The camel is a large, strong desert animal. Camels can travel great distances across hot, dry deserts with little food or water. They walk easily on soft sand where trucks would get stuck, and carry people and heavy loads to places that have no roads. Camels also serve the people of the desert in many other ways.

A female camel carries a single young, called a calf, inside her body for about 13 months before giving birth. The calf's eyes are open at birth, and a thick, woolly coat covers its body. The calf can run when it is only a few hours old, and it calls to its mother with a soft "baa" somewhat like that of a lamb. The young camel and its mother live together for several years unless they are forcibly kept apart.

The birth weight of calf is between 30-40 kg. Weaning weight at 1 year is about 150-180 kg, and mature weight is 500-600 kg. on average, reached at 6-7 years.

A fully-grown camel can weigh up to 700kg/1542lbs.

A camel can go 5-7 days with little or no food and water. These days, camels rely on man for their preferred food of dates, grass and grains such as wheat and oats, but a working camel travelling across an area where easily survive on thorny scrub.

Camels need very little water if their regular diet contains good. Although camels can withstand severe dehydration, a large animal can drink as much as 100 litres/21 gallons in ten minutes.

The camel has a large mouth, with 34 sharp teeth.

A camel's nasal passages are protected by large muscular nostrils that can be opened and closed at will.

A camel's rope-like tail is over 50cm/19" long.

Camels come in every shade of brown, from cream to almost black.

After a gestation periods of 13 months, a camel cow usually bears a single calf, and occasionally twins. The normal life span of a camel is 40 years, although a working camel retires from active duty at 25.
