IBM Corporation #Lets look at the Cars.com mobile app as an example. Cars.com is a consumer of APIs, and has assembled several 3rd party APIs together to form the base function of their cars app. For example, they use a Map Provider API to provide a store locator functionAPIs from a car dealer data aggregator for availability of certain makes and models. They use APIs from a Bank to offer Loan calculators and origination Auto insurance from an Insurance companies APIsAnd can imagine them using the new Xtify API from IBM to provide notifications, that a car they were looking for was now found.

IBM Corporation #Now, lets look at the API Economy from the Providers perspectiveThe Bank can extend its reach beyond customers doing on-line banking. By offering an API, that includes Mortgage Calculators, Lon Origination, On-line Payment, and Account Querythe bank can reach new mobile app providers link Cars.com (automotive sales), Zillow (on line real-estate), and Mint (financial data aggregator) 10

APIAPI

IBM Corporation #How many of you have entered a brick and mortar bank over the last 30 days?... Today, you dont even need to enter a bank or a car dealership to purchase a vehicle. Because with APIs a personalized buying experience can be delivered in a 4x8 screen.

Story of auto repair chain. Was doing business as usual, and did not realize the amount of data they were sitting on vehicle maintenance records, historical tire wear data, driver behavior, etc. - now they are exposing vehicle service data to dealerships, to Kelly Blue book, to end users data on tire wear by vehicle type, engine repair history and service, etc. - they opened a whole new channel of business in less than 1 month, with a profit profile stronger than their traditional business11

IBM Corporation #Together, these trends place significant demands onto todays organizations and significant opportunities before them.

Front-line decision making drives escalating client expectations for wonderful, personalized and instant experiencesThe ability to create new business moments from insight-driven processes causes Intensifying competition from existing sources, and new disruptive forcesAnd the API economy drives Increasing complexity of business models, ecosystems and technology landscapes

Organizations must operate with greater customer centricity and agility in order to thrive in this environment, which places huge importance on every interaction.11/25/1512

Quote:The Bluemix platform served as a great enabler when running the Nordea Innovation Challenge, it supported the entire development lifecycle in an easy to understand way. Carl Risberg, Head of Architecture & Technology, Nordea Bank

Company background:Nordea Bank AB, commonly referred to as Nordea, is a Nordic-based financial services group operating in Northern Europe.

Solution components:IBM BluemixSoftLayer IBM API Management

Business challenge:As FinTech start-ups continue to disrupt the banking value chain with consumer focused digital apps and services, the traditional relationship between the bank and customer loses relevancy. In order to tap into the latest innovations and bring the culture of disruption into their own company, Nordea Bank worked with IBM to host a two-day Innovation Challenge hackathon, which would bring in start-ups and local developers from Stockholm and Helsinki to build apps on IBM Bluemix.

Benefits:The Innovation Challenge brought local start-ups and developers into Nordeas ecosystem and produced a whole set of new apps on IBM Bluemix, created in just 48 hours by the teams. Not only did it allow Nordea to tap into this community, but it also provided them with fresh ideas for disruptive banking applications that they may implement in some form into their own company. The Innovation Challenge was such a success that Nordea are launching one of the entries to production and hope to conduct similar events in the future, and even expand them globally.

Can use not only the Saas and Bluemix, but can also use APIM and DP to take an existing service and expose into an API. - IIB connecting to back end systems - MQ microservices connecting - securing APIs

Already 87 services! Not only IBM, but also lots of 3rd party and open source. We supply the BEST tools (box for documents, sendgrid for email, twilio for phone etc)Use open source aggressively mongodb, redis, sparkHave key services like Watson and on premises integration features

so, whats cool about that?

IBM Corporation #Speaking Points:The first one is choice with consistency. There is no one model that will solve all of your problems. Just like you have multiple pieces inside your data centers.Everything from bare metal where you really provide the environmentTo virtual machines and containersAll the way out to platform-as-a-service, in IBMs case, Bluemix. We talk about public clouds and private clouds, but the reality is the world will use both. Everyone will go to world that is somewhat hybrid. One size does not fit all and you need make sure the runtimes and delivery models suit the spectrum of needs you have. And you want to have consistency so you can move the workloads depending on the dynamics of needs.

IBM

IBM Corporation #Speaking Points:When we talk about hybrid its not just connecting cloud to your on-premises systems, its also about cloud to cloud. Because some of those business processes on cloud A will need to be connected to cloud BThink about six connection points: Integration: xx How easy is it for me to build my application that connects to data that I have in a different system or to another service that I need that is running on another cloud.Visibility and Control: You have to see whats going on . And by the way you want to automate it and you want to instrument it because all the interactions that are going on are giving you valuable information that will allow you to build a better business process. It will also enable you to monitor whats going on not just in the infrastructure, but also in the business processes.Security: Its the most asked about area. We contend that the cloud is more secure than 90% of the traditional infrastructure today. You need an end-to-end view and security at every interaction point.DevOps is critical: The world is moving fast. How many of you have SmartPhones that overnight had a number of apps updated. Were starting to see automation to quickly update and release apps. And developers need a different environment and set of toolsPortability: A cloud is not a cloud, is not a cloud, is not a cloud. We have to work on open standards so you have the freedom to move workloads that make the best economic and value sense as a client. Data Localization and Management: When you deal with the massive amounts of data required you have to be able to move and manage it well.

SaaSPaaSIaaS

LocalDedicatedPublic

Speaking Points:Its got to be open.We are open by design. At the infrastructure level weve made a commitment to OpenStack from local to dedicated to public so that you have that level of consistency. That software defined environment is becoming the new operating system and we know how important that is for portability and interoperabilityAnd whether its Cloud Foundry, Docker or nodejs we want to be able to provide your developers with the best set of tools and runtimes that enables them to move quickly.
