Greetings from the IWGADear Friends,

In less than 14 months, the ninth edition of The World Games will begin in Cali. We are looking forward with enthusiasm to the ! rst Games ever on the South American continent. Cali will present itself not only as the “summer city”, but also as a city of Salsa. On my visits to the city ahead of The World Games 2013, which are to be opened in the Pascual Guerrero Stadium on July 25, 2013, I have realized that it is not only we in the IWGA who are looking for-ward to the multi-sport event, but also the people of Cali!

Therefore this publication is not limited to giving information about the state of preparation or about the venues and schedules alone. It is also fo-cused on people: the women and men who are dedicating themselves, with great ambition and passion, to organizing wonderful Games. It is worth get-ting to know them.

Focusing on people is in line with our idea of The World Games: at the heart of sport are the athletes. They should feel comfortable, and the overall conditions should enable them to perform at their best. Thus, they will en-thuse the public and draw the attention of the media.

For many athletes, participation in The World Games is the pinnacle of their career. This is all the more so, because it is our principle that only the very best athletes in each sport discipline can compete for our medals. Moreover, the multi-sport event is a chance to meet athletes from other sports and almost 100 countries.

I am glad that this idea is supported by the IOC, the patron of The World Games since 1999. More and more national Olympic committees and national sports organizations are making sure that The World Games athletes in their countries get the best possible preparation and support for their competi-tions. This also makes me happy, and I see this as a con! rmation not only of our work, but also of the commitment of the host city of Cali.

I have said it before, and I would like to repeat it: We expect the best World Games ever. On the following pages of this publication, you can get an im-pression of why we are looking forward to a magni! cent 9th edition of The World Games.

Queridos amigos.

En menos de catorce meses comenzará la novena edición de Los Juegos Mundia-les en Cali. Con mucho entusiasmo esperamos la realización de los primeros juegos en Sudamérica. Cali se presentará no sólo como la ciudad del verano, sino también como la ciudad de la salsa. En mis visitas a la ciudad de Los Juegos Mundiales 2013, que serán inaugurados en el Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero el 25 de julio del mismo año, he tenido la oportunidad de darme cuenta de que como miembro de la IWGA, espero con emoción este evento multideportivo y estoy seguro que lo mismo sucederá con la gente de Cali.

Por lo tanto, esta publicación no se limita a informar sobre el estado de prepara-ción o sobre los escenarios deportivos y los calendarios sino que también se enfoca en la gente: las mujeres y los hombres que se dedican con ambición y pasión a la organización de unos juegos maravillosos. Vale la pena conocerlos.

Al analizar, vemos cómo la gente se conecta con nuestra idea de Los Juegos Mundiales; observamos cómo en el alma del deporte están los atletas. Ellos deben sentirse cómodos y las condiciones están dadas para permitirles desempeñarse al máximo. De esta manera, emocionarán al público y llamarán la atención de los medios de comunicación.

Para muchos atletas el poder participar en Los Juegos Mundiales es llegar a la cima de su carrera. Esto es muy importante porque nuestro principio consiste en que los mejores deportistas de cada disciplina compitan por las medallas. Además, el evento multideportivo es una posibilidad para conocer atletas de otros deportes y de casi cien países.

Me complace que esta idea sea apoyada por el COI y la directiva de Los Juegos Mundiales desde 1999. Cada vez más, los comités olímpicos nacionales y las organiza-ciones nacionales deportivas se aseguran de que los atletas que asisten a Los Juegos Mundiales en representación de sus países, alcancen la mejor preparación posible y el apoyo para sus competencias. Esto me satisface y de esta manera con! rmamos no solo nuestro trabajo sino también el compromiso de Cali como ciudad an! triona.

Lo he dicho antes y me gusta repetirlo: esperamos los mejores Juegos Mundiales de la historia. En las páginas siguientes usted se dará cuenta de que lo que esperamos es una magní! ca novena edición de Los Juegos Mundiales.

Colombia carried out the U20 Soccer (World) Championship. We pledged in a ceremony at that time to do everything possible to make this championship the best one ever organized, and we did it, thanks to the support of all the organizers, the participating cities, including Cali, and the fans from all over Colombia. We succeeded in presenting the best U20 in history.

"We weren’t the ones who stated this. It came from the fans and inter-national soccer community who took part in the event.

We are also going to do every-thing possible, Mr. Ron Froehlich (President of the International World Games Association), for these Games in Cali, the ninth edition, to be the best ever in the Games’ history.

Already from today, we extend our welcome to more than one hundred participating countries. In July and August of next year, we will see all athletes that are not participating at the London Olympics, participating here.

Mr. Froehlich told me that The World Games started in Santa Clara (United States) and from then on, rock and roll was the dance used to pro-mote the event. However, since Cali is holding The World Games 2013, they have decided to change from rock and roll to salsa.

I am glad to congratulate and rec-ognize the e# ort of many citizens of Cali and to all those who made pos-sible the arrival of The World Games in Colombia, and in particular to Cali.

In order to o# er all necessary guarantees, we are going to make a big investment. In order to make sure that the Games are well developed and the athletes have everything they need, the Government, with the help of the local Governor’s and Mayor’s o$ ces, will be giving more than $30 million to the project.

It will be a big challenge not only for the state of Valle Del Cauca, but for Colombia as well.

