Healthcare is burdened with many inefficient systems 4

Analysis of inefficiencies in the planets system-of-systemsFor example, Healthcare systems value is $4,270B. It carries an estimated inefficiency of 42%. From that level of 42% inefficiency, economists estimate that ~34% can be eliminated

Despite the significant clinical advances of the last 50 years, health services are faced with the same persistent problems: patient harm, waste, unwarranted variation, inequity, and failure to prevent the preventable. Health services are also faced with the new challenges of rising demand and resource constraints.
BUT
we are in the midst of a Third Healthcare Revolution driven by citizens, knowledge and the internet.
Third Healthcare Revolution Prof Muir Gray
The Mega Trends
MobileSocialCloudAnalytics6
Main Point: The need for Watson is driven by a confluence of mega-trends in big data. Cloud, giving access to applications and computing power from anywhere on any device; Analytics providing insight into hidden patterns and knowledge within data; Mobile providing ubiquitous access and transforming how users interact with technology; and social generating a vapor trail about users and connecting users to one another. Watson harnesses the power of this convergence of shifts.6
Healthcare Industry is dealing with data overload 60% of determinants of health Volume, Variety, Velocity, Veracity30% of determinants of healthVolume10% of determinants of healthVarietyClinical dataGenomics dataExogenous data(Behavior, Socio-economic, Environmental, ...)1100 Terabytes Generated per lifetime6 TBPer lifetime0.4 TBPer lifetimeSource: "The Relative Contribution of Multiple Determinants to Health Outcomes", Lauren McGover et al.,Health Affairs, 33, no.2 (2014)
From the viewpoint of health outcome determinants, almost 60% of data are exogenous, and never captured as part of EMR systems now.Inserting IBM in the dataflow, and enabling the generation/capture of this exogenous data is crucial for any emerging health ecosystems. Two important aspects of this data that plays directly to IBM strengths:traditional big data characteristics volume, velocity, varietyall data is generated in uncontrolled environments (that is, no hospital or supply side control) highly fragmented value chain that needs a neutral entity that can collect, store, manage, curate, analyze data for insights. 7
