started promoting itself in the digital sphere• New events have been initiated by the country in order to attract
tourist throughout the year- The Malta International Jazz Festival • The country recorded a visit from 1.3 Million tourists in 2010 and
expects this trend to rise rapidly
Critical Analysis- Bristol• Bristol is the forth most popular state in England to visit • Recorded around 1.47 million visitors in 2008-09• Bristol has been recently hosting events close to its culture to attract
more tourism like the Banksy Exhibition in City Museum• Other attraction for tourists have also been developed keeping economic
benefits in mind- Cobot Circus (contains shops, auditorium, offices, cinemas, hotel and 250 apartments)
• The city is also using the opportunity of the Olympics 2012 and designed a campaign around it
• Estimated tourists in the year 2012 are 3 million• Bristol’s signature International Balloon Fiesta has also been lead to new
heights and has become Europe's largest annual hot air balloon event
Malta International Fireworks Festival
• This is one of the most popular events hosted annually by Malta• Firework producers from all over the world visit the country during this
festival to display their fireworks• The festival lasts for 8 days and ceremonies take place at various parts of
Gozo and Malta, Valletta being the prime region• The finale of the event takes place in Grand Harbour in Valletta• There are Pyro-musical displays by prominent firework factories of Europe• Malta International Fireworks Festival 2012 was the 8 edition of this event,
where six factories from six different countries competed• The festival is also symbol of integration of Malta to the European Union in
2004 • Malta Tourism Authority is also promoting Malta as a spring holiday
destination coinciding with the International Fireworks Festival• 2012 this event attracted more than 30,000 tourists
Elaborating the Hallmark Events of Malta and Bristol
Bristol International Balloon Fiesta• First held in 1979 and is now the largest in Europe • Popular attraction is the night glow where balloons glow at night to the
music around• Other attractions include fireworks, dance and food• The four day extravaganza attracts around 1,00,000 people each day• With participants from all over the world almost hundred balloons launch
at a time• Special balloons are prepared for the event representing participants from
various organizations & countries • This festival is among the top three tourist attractions of UK• 34th Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and is estimated to provide the
local economy with £13 million• This event also to coincides with London Olympics 2012 to attract more
tourism