Fortunately, at Coldeportes we have someone who is very well ac-quainted with The Games: the new Director of Coldeportes, Mr. Andres Botero, a very good friend of Mr. Froehlich, and de! nitely the right per-son for the job; also, Mr. Otoya, who will be the o$ cial organizer from the Valle del Cauca State and the city of Cali. They make the perfect combina-tion for these games to be successful.

This is the ! rst time these Games will be held in a Latin-American city, and Cali is privileged. We will be pre-

pared not only to welcome the ath-letes, but also to win as many medals as possible.

"It is clear we achieved great re-sults at the last World Games in Kaoh-siung-Taiwan 2009, among the 100 countries represented, but this time I hope we do even better. We will take great care in preparing our athletes and make sure the wonderful city of Cali is also prepared to welcome all the athletes and visitors coming to The World Games in 2013. That is why preparations are already under way.

This is a big opportunity not only for Colombian sports, but also for tourism. We will show the natural wonders of our country and reveal to the world the extraordinary things we have. In addition, we will be fair to the planet, presenting our great biodiversity.Next July 25th I look forward to wel-coming you, Mr. Froehlich, here in Cali. "We look forward to welcoming you, the athletes from all over the world, to make these Games a great success.I am sure, Mr. Mayor and Mr. Gov-ernor of the State of Valle, that Cali will be up to the challenge, and I also guarantee that the country as a whole will.

Colombia cumplió con el campeo-nato mundial de fútbol sub 20. Dijimos en ese entonces que nos comprome-tíamos a hacer todo lo posible para que ese campeonato fuera el mejor realizado en la historia y lo logramos gracias a la colaboración de todos los or-ganizadores, de todas las ciudades que participaron –entre ellas por supuesto Cali– de todos los a! cionados y de toda Colombia. Logramos hacer el mejor sub 20 de todos los tiempos.

Y no lo decimos nosotros; lo dicen quienes vinieron y los organizadores internacionales que asistieron.

Y en este caso vamos a hacer todo lo posible, señor Ron Froehlich , Presi-dente de la Asociación Internacional de Los Juegos Mundiales, para que estos juegos sean los mejores de los nueve realizados hasta ahora .

Desde ya, hoy les damos la bienve-nida a los más de cien países que van a participar.

En julio y agosto del año entrante veremos a todos los deportistas que no participarán en Londres y que sí lo harán aquí porque son los deportes que no estarán en las Olimpiadas.

Me decía el señor Froehlich que Los Juegos comenzaron en Santa Clara (Estados Unidos) y desde entonces el rock and roll es la música que se utiliza para promocionar este evento, pero gracias a que Cali es esta vez la sede se ha decidido cambiar el rock and roll por la salsa.

Es un gusto felicitar y reconocer el esfuerzo de muchos caleños y de todos los que hicieron posible que Los Juegos Mundiales llegaran a Colombia, en particular a Cali.

Para brindar todas las garantías vamos a hacer una inversión grande; el Gobierno aportará más de 60 mil millones de pesos; la Gobernación y la Alcaldía, también contribuirán para que esta ciudad y los deportistas que asistan tengan todas las facilidades y Los Juegos se desarrollen de la mejor manera. Serán además, un reto para el Valle y para Colombia.

Por fortuna tenemos en Colde-portes una persona que conoce muy bien cómo son Los juegos: su nuevo director, el doctor Andrés Botero, muy amigo del señor Froehlich y la persona más idónea para que estas justas se desarrollen correctamente. Junto con el doctor Otoya, organizador o! cial por parte del Valle del Cauca y de Cali, hacen la dupla perfecta para que estos juegos sean un éxito.

Es la primera vez que este evento se realiza en América Latina y Cali es la ciudad privilegiada. Vamos a preparar-nos bien no solamente para recibir a los

deportistas, sino para ganar el mayor número posible de medallas.

Es claro, que nos fue bien en Los Juegos Mundiales pasados, realizados en Kaohsiung-Taiwán en el 2009 en el que participaron más de 100 países; sin embargo, para esta oportunidad espero que el desempeño de nuestros atletas sea mejor.

Vamos a lograr que nuestros depor-tistas tengan una gran actuación y que la maravillosa ciudad de Cali esté lo mejor preparada posible para acoger a todos los deportistas y a todos los que van a venir a esta justa deportiva. Por eso, desde ya estamos alistándonos.

Esta es una gran oportunidad no solo para el deporte colombiano sino para el turismo, para mostrar las bonda-des de nuestro país y revelarle al mundo lo extraordinario que tenemos. También, vamos a hacer justicia por el planeta pre-sentando nuestra gran biodiversidad.

El próximo 25 de julio aquí en Cali estaremos dándoles la bienvenida, señor Froehlich, a usted, a todos los deportistas, al mundo entero y a estos grandes juegos que se realizarán con todo éxito.

Estoy seguro de que Cali, señor Alcalde, sabrá estar a la altura así como el Valle del Cauca, señor Gobernador; y yo les garantizo que el país también.

We are at the start of a new challenge for Cali, to be the o$ cial host city of The World Games 2013 Cali, the world’s second most important sporting event after the Olympic Games. Also, this is a great opportunity for Cali to develop in both sports and social organization. An event of this dimension will leave its print of progress and improvement on all Cali’s inhabitants, the caleños.

