EFDR PRIME MINISTER PAYS VISIT TO TENDAHO ...

expected to resume production as of the second quarter of this Ethiopian budget year is way back from the schedule set due to various reasons. Curving, step by step, the problems the construction had encountered, the factory have now reached at a stage where it can enter into production with its full capacity, he further noted.

The construction of the factory at Afar Regional State mainly helps the pastoralists around to be gathered at villages whereby they get services of various social institutions as well as benefit themselves working as out growers of sugarcane, the premier added. Creating wide job opportunities to citizens, the factory enables pastoralists become beneficiaries of the opportunity. Moreover, this opportunity also paves ways to them to supply different

commodities to employees of the factory and thereby build up trade at the area, the Prime Minister further stated.

Satisfying its own power demand by producing 120 Mega Watt of electric power from its by-product, the factory will also play as a source of power to development activities carried out at the areas around, he noted. The factory will benefit pastoralists in many ways enabling them carry out modern cattle fattening works as well as prepare cattle feeds taking advantage of using by-products of sugar as inputs, the Prime Minister said.

When both new sugar development projects, including Tendaho Sugar Factory, enter into regular production, they will make the nation benefit a great deal from

the sector, he furthermore added.

Likewise, a team of government higher officials led by EFDR Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegne has also paid a visit to Wolkayit Sugar Development Project and the May-Day Dam construction in Tigray Regional State on February 22, 2015.The premier and his accompanying senior government officials have also been briefed on the project’s activities and the progress of the construction of the dam.

When completed, the May-Day Dam, which has a capacity of holding 3,497,000,000 meter cube water, is the source of water supply to 50 thousand hectares of cane cultivation field to be developed at Wolkayit Sugar Development Project.

activities which will make the communities living on the borders of Benchi-Maji and Keffa Zonal Administrations the foremost beneficiaries.

Representing the President of South Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State Negatu Dansa, Head of Pastoralists Bureau of the region was present on the discussion forum held at Mizan- Aman Town of Benchi-Maji Zone. On the occasion, Negatu recalled the consecutive discussions held with the pastoralists around and the concerning bodies of various levels prior to the commencement of the construction job of Omo-Kuraz No.1 Sugar Factory in which consensus was , by then, reached at by all.

The Bureau has made pastoralists of Boddi nationalities of Selamago Woreda of South Omo Zone live in villages and thereby become beneficiaries of social institutions, he further disclosed. Recalling attitudes of uncertainties which had been reflected at the start of the villagization process, he went on saying “many others have now become beneficiaries of the villagization program taking a lesson from those pastoralists who earlier have joined the villages constructed and got benefits in various ways”.

SECTOR STARTS CULTIVATING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

In a bid to exploit the huge potentials of sugar factories and sugar development projects of the nation for cultivation of fruits and vegetables and therefore benefit from the sector, various activities are being carried out. Accordingly, Sugar Corporation has set a work unit called “Co-Products and Agro-processing Division” in its all structures and thereby run the sector with full responsibility.

Cultivating fruit at the range of 200 to 300 hectares of land of each new sugar development projects’ command area based on a thorough feasibility study and then carrying out the job taking into consideration the public around and hence prepare the product at a factory level is the logic behind in setting the division.

Cultivating crops, vegetables, fruits as well as nurturing cattle vis-à-vis the sugar development job are the major duty of the division. The division is currently giving professional assistance to Metehara Sugar Factory and Kessem Sugar Development Project which are cultivating fruits at 200 hectares of land.

The main products incorporated in the

fruit development work are Mango and Orange. And, activities are being carried out to make these products first available to the benefit of the communities living around sugar factories and sugar development projects and thereby supply the surrounding market.

Site selection and canal design works are being carried out by Water Works Design and Supervision Bureau of Amhara Regional State to cultivate Mango at 50 hectares of land at Beles Sugar Development Project. The Mango seedlings are being prepared by the Bureau.

Likewise, to cultivate Mango at 35 hectares of land, Kuraz Sugar Development Project is currently searching for seedling preparation station around the project site. Moreover, seedling preparation work, to cultivate Mango at 25 hectares, is being carried out at Fincha Sugar factory.

With regard to cultivation of Orange, supplied from its 0.5 hectares of seedling station, 16,000 seedlings, out of 45,000 Acetic of Orange trunks planted, have grown-up successfully at Metehara Sugar Factory.

OMO KURAZ SUGAR DEVELOPMENT PROJECT SATISFACTORILY RESPONDING TO NATIVE PASTORALISTS

DEMAND FOR DEVELOPMENT

Pastoralists living in and around Omo River have been leading their lives wondering from place to place in search of grazing land and water for their cattle. As they are found in remote areas of the nation, they knew neither social services nor infrastructures prior to the inception of Kuraz Sugar Development Project. But now their demand for development is getting satisfactory response from both the federal and regional governments of the nation.

