CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEWelcome to the 2016 ARTBA National Convention!

This year’s meeting is very special because we are announcing a transformational new direction in safety with the launch of the “Safety Certification for Transportation Project Professionals ™” (SCTPP) program! Developed by the industry’s brightest minds, we believe this program is a game changer.

We will share the program details with you on Thursday, Oct. 6, during a general session that begins at 10:30 a.m. You will not want to miss this presentation!

Also on tap, Caterpillar Chairman & CEO Doug Oberhelman will discuss “The State of American Business.” ARTBA senior staff will be on hand to provide a federal transportation policy and regulatory update, preview the November elections and transportation ballot initiatives, and share a sneak peek at the 2017 market forecast.

The Chairman’s Banquet on Oct. 6 features entertainment by veteran performer Ron Pearson, whom Hollywood Reporter calls “a comic ball of fire.” Following the dinner, we will hold a reception under the stars, and have telescopes and professional astronomers on hand to give you a “tour of the universe.”

Special thanks to all of our sponsors, and to our host chapter, the Arizona Transportation Builders Association, for helping make the program a reality.

I look forward to visiting with you. What we do over the next few days—and going forward—will help save lives!

National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse: The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse is the world’s leading information sources related to roadway work zone management, safety and health. From its vast online resources (www.workzonesafety.org), to its conferences and webinars, to its posters, brochures and technical advice documents, the Clearinghouse is your first stop for all things related to work zone safety.

ARTBA Safety Training: Through ARTBA’s Foundation, the association provides training and education to approximately 7,000 workers each year. That remarkable outreach is accomplished by providing courses which cover the primary hazards that face the industry every day, including Avoiding Runovers and Backovers, Spotting and Backing Certification, OSHA Outreach Training, and our award-winning Roadway Safety Plus. ARTBA now offers online training available 24/7. These courses provide interactive training, testing and provide professional development hours (PDHs) to those who successfully complete the courses.

ARTBA Fall Prevention Training: With support from the U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Federal Highway Administration, ARTBA has developed a comprehensive series of fall prevention training and education documents. Falls are the second leading cause of fatalities in the roadway construction industry, and the leading cause of death and injury in general construction. These training resources are provided to help employers prevent falls from heights, from equipment and from slips and trips.

Acrow Bridge: Acrow Bridge has a long history of serving the transportation and construction industries. For more than 60 years, they have built a great track record of successful collaborations with contractors and state departments of transportation on the design and installation of a full line of modular steel bridging solutions for vehicle, rail and pedestrian use. For more information, please visit www.acrow.com.

San Javier MissionMission San Xavier del Bac is a historic Spanish Catholic mission located about 10 miles south of downtown Tucson, on the Tohono O’Odham San Xavier Indian Reservation. It was built between 1783–1797 and is the oldest European structure in Arizona. Widely considered to be the finest example of Spanish Colonial architecture in the United States, it hosts some 200,000 visitors each year. The site is also known as the “place where the water appears,” as there were once natural springs in the area. The Santa Cruz River, which now runs only part of the year, is also nearby. The mission is situated in the center of a centuries-old Indian settlement of the Tohono O’odham, located along the banks of the Santa Cruz River. The mission is a pilgrimage site, with thousands visiting each year on foot and horseback. For more information: http://www.sanxaviermission.org/