I want to thank everyone who has been responsible for the achievements up to this point, enabling Colombians to enjoy such great competition in our own country. Nothing could be better than for Cali once again to be a Host City; as the headline in El Pais on July 23, 1967 said, when we found out that Cali would hold the VI Pan American Games: “Cali is the Host City. The Consecrated Capital of Sport for the Hemisphere”.

Any time you talk about sports in Colombia or the Americas,

you cannot avoid mentioning Cali. For caleños, sport has meant much more than just medals and prizes, although we have them too; it symbolizes one of the basic characteristics of our society, which for years has been the cradle of many great athletes from a number of sports.

For a long time, sports have brought the people of Cali together, thanks to our climate and geographic location, a great collaborative tradition, and our great cultural diversity; a richness that strengthens us as a city at a social level.

So Cali is well prepared to welcome athletes from the ! ve continents, all searching for gold and the highest spot on the podium.

The World Games 2013 Cali will display the motto “Fair Play to the Planet”; with this the capital of the Valle del Cauca intends to emphasize its concern for the environment, and

to promote green consciousness and sustainable development, in balance with its resources

To Cali, being host city of The World Games means the consolidation of many social processes that are derived from the practice of sports. The Games will generate progress in communities that ! nd in sport a social alternative that brings with it organization and accomplishment.

So I have no doubt that caleños will take this opportunity to show the sense of civism and from the warmth of all who live in the Colombian capital of sport. Starting today, I welcome you all to Cali, site of the ninth edition of The World Games.

país. Nada mejor para Cali que ser una vez más Capital deportiva del hemisferio, como lo tituló el diario El País el 23 de julio de 1967 al conocerse que la capital del Valle del Cauca sería designada como sede de los VI Juegos Panamericanos.

Por tal razón, al hablar del deporte en Colombia y en América necesariamente debemos referirnos a Cali. Para los caleños, el deporte ha ido mucho más allá de las estadísticas en medallería y primeros lugares, aunque también los tenemos; el deporte simboliza una de las características básicas de nuestra sociedad, la cual a través de los años, ha sido cuna de importantes deportistas en diferentes disciplinas.

Desde tiempo atrás el deporte ha hecho parte de la agenda de todos los ca-leños, en parte gracias a nuestro clima y ubicación geográ! ca, a la gran tradición empresarial y a la gran diversidad cultural, riqueza que nos fortalece a nivel social y como ciudad.

De esta manera, Cali está preparada para recibir a los deportistas provenientes de los cinco continentes que se disputarán el oro y lo más alto del pódium.

Los Juegos Mundiales 2013 Cali ostentan el eslogan “Juego limpio al planeta” con el que la Capital del Valle del Cauca pretende hacer énfasis en el cuidado del medio ambiente, en fomentar una conciencia verde y un desarrollo sostenible y equilibrado de sus recursos.

Ser sede de Los Juegos Mundiales signi! ca para Cali la consolidación de diversos procesos sociales que se derivan de la práctica del deporte además de generarles dinámica a las comunidades, que encuentran en las disciplinas deportivas una alternativa de formación y avance como sociedad.

Por eso, no cabe la menor duda de que esta es la oportunidad para que todos los caleños mostremos el civismo y la calidez propios de los que residen en la capital deportiva de Colombia. Desde hoy, sean bienvenidos a Cali, la sede de Los Novenos Juegos Mundiales.

Se inicia un nuevo reto para Cali al ser esta ciudad sede o! cial de Los Juegos Mundiales 2013, el segundo evento deportivo más importante del mundo después de los Juegos Olímpi-cos. También es una gran oportunidad para crecer como ciudad en el orden deportivo y social. Un evento de esta dimensión dejará una huella de pro-greso y avance para todos los caleños.

Cali: Through the Lens By Kurt Springer

It’s not always easy to sum up Cali in words. It’s something you need to breathe, feel, smell, and see. Most of the clichés that people throw out tend to be to one extreme or another. Depending on whom you talk to, it’s either the most entertaining place on earth, or somewhere you should avoid altogether. As an ex-pat, I can assure you the truth lies in the middle.

Like most big cities, Cali has an abundance of great restaurants, the-aters, bars, nightclubs, and hot spots. The other commodity that’s in no shortage is happy people. Colombia is considered the happiest place on Earth. And Cali has to be the happiest city in the happiest country. I guaran-tee you it’s not just cliché.

I caught up with a friend of mine the other day to get a look at Cali through the eyes of a young Colom-bian professional. He also happens to be a professional photographer. I was hoping he could take me around to some of the diverse sites Cali has to o# er, and maybe take some pictures. Not surprisingly, he was happy to oblige.

Roberto Bedoya is one of thou-sands of young working people that make Cali their home. He is a profes-sional photographer and certi! ed martial arts instructor. We agreed to meet and run around the city to some of the more popular spots, and take a few pictures. Our ! rst stop was Cristo Rey where we could get a great evening panorama of the city. Cristo

Cali: A través del lenteNo es fácil describir a Cali en pala-

bras. Es algo que se debe respirar, sen-tir, oler y ver. La mayoría de los clichés tienden a ser extremistas y así, según con quien se hable, Cali es el lugar más divertido de la Tierra o un lugar que se debe evitar. Como extranjero que vive en esta ciudad, les puedo asegurar que la verdad se mueve entre estas dos versiones.