It was through the villagization program that pastoralists gathered for the first tome at three villages of Arebijo area had started getting social services few years back when the Omo Kuraz Sugar Develoment Project was kicked off at Selamago District of South Omo Zone. And, witnessing the fruits of the sugar development project, pastoralists of same zone together with

those at Keffa and Bench-Maji zones have started requesting both the regional and federal governments of the nation to foster the activities of the Omo Kuraz Sugar Development Project and reach where are around and thereby they too become beneficiaries of social services and infrastructures as their fellow pastoralists at Selamago. Hence, responding to the demand of pastoralists, the project together with the regional and federal government have made social services and infrastructures available to pastoralists living at Gurra and Maki villages at which they started living together through the villagization program they had joined voluntarily. Furthermore, construction of social services at a village called Haillowa One is at its final stage while contractual agreements are signed with the constructing institutions so that they could start

building similar service giving institutions at Haillowa Two village too.

As these all pastoralists were not acquainted with farming earlier , the project , giving training on how to till a land and harvest crops , has made available irrigable plot of land upon their request so that they can run farming business along with their cattle rearing job. And, it was pastoralists who have first started living at three villages of Arebijo that started farming and are now harvesting for a third round. At this village 2,400 hectares of irrigable land is made available to native pastoralists while efforts are underway to others gathered at Gurra, Maki and Haillowa villages.

Besides these the project, working hand in glove with the regional and federal government, is making irrigable land, social services and infrastructures available to those gathered at villages very far from the

partial view of social services constructed to natives

command area of the project.

On the other hand, pastoralists are benefitting a great from the market link created due to the constructed roads and other infrastructures which have helped them sell their herds with much better price as never before.

The Omo Kuraz native pastoralists have not only became beneficiaries of the above opportunities but also got job opportunities at

the project itself and those participating institutions of the project’s various activities.

Ollilu Charnielay is a native from Murssi nationality. He had went through a tractor machines operating training program at Chancho Tractor Training Center in 2013 and is now working as a regular employee of sugarcane plantation division of the project. His role in the division is land leveling and furrowing of cane cultivation field of the project using

tractor machines. Asked to share about his opinion of the project, he said “I am very happy of working at this sector which is believed to contribute a great deal in doing away with the poverty our nation is leveled for”. Ollilu had no any idea about tractor machines before his training.

The other tractor operator employee of the project who shared his view about the project is Kassahun Metachew. He is from Dimmie

nationality. Going through the same training program as Ollilu, Kassahun is working at the cane cultivation division of the project and is eager to see the sugar factory under construction producing sugar.

Metachew Deneke is from the Dimmie nationality and is now working as a director of an elementary school built at Gurra village. He speaks the language of Boddis’ fluently. According to him currently there are 43 students enrolled among them 18 are children while 15 are aged. And, what surprises him more is the enthusiasm the latter are showing for learning. The school is providing exercise books and pencils to students besides feeding their lunch. “We also have special incentive to female students; we provide them with a liter of edible oil every month as long as they attend the school with no interruption”, Metachew went on saying.

Gatapai Zoggi is from Boddi nationality and we found her while she was getting the service of the flour mill constructed at Tikawoch Village of Gurra and asked her to share her reflections on her new way life. She and the villagers at Tikawoch have started getting services from potable water, flour mill, school and clinics of both human and cattle stations constructed at their village. “As I am attending the school regularly, I am now-a-days getting a liter of edible oil every month besides the lunch service during school days”.

These pastoralists living around the Omo Kuraz Sugar Development Project had paid a visit to Wonji Shewa Sugar Factory last year where farmers around it used have a long history of working with the sugar mill as sugarcane out growers. And, following their visit natives of the Omo Kuraz Sugar Development

Project have time and again been requesting the project to let them work as out growers of sugarcane like those farmers around Wonji Shewa Sugar Factory. The project accordingly has allotted 1,072 hectares of irrigable land to 1,430 pastoralists each acquiring one hectares of land upon which they are to grow sugarcane on 0.75 hectares and other crops on the rest 0.25 hectares. These pastoralists will get professional assistance from the project including fertilizers and pesticides supply.

Till now more than 36,000 citizens have got job opportunities in the project itself and the participant companies of the project. And, 158 associations have become beneficiaries by taking part in the construction and service giving jobs. Moreover, both the regional and federal governments of

Gatapai & her fellow natives getting flour mill service

the nation are working their level best in paving ways so that native pastoralists will step by step go up the ladders of various positions in the project. And, currently 30 native pastoralists are working in the project as irrigation experts after going through the training program at Arbaminch University while many in number are now working at different positions of the project.

