As this climactic exhortation opens in 10:19-25, the authorsupplies an unmistakable echo of the exhortation in 4:14-16that precede his long and difficult word. He gives 3 exhortations: All in subjunctive mood This is used to urge some one to unite with the speakerin a course of action upon which he has already decided(Robertson, as qtd in Wallace) All in middle voice The subject performs or experiences the action expressedby the verb in such a way that emphasizes the subjectsparticipation. It may be said that the subject acts with avested interest. The active voice emphasizes the actionof the verb; the middle emphasizes the actor [subject] ofthe verb (Wallace) 15. He gives 3 exhortations: Let us draw near (cf. Exo 20:21) Together, we ought to be taking advantage of ourprivilege With a true heart (sincere, genuine, guileless) In full assurance of faith (the certainty derived from) With our hearts sprinkled clean With our bodies washed with pure waterPerhaps the twofold thought is just as the Old Testament priest entered thedivine presence by the sprinkling of blood and by virtue of bathing his fleshwith water, so the Christian believer may confidently exercise his approach toGod on the basis of a heart purified judicially by the blood of Christ and with alife that is cleansed from defilement by the Word of God (Eph 5:25-26). He gives 3 exhortations: Let us draw near Let us hold fast Let us consider (careful attention, reflective discern.) Together, we ought to be progressing toward the goal To stir up one another (to agitate, provoke, prod) To love ( ) & good ( ) works ([pro-]activities) Negatively: forsaking assembly (habitually/evidently-v. 39) Positively: encouraging one another (repeatedly) Emphatically: reach more for the goal the closer it gets 18. Let us draw near Fellowship Let us hold fast Integrity Let us consider UnityThe invitation to Christ is not just a call to forsake the world, but a call to impact this worldby committing to a communityof blood-bought, heaven-bound brothers 19.