Al igual que la mayoría de las grandes ciudades, Cali cuenta con un número importante de restaurantes, teatros, bares y discotecas. Un estado que predomina es la felicidad de su gente, y si se tiene en cuenta que Colombia está considerada como el país más feliz del mundo, Cali tiene que ser la ciudad más feliz en el país más feliz. Les garantizo que esto no es solo un cliché.

El otro día me encontré con un joven amigo, colombiano y fotógrafo que gracias a su profesión estaba seguro me mostraría la ciudad desde otra perspectiva. Asimismo, esperaba que pudiera enseñarme la nutrida agenda cultural de Cali para tomar algunas fotografías. No fue sorpresa para mí que el joven fotógrafo estu-viera feliz de ayudarme.

La persona de la que hablo es Ro-berto Bedoya, uno de los tantos pro-fesionales que hace de Cali su hogar y que además de ver la vida a través de una lente es instructor certi! cado de artes marciales.

Acordamos un encuentro para hacer un recorrido por la urbe y tomar algunas fotos. Nuestra primera etapa fue Cristo Rey, lugar ubicado en la parte alta del oeste de Cali. Desde

Rey was ! nished in 1953, just in time to commemorate the 50-year anniver-sary of the end of the 1000-day war. At night it o# ers a spectacular view of the city. From about a thousand feet above the city, you can see the lights stretch out and disappear into the valley % oor. It’s an inspirational way to start an evening out, and maybe ! nish one…..

The drive down from the moun-tain was refreshing. Cali’s weather is very dependable. It ranges anywhere from a cool 60 F at night to a slightly balmy 85 F during the day. The best part of the day starts at about six in the evening. The wind that drops over the mountains to relieve the city is as reliable as the national anthem that plays on every radio station and every television station at 6 AM and 6 PM every day. This cool breeze blew us down from the mountains and into the Parque El Peñon. A great place to gather in a very informal environment, it sits right across the Rio Cali from an-other distinguished landmark, El Gato del Rio, a 10 foot bronze cat that was part of a renovation of the area some years back. The neighborhoods of El Peñon and Normandia o# er a tranquil setting, and a number of good res-taurants to choose from. We grabbed a couple of beers, and waited for a couple more friends we were meeting before we made our next move. We decided to move the fun to Granada.

Granada is a neighborhood in the north of Cali. It was originally a traditional residential area that turned into a thriving nighttime destination. There are a number of bars and res-taurants built into old homes. Roberto pointed out that with success came change. There are now a number of

newer establishments, some of them becoming traditions in their own right. We stepped into the Hotel Now. It’s a boutique hotel with a popular restau-rant, nightclub, and bar. The hotel sits at the top of the neighborhood that al-lows the rooftop pool bar a rather nice view of the city. It’s also becoming one of Cali’s newest and hottest traditions. Young people mingle between the bars on di# erent levels and the night-club until early hours of the morning. This is typical in Cali. People here get a late start for a night out. Staying out until all hours of the morning typically leads to a condition known as “guaya-bo”. We might call it a tired hangover.

After a few more drinks, Roberto mentioned that his friend was danc-ing at a small salsa club not too far away. He recommended we go take a look. Salsa is king in Cali. We move to a three-step rhythm here. There are at least a hundred “o$ cial” salsa schools here and many more informal. The music is infectious. No matter how awkward you feel dancing, it’s really di$ cult not to stand up and move. If you’ve come all the way to Cali, you need to take advantage of this. Whether you go to one of the small schools and dance (WORTH IT!!), or take in a show at one of the big venues (also worth it), you won’t be disappointed. It was getting late, so after a few dances we called it a night. Exhausted and sweaty, we said our goodbyes out on the sidewalk, and planned to do it again real soon.

If you talk to locals here, they might tell you that some of the chang-es over the years to Cali haven’t been the best, but they’ll all agree that hav-ing fun here will never lose its charm. You won’t be let down.

Bajar de la loma fue refrescante. El clima en Cali es el mismo todos los días y oscila entre los 18º C en la noche y los 30º C durante el día. Al caer la tarde hacia las seis, sopla el viento que baja de las montañas y limpia el sudor de todos los cuerpos. Esa brisa nos llevó al parque El Peñón, buen sitio para reu-nirse en un ambiente informal. Queda ubicado al otro lado del río donde se destaca el Gato del río, una estructura de bronce de tres metros de alto, obra de Hernando Tejada, que hizo parte de la renovación del río Cali emprendida hace algunos años. Los barrios El Pe-ñón y Normandía ofrecen un entorno tranquilo y buenos restaurantes. Aquí tomamos unas cervezas mientras es-perábamos unos compañeros.

Poco después nos encontramos con ellos y Roberto sugirió que fué-ramos a Granada. En el trayecto nos dimos cuenta de que Cali está atrave-sando por un importante proceso de trasformación vial hace ya un par de años, situación que bene! ciará a los caleños de cara a Los Juegos Mundia-les. Al ! nal del día llegamos a nuestro destino y nos encontramos con cale-ños felices, estado que los caracteriza.

Granada es un barrio del norte de Cali. Anteriormente era una zona re-sidencial y hoy es uno de los destinos nocturnos más importantes de la ciu-dad con restaurantes y bares ubicados

en casas viejas. Roberto me contó que gracias al éxito de esos establecimien-tos han llegado otros.

Entramos a Now, un hotel bou-tique muy popular además de club nocturno, restaurante y bar. Ubicado en la parte más alta de Granada ofrece una vista hermosa desde su terraza donde se encuentran el bar y la pisci-na. La gente joven va de ! esta hasta la madrugada, lo cual es típico en Cali. La diversión empieza tarde.