Hence, as never before pastoralists around Omo Kuraz Sugar Development Project need

no one tell them what is best to their future unless he/she would dare want to run his/her obscured agenda.

Omo Kuraz Sugar Development Project command area encircles some woredas of South Omo, Keffa and Bench-Maji Zones and is one among other projects Ethiopia has identified as a very promising one for the sector and it will in the end have 175,000 hectares of land for its cane cultivation. Five sugar factories will be built here three with 12,000 TCD and the rest two with 24,000 TCD.

When Sense of Ownership isReflected in Sacrifices of Lives!

Mankind is the only unique creature on our planet in mak-ing his environment suitable to his day to day lives. Since his very existence he has never stopped this effort for a frac-tion of a second. The rough en-vironment he had lived in for centuries has now remarkably transformed due to his day-in and day-out relentless effort.

The technological advancement mankind has achieved so far is one among others that enabled him lead a more and more com-fortable and easy life. The very modern infrastructures and various social institutions to-gether with the transformation of his cultural practices have also made his life by far easier.

On the other hand, there are many other descendants of mankind at many corners of the planet especially in most of

the developing countries who are still denied of these privi-leges. The various nationalities living around the Omo-kuraz Sugar Development Project of Ethiopia are here worth men-tioning. It is with the inception of the project that its inhabit-ants started to get access to potable water, health stations, schools and some infrastruc-tures though Ethiopian govern-ment recognizes that a lot has to be done to halt their margin-alization hereafter.

A recent incident of fire acci-dent at Fincha Sugar Factory is a great lesson to those parties who are objecting the activities of the Omo-Kuraz Sugar De-velopment Project. A number of employees and the commu-nities around have given their lives while recently protecting the Factory, which has started operation in 1998, from the fire

accident it had encountered on March 14, 2015. It is the com-munities around the factory and its employees who, as the foremost beneficiaries from the mill, have given their valu-able lives with no hesitation in controlling the accident which would otherwise have been devastating and led the factory to its total closure.

Thanks to those who paid their lives or sustain light and severe physical injuries as well as the Government of Oromiya Re-gional State, Fire & Emergency Prevention & Rescue Author-ity of Addis Ababa, Sur Con-struction and the members of Federal Police of the area that the mill has already begun its usual operation after three or four days interruption for very minor maintenance. One died on the spot & two while they were getting treatment

at Bethel Hospital here in the capital, Addis Ababa. There are nine others in this hospital while few were at the factory’s hospital for minor medical treatment.

A coupel of decades before the inhabitants around Fincha Sugar Factory, like that of the communities around the Omo Kuraz Sugar Development Project, were also leading their lives devoid of infrastructures and social service institutions though it was much better than the situations natives around Omo River are in. They had no health stations, potable water, schools, electricity etc. around as the area was so detached from the main road-route that stretches from the capital to Nekemt-Gimbi Town.

It is therefore, after the establish-ment of Finacha Sugar Factory that the communities around started getting the above men-tioned privileges at their door-steps. Now-a-days there are many scholars all over the na-tion and abroad who were born there for the establishment of the factory has brought schools and other social services with it. Excluding almost eleven and half thousand employees of the factory, there are about 40 thou-sand beneficiary people in vari-ous ways including job oppor-tunities which were only made possible due to the factory.

Likewise, over 1,750 pasto-ralists of Afar Regional State, where the two newly built factories closer to their com-pletion– Tendaho and Kessem Sugar Factories, are working as out grower of sugar cane

owning irrigable cane cultivat-ed land. More than 345 youth members of these pastoralists are also found recruited by the factories passing through vari-ous short as well as long term skill development training pro-grams at this very early stage of these projects. Over 5,000 pas-toralists around Tendaho Sugar Factory have also got direct as well as indirect job opportuni-ties.

Same is true with the various natives living around the Omo Kuraz Sugar Development Project at this very early stage of the project. Following their, especially Boddi Natives’ visit to Wonji Shewa Sugar Factory where now seven thousand hectares of land is being cul-tivated with cane by the com-munities living around, the Boddis have requested to have the same privilege. And, as per their request, each getting ir-rigable cane cultivated land from the project, they are now taking care of it as out grow-ers. Many members of Boddi, Murssi and other nationalities are now working as employ-ees of the project while many youths of these natives, getting short term technical skills de-

velopment training programs at various institutions of the country, are now found work-ing as regular employees of the project & also of participating sub-contractors.

Moreover, these natives, as never before, are now getting access to various social service institutions built by the project/government joining the villagi-zation programs voluntarily.

Time is not too far for the na-tives around Omo River to start leading a better life. The area will in the very near future be changed into an industrial cor-ridor due to the sugar factories which are now at their primary construction stages.
