OVERVIEW

• BEING A LEADER IS SOMETHING EVERYONE WANTS TO BE, WHETHER IT BE AT WORK, SPORTS, ORGANIZATIONS, ETC. YOU WANT TO BE LOOKED UP TOO, AND TO HAVE THE “ATTENTION.”

• WHEN YOU OWN A BUSINESS, YOU WANT TO BE A LEADER AND NOT A MANAGER. YOU WANT TO BE SOMEONE LOOKS UP TO, NOT SOMEONE WHO TELLS OTHERS WHAT TO DO WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING THEMSELVES

• AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MANAGER VS. A LEADER, AND THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IS THAT ONE CONTROLS WHERE THE OTHER OVERSEES, AND LETS THEM GO AND DO WHAT THEY WANT SO TO SPEAK.

• AN EXAMPLE OF A GOOD LEADER IS TONY FROM ZAPPOS. HE ALLOWS HIS WORKERS TO DO WHAT MAKES THEM COMFORTABLE UNDER THE CULTURE.

• AN EXAMPLE OF A MANAGER IS A BOSS AT MCDONALDS. THEY FOLLOW RULES TO A T, AND THEY GO AROUND TELLING THEM WHAT TO DO, INSTEAD OF BEING INVOLVED WITH THEM

• THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT MAKE SOMEONE A LEADER, BUT WHAT MAKES THEM AN EFFECTIVE LEADER?

• THE WAY THEY GO ABOUT WORKING WITH THE EMPLOYEES, WHICH ARE 4 DIFFERENT WAYS

• 1) COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER• FOCUS MORE ON THE PEOPLE, AND LESS ON THE TASK.• THIS TELLS ME THAT PEOPLE IS A BIG CONCERN FOR THIS BOSS

• 2) TEAM MANAGER• HIGH PEOPLE / HIGH TASK• THIS TELLS ME THAT ALTHOUGH PEOPLE ARE A HIGH PRIORITY, THE WORK THAT

NEEDS TO BE DONE IS A BIG PRIORITY AS WELL

3) IMPROVISED MANAGERLOW PEOPLE / LOW TASKTHIS TELLS ME THAT THE MANAGER IS FOCUSED ON HIMSELF, AND NOT ON THE JOB AT HAND

• 4) AUTHORITY OBEDIENCE MANAGER• LOW PEOPLE / HIGH TASK• THIS TELLS ME THAT THE MANAGER IS ABOUT FOLLOWING THE RULES DOWN TO

THE PERIOD, AND THAT THE PERSONA OF HIS EMPLOYEES DOESN’T MATTER. AS LONG AS THE JOB GETS DONE, SO IS THE MANAGER.

5) THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MANAGERMEDIUM PEOPLE / MEDIUM TASKTHIS FOCUSES ON THE PEOPLE AS EQUALLY AS THE OUTPUT OF WORK

• IT HAS BEEN TESTED THAT “TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN TOP LEADERSHIP IS THE SINGLE MOST RELIABLE PREDICTOR OF EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION.”

• THIS CAN RELATE TO A FEW OF THE MANAGER THEORIES

• COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER AND MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MANAGER

• WHY THESE? BECAUSE THE FOCUS OF THESE LEADERS ARE HIGH ON PEOPLE, THAT MEANS THE EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION MEANS THE MOST

• EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION • HELPING EMPLOYEES UNDERSTAND:

• BUSINESS STRATEGY• HOW THEY CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMPANIES GOALS• SHARING INFORMATION WITH THE EMPLOYEES AND KEEPING THEM IN THE LOOP

• THIS AGAIN GOES WITH COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER AND MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MANAGER, BECAUSE THEY THINK THAT THE PEOPLE ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMPANY. IT CAN ALSO RELATE TO TEAM MANAGER, BECAUSE EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION LEADS TO HIGH AND COMPLETED WORK HABITS

• EARLIER ON I HAD LISTED A FEW TRAITS OF LEADERSHIP, BUT THERE ARE ALSO PRINCIPLES THAT YOU USE AS GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU GROW AS A LEADER AND BECOME THE MOST EFFECTIVE LEADER POSSIBLE

• KNOW YOURSELF AND SEEK IMPROVEMENT• KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO AND YOUR LIMITS, AND ALWAYS STRIVE TO BE BETTER. THE

WORST KIND OF LEADER IS THOSE WHO DON’T TRY TO IMPROVE

• BE PROFICIENT• YOU MUST KNOW YOUR GOALS, THAT WAY YOU CAN COME UP WITH A CLEAR PATH

TO THAT GOAL

SEEK RESPONSIBILITY AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITYALWAYS WANT TO DO MORE, AND EVEN IF A PROBLEM FALLS ON YOUR

EMPLOYEE, TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. THIS SHOW THE EMPLOYEE THAT YOU CARE

MY OWN OPINION

• AS YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE A LOT OF FACTORS THAT GO INTO BEING A GOOD LEADER AS A BUSINESS OWNER, AND AS A FUTURE BUSINESS OWNER, A LEADER IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE.

• BOSSING AROUND NEVER WORKED, AND NO ONE LIKES WORKING FOR SOMEONE WHO GOES OUT OF THEIR WAY FOR SOMEONE WHO IS SELFISH

MY OWN OPINION

• BEING ABLE TO SHOW RESPONSIBILITY, BEING ABLE TO WALK THE WALK, BEING ABLE TO PASS ON GOOD CHARACTERISTIC TRAITS NOT ONLY IMPROVES YOUR EMPLOYEES, THAT ALSO IMPROVES YOUR BUSINESS

• HAPPY EMPLOYEES = BETTER WORK ENVIROMENT

• A TON OF WAYS TO GO AHEAD AND BE A LEADER, BUT THESE ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO BE A GREAT LEADER

• BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL

IN CONCLUSION

• ALL BUSINESS’S WORK IN DIFFERENT WAYS, SOME ARE SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE THERE IS A MANAGER TYPE BOSS, AND OTHERS WORK WHEN THERE IS A LEADER TYPE BOSS. BUT I THINK IN THE LONG RUN, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR BUSINESS IS THE EMPLOYEES, AND I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL BE HAPPIER IF YOU LEAD AND HELP THEM, RATHER THAN BE SELFISH AND TELL THEM WHAT TO DO.

• BEING A LEADER, WHETHER IN A BUSINESS OR ANY OTHER SCENARIO, I BELIEVE IS THE BEST WAY TO GO