Después de varios cocteles Ro-berto mencionó que un amigo suyo estaba bailando en un club de salsa, un lugar pequeño no muy lejos de allí. Fuimos y estuvimos un buen rato.

En Cali la salsa es la reina. Hay al menos ochenta escuelas formales y muchas más informales. Cali se mueve a un ritmo de tres pasos y la música se contagia. No importa lo incómodo que se sienta uno bailando es imposible no levantarse y hacerlo. Si viene a Cali no puede dejar de ir a uno de esos clubes, así sea pequeño o grande con espec-táculos que valen la pena. Ya era tarde. Minutos después de bailar, salimos y comentamos sobre lo bueno que sería hacerlo otra vez.

Si habla con algún caleño puede que él le diga que los recientes cam-bios en materia de infraestructura por los que atraviesa la ciudad no son los mejores, pero yo sí le puedo decir, que todos coinciden en que Cali nunca pierde su encanto. No se ahogue en un vaso de agua y disfrute ¡porque Cali no decepciona!

Cali Looking Forward to The World Games

Rodrigo Otoya is a sportsman, executive, and businessman. He is the President of the Cali Local Orga-nizing Committee (CLOC). His expe-rience with success quali! es him as the right person to take the helm of this big challenge. He seeks, in the face of an event of this magnitude, to show Colombians and the rest of the world, the special and beautiful welcoming that we have to o# er.

His dynamic ability to get things moving has, day after day, seen Cali more and more prepared for the ar-rival of The Games.

Our city is in great shape to wel-come the athletes and delegates from 120 countries, and tourists alike. He’s con! dent because of his close relationship with those in charge of transportation, the sport-ing infrastructure, and the hotel sec-tor. All of which are integral to the success of the games.

Is the Local Organizing Commit-tee of The World Games accomplish-ing all of the necessary steps and within the budget?

RO: The timeline and budget are being executed within the expected time and costs established. We’ve already received the ! rst imburse-ment of about $10 million US dollars that corresponds with the ! gure laid out by Coldeportes. Also, the Mayor’s o$ ce of Cali has come through with their promise to support the cost of design, architecture, and construction on various venues around the city.

“We’ve really been able to work well with The World Games partners, including the Mayor’s o$ ce, the state Government, and Coldeportes.

What are the challenges that have arisen for the Local Committee in relation to the games?

RO: The main challenge we have is to accomplish all of the activities that we currently have on the books. We want to leave a legacy for the city so that it can continue to be the site of great events in the future, and we want to work hard at making these games the best that have ever taken place.

What can Cali, Colombia, and the world expect to experience during The World Games?

RO: The games are going to be a magic experience, where the ex-change of culture and experience will thrive. There will be both a lot of

cultural experiences and sport. Be-yond that, here in Cali the people are going to get some great exposure to sports they have never seen before.

What does it mean to have one of the most important sporting events in your own back yard?

RO: The fact is that our budget will irrigate with more than $50 mil-lion USD all of the various business sectors that are related to the devel-opment of the games. This should bene! t not just the city, but reach out to businesses across the state as well. Also, with the in% ux of people during that time, many other small businesses should % ourish.

What is your strategy to build interest in The World Games?

The Organizing Committee is designing strategies and campaigns in order to promote and di# use our message throughout the sports world in order to stimulate interest and get them here. We de! nitely are looking for cooperation from all of the media outlets in order to gener-ate as much publicity and excite-ment for the biggest sporting event for South America in 2013, The World Games.

Cali preparada para recibir Los Juegos Mundiales

RO. El hecho de irrigar un pre-supuesto de más de 50 millones de dólares en diferentes sectores de la economía que tienen que ver con el desarrollo de Los Juegos dará un impulso importante a la economía de la ciudad, y por qué no, a la del de-partamento. Durante el evento, todos los sectores acogerán un gran número de personas que se darán cita en Los Juegos Mundiales 2013.

¿Cuál es su invitación para que el mundo deportivo vuelva su mirada a Los Juegos Mundiales?

RO. El Comité Organizador, está trabajando en el diseño de estrategias y campañas de difusión y promoción para lograr que el mundo deportivo se enfoque hacia el evento. Lo cierto, es que necesitamos el apoyo absoluto de los medios de comunicación para que multipliquen la invitación a lo que será el fenómeno deportivo más grande del 2013: Los Juegos Mundiales.

Es la primera vez en la historia que en América Latina se realizan Los Juegos Mundiales y desde luego Cali, que es la ciudad sede, está preparada y comprometida con tan grande acon-tecimiento.

Rodrigo Otoya, hombre del de-porte, ejecutivo y empresario, es el Presidente del comité local organizador de Cali. Sus experiencias de éxito lo rati! can como la persona idónea para asumir este reto. Busca que el resultado de efectuar un evento de esta natura-leza deje a la ciudad en la memoria de los colombianos y del mundo entero por ser tan especial, linda y acogedora.

Su capacidad y el dinamismo de su accionar han hecho que día a día Cali esté más preparada para realizar Los Juegos Mundiales.

“Nuestra ciudad está en buena forma para recibir a los deportistas, a las delegaciones de más de un centenar de países que asistirán a las justas y a los turistas. Lo digo porque cuenta con los medios de transporte, la infraestructura deportiva y hotelera que el evento requiere”.

