- 1. FANZINES? WHATS A FANZINE? A FANZINE IS A MAGAZINE THAT WILL
OFTEN BE PRODUCED MY AMATEURS OR FANS OF A PARTICULAR BAND, GROUP
OR FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. THE EXAMPLE THAT I WILL BE LOOKING AT IS
PUNK FANZINES, AS THIS LINKS WELL WITH THE STYLE OF MAGAZINE THAT I
WILL BE PRODUCING, PUNK ROCK.
2. EXAMPLES OF FANZINES SNIFFIN GLUE VAGUE THE END BOYS OWN 'THE
CLIQUE VERSUS THE BLEAK KILL YOUR PET PUPPY ABLAZE PUNK PLANET
MONITOR CHEMICAL IMBALANCE 3. SNIFFIN GLUE THIS WAS A FANZINE
PUBLISHED AND EDITED BY MARK PARISH IN LONDON. THE CO-FOUNDER,
DANNY BAKER, LATER BECAME A TELEVISION PERSONALITY AFTER BEING A
ROCK JOURNALIST. THE FANZINE COVERED THE EARLY RISE OF PUNK IN THE
UK, IT BEGAN ON JULY THE 13TH OF 1976 AND ONLY PRINTED 50 COPIES.
4. SNIFFIN GLUE FIRST ISSUE The covers were handwritten and hand
drawn, giving it a rough and scrap book style. This links to how
SNIFFIN Glue became the first ever fanzine to launch thousands of
others using the punk DIY ethic. The DIY lifestyle was adopted by
punks, they would live by their own means and not buy expensive
commercial products.Also, the cover only uses black and white,
there is no colour despite the ability to print in colour. This
links to the basic DIY style of the fanzine, also meaning that the
price could be kept low. 5. SNIFFIN GLUE STYLE One reviewer, Tony
Fletcher , says Sniffin' Glue was not so much badly written as
barely written; grammar was non-existent, layout was haphazard,
headlines were usually just written in felt tip, swearwords were
often used in lieu of a reasoned argument. . .all of which gave
Sniffin' Glue its urgency and relevance.Writing slopes upwards,
shows rough handwriting. Grammatical error, perhaps done on
purpose? 6. VAGUE VAGUE WAS PUBLISHED IN THE UK BY TOM VAGUE IN THE
1980S. IT WAS THE FIRST UK FANZINE THAT WAS PUBLISHED WITH A SPINE.
IT WAS DESCRIBED AS ANTI VOGUE, DISCUSSING CONSPIRACY THEORIES,
CULT FILMS, POLITICS ETC AS WELL AS COVERING PUNK BAND REVIEWS AND
INTERVIEWS. 7. VAGUE FIFTH ISSUE The title appears to say VAGUE,
however looking underneath you can see that written underneath the
A is in fact an O. This links to the anti VOGUE description of
VAGUE, as it has been untidily painted over leaving smudges which
are also on the G and U. The colour scheme consists of a duck egg
blue, black and white. The image has been printed in a vintage way
comparedto the more modern looking price at the bottom left had
corner of the page. 8. VAGUE STYLE There is a colour scheme of
pink, green, black and white in this image. The cover womans eye
lash appears to be falling off very obviously. This could again be
linking to the anti VOGUE style of the fanzine, as VOGUE displays
images of models who have been made up b make up artists for the
photo. Also, focusing onthe eyes, she appears to be staring into
space and is bearing a dull expression. This mocks the idea that
models are bimbos. 9. FANZINES AND MY MAGAZINE THESE FANZINES
DISPLAY STYLES, CONTENTS AND IDEOLOGIES THAT I WOULD LIKE TO
INCLUDE IN MY MAGAZINE. FOR EXAMPLE THE ROUGH DIY STYLE OF SNIFFIN
GLUE IS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD LIKE TO COPY TO GIVE MY MAGAZINE THE
KIND OF PUNK AUTHENTICITY THAT WOULD SUITE A PUNK ROCK FANZINE.
