On the first day of the Lunar New Year, the tan family will visit grandma to wish her good health and longevity.

福One of the family’s favourite things about Lunar New Year: the treats and the stories that Grandma would tell!

The young ones gather around Grandma excitedly.

“Tell us about our favourite CNY goodies, Grandma,” the young ones chorused in unison.

“One at a time,” Grandma says.

“Let’s see who’s first…”

Bak kwa came from a meat preservation and preparation technique used in ancient China.

肉干Because people were poor, meat was a luxury for many. It was thus reserved for the Lunar New Year.