¿El Comité Organizador de Los Juegos Mundiales está cumpliendo con los plazos y con el presupuesto estipulados?

RO. El cronograma y presupuesto se están ejecutando con alto grado de responsabilidad y dentro de los tiempos y los costos establecidos. Obtuvimos el primer desembolso de US$10 millones del presupuesto que le corresponde a Coldeportes y la Alcaldía de Cali realizó el aporte

correspondiente al costo de los diseños arquitectónicos y técnicos de los diferentes escenarios deportivos.

Se ha trabajado coordinadamente con los tres socios de Los Juegos Mun-diales: Coldeportes, la Alcaldía de Cali y la Gobernación del Valle.

Hablando de desafíos ¿cuáles son los retos que se ha trazado el Comité a propósito de Los Juegos Mundiales?

RO. Los retos del Comité Organiza-dor son principalmente el cumplir con la ejecución de todas las actividades previstas, dejarle un legado a la ciudad para que continúe siendo la sede de grandes eventos y trabajar de manera articulada para que Los Juegos se conviertan en los mejores realizados hasta el momento.

Respecto a lo que se avecina, ¿qué vivirá Cali, Colombia y el mundo durante Los Juegos Mundiales?

RO. Los Juegos serán una expe-riencia mágica en la que primará el intercambio de culturas y vivencias. Habrá una combinación de espec-táculos culturales y mucho deporte. Además, los caleños presenciarán en acción disciplinas deportivas poco practicadas en Colombia.

A propósito de la economía, ¿qué signi! cará para Cali realizar uno de los eventos multidisciplinarios más impor-tante del mundo?

The way to Cali is via Cali. The Ju-Jitsu World Championship in the Colombian metropolis of Cali in mid-October is part of the nomination process for The World Games 2013, which will also be staged in Cali. However, the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF) will not nominate its athletes for the multi-sport event before the end of 2012, after additio-nal qualifying competitions in that year.

Unlike for the Olympics, it is not the National Federations that nomi-nate the participants for The World Games competitions. The Interna-tional Federations set up the criteria and identify the best athletes to take part in the multi-sport event, which takes place every four years in the year following the Olympic Games. A real sporting challenge, because more than 3500 athletes compete in 30+ sports with a total of 177 disci-plines.

The ! rst of the 29 participating Member Federations of the Interna-tional World Games Association have already selected ! rm names and nations: At the World Champions-hip in Montpellier (France) the FIG already nominated the ! rst partici-panting nations for the individual competitions in Rhythmic Gymnas-tics. Among other athletes, Evgenia Kanaeva from Russia obtained her ticket to The World Games which take place in Colombia from 25 July to 4 August 2013.

In November 2011, the FIG held the quali! cations for the disciplines

of Tumbling, Double Mini and Tram-poline Synchro on the occasion of the World Championship in Tram-poline and Tumbling in Birmingham (UK). After the tournament FIG allo-cated the countries whose NOCs will nominate their competitors. Colom-bia has been quali! ed with a wild card for Trampoline Synchro Men competition.

The Fistball teams for Cali are also already known. The IFA nomina-ted the six best teams at the World Championship in Austria last August for the tournament to be held during the 9th edition of The World Games in 2013. The teams will be: Germany, Austria, Brazil, Argentina, Switzer-land and Chile. In addition, the nomination criteria ensure that, in case one of the teams fails to appear, Colombia will get a wild card.

Another IWGA Member Federa-tion that has also nominated teams for The World Games is the Inter-national Korfball Federation. The best eight teams (The Netherlands, Belgium, Chinese Taipei, Spain, Great Britain, Russia, Portugal and Czech Republic) of the World Champions-hip hosted by Shaoxing, China from 27 October to 5 November 2011 will also compete in Cali.

Most Member Federations will use this year for their qualifying competitions. The criteria di# er: Racquetball, Powerlifting and other sports focus on the results of their 2012 World Championships. The World Dance Sport Federation uses

the World Rankings for the tourna-ments in Standard, Latin American and in Salsa at The World Games. Numerous federations, including the International Roller Sports Fede-ration (FIRS) and the International Sumo Federation, each reserve a “Wild Card” for the host country Co-lombia.

The same applies to the quali-fying regulations of the International Rugby Federation. Moreover, Fiji can already look forward to their appearance in Cali. As the current Rugby Sevens TWG champion they are automatically quali! ed. The IRB will nominate the remaining partici-pants from among the quali! ers of the regional tournaments. The World Karate Federation also relies on the results of continental championships for their quali! cation procedure.

The nominations will end with the publication of the Rugby qua-li! ers on January 31, 2013 and the International Federation of Sport Climbing, which compiles its list of names for The World Games 2013 on the same date.

El Campeonato Mundial de Ju Jitsu que se realizó en Cali a mediados de octubre del 2011, es parte del proceso de nombramiento para Los Juegos Mundiales 2013, que también se ce-lebrarán en esta ciudad. Sin embargo, la Federación Internacional de Ju Jitsu (JJIF) no nombrará a los atletas que asistirán al evento multideportivo antes de ! nalizar el 2012; lo hará has-ta después de las competencias de clasi! cación adicionales de este año.

