I spent the year 1943 at Kenyon College, Ohio, in an Air Corp Pre-Meteorology program. I guess there may have been 80 men in the group. A lot of them ended up on San Jose Island. Several months later we went to Camp Siebert Alabama where we were put into the newly formed 238th Chemical Depot Co. Next we went to the Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. From there we went to San Jose Island, Panama ca, Feb.1945. I was discharger in Feb. 1946.Other Kenyon GIs Were in the 236th Chemical Depot Co. It served in the European Theater. Some of us kept in touch via email for decades.

I served as a sergeant managing instrumentation in the field. None of the tests that I worked on involved mustard gas. I knew of no such tests while I was there. I was only involved in one test where I was required to wear protective clothing. I needed it to go into the test area after an aerial spraying. I didn’t know what that agent was. Just for fun I ran the length of my route. It wasn’t very long. I may have been involved in four tests.

I don’t remember it looking like this. It was some kind of derelict.

Installation of a test instrument. I saw a 20 foot wide manta ray swim by. We watched the test from about a mile away on a launch. The plane looked like it was coming right straight at us. It was a successful test.
