PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IN INDIA

Public Distribution System (PDS)is an Indian food security system established by the govt.of india under the ministry of consumer affairs ,food and public distribution and managed jointly with state government in india .it distributes subsidized food and non food items to India’s poor.

The scheme was launched in India on June 1997

Food Corporation of India procures and maintains the Public Distribution System.

The main objective of the food security department is to ensure food security for the country through timely and efficient procurement and distribution of food grains.

Both central and state governments shared the responsibility of regulating the PDS.

Objectives The objectives of PDS is to ensure food

security and poverty alleviation by making available the essential commodities , specially food grains at an affordable and uniform price at the door steps of the consumers.

Functioning of PDSProcurement of food grains.Identification of poor and needy.Issue of ration cards to poor people.Transportation of food grains to all fair price

shops.Selling food grains to all the needy people.

Public Distribution ShopThere are about 4.99 lakh fair price shops across

IndiaLocally these are known as ration shops.

Ration CardThe Indian Ration card is mainly used for purchasing subsidized food and fuel Types of cards

poverty line is eligible for 35 kg of rice or wheat every month, while a household above the poverty line is entitled to 15 kg of food grain on a monthly basis.

Limitations of PDSPoor identification is not fool proof.Fair price shop owners gets bogus ration

cards.People do not get the entitled amount of food

grains.Good quality food grains are replaced with

poor quality items.Uneven distribution of food grains.