A diferencia de los Juegos Olímpi-cos, las Federaciones Nacionales no son las que nombran los deportistas que estarán en las competencias de Los Juegos Mundiales. Las Federa-ciones Internacionales establecen los criterios e identi! can a los mejores atletas que participarán en el evento multideportivo, el cual se celebra cada cuatro años y un año después de los Juegos Olímpicos. Este es un verda-dero reto deportivo, porque cerca de 3.500 atletas compiten en más de 30 disciplinas deportivas y en casi 177 eventos.

Algunas de las 29 Federaciones que forman parte de la Asociación Internacional de Los Juegos Mundiales (IWGA) ya han seleccionado nombres y naciones: en el Campeonato Mundial en Montpellier (Francia), la Federación Internacional de Gimnasia (FIG) designó las primeras naciones participantes para las competencias individuales en gimnasia rítmica. Entre otros atletas, Evgenia Kanaeva de Rusia obtuvo su boleto a Los Juegos Mundiales que se llevarán a cabo en Colombia del 25 de julio al 4 de agosto

vó a cabo las clasi! caciones para las modalidades de tumbling, doble mini y trampolín synchro por motivo del Campeonato Mundial de Trampolín y Tumbling en Birmingham (Reino Unido). Después del torneo, la FIG determinó que los Comités Olímpicos (NOC) de cada país se encargaran de elegir a sus competidores. Colombia ha clasi! cado con una WC (invitación) para la competencia masculina de trampolín synchro.

Ya se tiene conocimiento de los equipos de Fistball que participarán en Cali. La Federación Internacional de fistball (IFA) nombró a los seis mejores equipos en el Campeonato Mundial en Austria en agosto pasado, para el torneo que se realizará duran-te la novena edición de Los Juegos Mundiales en el 2013. Los equipos serán: Alemania, Austria, Brasil, Ar-gentina, Suiza y Chile. Además, los cri-terios de clasi! cación aseguran que, en caso de que uno de los equipos no se presente, Colombia obtendrá una invitación (Wild Card).

La Federación Internacional de Korfball de la IWGA, también ha clasi! cado equipos para Los Juegos Mundiales. Los ocho mejores equipos (Países Bajos, Bélgica, China Taipei, España, Gran Bretaña, Rusia, Portugal y República Checa) del Campeonato Mundial con sede en Shaoxing, China, realizado desde el 27 de octubre hasta el 5 de noviembre de 2011, también competirán en Cali.

La mayoría de las Federaciones

realizarán este año las competencias de clasi! cación. Los criterios di! eren: racquetball, pesas potencia y otros deportes se enfocan en los resultados de los Campeonatos Mundiales del 2012. La Federación mundial de Baile Deportivo utiliza el ranking mundial para los torneos en las modalidades de Estándar, Latinos y Salsa en Los Jue-gos Mundiales. Muchas Federaciones, incluida la Federación Internacional de patinaje (FIRS) y la Federación Internacional de Sumo, reservan una invitación (Wild Card)para el país sede, Colombia.

Lo mismo se aplica para las normas de clasi! cación de la Federación Inter-nacional de Rugby. Por otra parte, Fiji tiene asegurada su presencia en Cali, pues al ser el campeón de Rugby Siete en los anteriores Juegos Mundiales, queda automáticamente calificado. La Federación Internacional de Rugby (IRB) nombrará a los deportistas res-tantes entre los que han clasi! cado en los torneos regionales. La Federación Mundial de Karate también se basa en los resultados de campeonatos continentales para su proceso de clasi! cación.

La clasificación termina con la publicación de los que se elijan en Rugby el 31 de enero del 2013 y en la Federación Internacional de Escalada, que recoge su lista de nombres para Los Juegos Mundiales 2013, en la misma fecha.

Test events and related events are a great opportunity for Colombia and The World Games on many levels. First o# , the Local Organizing Committee and International Federations can make sure that all the venues are ready for the upcoming events. Secondly, it’s an opportunity to measure the ability of the infrastructure in its entirety. It’s not just about the condition of the ! eld of play, but also the ability of the medical sta# , volunteers, the technology, and everything else related to making sure that all the logistics for The World Games 2013 Cali are in precise working order.

During 2012 a number of test and related events will take place in Cali and the surrounding area con! rmed by TWG2013.

Los eventos de prueba y los asociados son muy positivos para Colombia y para Los Juegos Mundiales por varias razones; entre las cuales se encuentran la posibilidad que tiene la organiza-ción de asegurarse de que todos los escenarios deportivos estén listos en las fechas previstas y el poder revisar y probar que todos los demás aspectos relacionados con Lo Juegos Mundiales como el voluntariado, el personal médico, las comunicaciones, la acreditación de los equipos, los calendarios de competencia y la logística en general se desarrollen a la perfección.

Por consiguiente, a lo largo del 2012 se cum-plirá con un gran número de eventos de prueba y eventos asociados con! rmados por la organi-zación de Los Juegos Mundiales de Cali.

Pedro Sánchez Por Farid Barbosa

Pedro Sánchez recibió una invitación para una capaci-tación de korftball y terminó como el preparador de este deporte para Los Juegos Mundiales 2013 Cali.

Todo comenzó cuando aceptó un ofrecimiento de Angéli-ca Duque, estudiante de la Escuela Nacional del Deporte, para que asistiera a un taller que dictaba Albert Vidanya, asesor del Departamento Técnico de la Federación Internacional de korfball (IKF) y Director General de la Federación Catalana de este deporte: “Los participantes eran todos estudiantes de la escuela. El único que venía de actividades diferentes era yo. Tuve que sacar un permiso especial para hacer parte de las jornadas de formación”, dice el aventajado estudiante.

Fue tan importante el taller que se interesó" por conocer a fondo el korftball y empezó a dialogar con Vidanya: “Me motivaron los seminarios y el profesor también se entusiasmó con mi trabajo…. Me comentó el proyecto para Colombia y me pidió contribuir con él”. La decisión fue preparar al grupo de principiantes, consecuencia del liderazgo demostrado en esta capacitación.

“Me posicioné rápidamente con los deportistas y con los conocimientos que tengo me acondicioné "a la técnica de este deporte”. Agrega además, que tiene la experiencia en la organización de grupos de trabajo y por mucho tiempo ha sido practicante y entrenador de karate.

De las clases y los diálogos con la organización deportiva de Los Juegos Mundiales y con Albert Vidanya, pasó a la etapa de práctica: “Vidanya, me entregó unidades didácticas que incluían planes de entrenamiento y poco después, empeza-mos el proceso con los principiantes”.

Ha pasado un año desde que Pedro inició el trabajo con los jóvenes. Su disciplina e interés le han permitido ganar un espacio para entrenar de forma permanente en la Escuela Nacional. Hoy en día prepara a los deportistas y" Angélica Duque la becada estudiante que le cursó la invitación, es la capitana del equipo y el canal más directo de comunicación con el grupo. De estudiante a entrenador, un claro ejemplo de superación y esfuerzo.

The Lasting Legacy of The World Games 2013 Cali

The World Games 2013 Cali have become a platform for little known sports on the national stage. More than that, it’s the ! rst time in history that a Latin American country will be the site of The World Games.

Thanks to the work of the organizing committee of The World Games 2013 Cali, sports such as ! stball, sumo, ultima-te, boules sport, korfball, power lifting, and dance sport have undertaken the road to establishing their federations.

A case in point is dance sport, a practice not seen in this country as a sport. However, dance in this country is very well known, and is synonymous with fun and entertainment. It’s now being converted into an athletic mix of art and sport at its highest level of competition.

Viviana Burbano, one of Colombia’s representatives of dance sport, fell in love with the idea of making this disci-pline part of a recognized federation. The work toward this goal has been constant and resolute. As much as when a skilled athlete works for a prized gold medal.

It all started a few years ago. “In 2007 I asked Coldeportes to put dance sport in their national system”, relayed Viviana.

Since then, despite the wait, she has been able to streng-then and promote the discipline. Thanks to her persistence, and the support of the Sports Director of the World Federa-tion, Marco Sietas, the 1st Open of dance sport will take place here in Cali on July 21st and 22nd of this year. “Sport Salsa” will be an addition to the structure of this sport, and has its roots ! rmly planted in Cali.

With this level of structure, and the backing of The World Games Organization, “I will carry out the ! rst judging semi-nar directed by famed international judge, Joan Cayuela, in June of this year. We’ll then hold the ! rst global conference of Sport Salsa in September”, pointed out Burbano.

It’s undisputable that The World Games 2013 Cali will make history. By helping form new federations, they will leave a lasting legacy for both the country and the sport of Salsa.

Legado perdurable de Los Juegos Mundiales 2013 Cali

Los Juegos Mundiales 2013 Cali, se han convertido en una plataforma para varios deportes poco conocidos en el ámbito deportivo nacional. Más, cuando por primera vez en la historia un país de latinoamérica es la sede de unos Juegos Mundiales.

Gracias al trabajo de la Organización de Los Juegos Mun-diales 2013 Cali, deportes del programa de Juegos como el ! stball, el sumo, el ultimate, las bochas, el korfball, las pesas potencia y el baile deportivo, han emprendido el camino hacia la constitución de sus federaciones.

Caso particular es el baile deportivo, disciplina no muy co-nocida en este país. Pero que dejó de ser sinónimo de diversión y de ! esta, para convertirse en una disciplina deportiva de alto nivel que fusiona el arte y la competencia.

El baile deportivo ha logrado enamorar y hacer soñar a la representante de Colombia en este deporte, Viviana Burbano, en convertirlo en una disciplina federada. El trabajo ha sido constante e inquebrantable. Como cuando un atleta lucha por conseguir la tan anhelada medalla dorada.

Todo empezó hace ya varios años, cuando la señora Bur-bano, solicitó en el 2007 a Coldeportes que el baile deportivo fuera incluido dentro del Sistema Nacional del Deporte. Desde entonces, pese a su espera, ha logrado fortalecer y promocionar la disciplina. Además, gracias a su constancia ha obtenido el apoyo del director deportivo de la Federación Mundial, Marco Sietas, para la realización del Primer Open WDSF de Baile De-portivo Cali, en julio 21 y 22 de este año. Y para estructurar un nuevo estilo de baile, “La Salsa Deportiva”, que nace en Cali.

A nivel de formación, y con el respaldo de la Organización de Los Juegos Mundiales, realizará el Primer Seminario de Juz-gamiento dictado por el Juez internacional Joan Cayuela, en junio de 2012. Y el Primer Congreso Mundial de Salsa Deportiva, en septiembre del mismo año.

Es indiscutible que de esta forma, Los Juegos Mundiales 2013 Cali, hacen historia. Le entregan un legado perdurable al país y al deporte al apoyar la constitución de nuevas fede-raciones.
