1. Introduction

In this Project, we have to plan our own city as mayor of a city. There 5 option of type of city we can choose form, Underwater, Floating on Water, In the sky, Underground and Enhance Current City which in my case, I had chosen Floating on water. There are two parts in this project, Part A and Part B. Part A, an individual work, we have to create a video and also to write report. Part B is a group work in which we have to create and the model of the city from part A and also a A1presentation board describing out city.

2. The City

The City Definition: An inhabited place of greater size, population, or importance than a town or

village. A center of population, commerce, and culture; a town of significant size and

importance.

A settlement hierarchy is a way of arranging settlements into a hierarchy based upon their population or some other criteria.

System Hierarchy Expalnation

Isolated dwelling 1 or 2 buildings or families in it. It would have negligible services, if any.

Hamlet a tiny population (<100) and very few (if any) services, and few buildings.

Village  does not have many services, possibly only a small corner shop or post office. A village has a population of 100 to 1,000.

Town a population of 1,000 to 20,000.

ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation

City  have abundant services, but not as many as a large city. The population of a city is over 100,000 people up to 300,000.

Large city a city with a large population and many services. The population is <1 million people but over 300,000 people.

Metropolis a large city and its suburbs consisting of multiple cities and towns. The population is usually one to three million.

Conurbation a group of large cities and their suburbs, consisting of three to ten million people.

Megalopolis  a group of conurbations, consisting of more than ten million people each

What makes a city:

There is a lot of ways a city can me made. It could have started of as a small village and grow into a village in time or it was design as a city from the very start or maybe it was made when two towns or more join together.

What makes a good city:

The concept of the smart city has been introduced as a strategic device to encompass modern urban production factors in a common framework and to highlight the growing importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)

Smart cities can be identified (and ranked) along six main axes or dimensions: smart economy smart mobility smart environment smart people smart living smart governance

3. Investigation & Data Collection:Tenochtiltan (Ancient Cities)

History:

Tenochtiltan is a city located on an island in Lake Texcoco, in the Valley of Mexico. It was founded in 1325 and became the capital of the expanding Mexica Empire in the 15th century, until captured by the Spanish 1952. It was also once the largest city in the Pre-Columbian Americas.

It started off on a muddy island in the lake that at that time filled the Basin of Mexico. By 1519, the year the Spaniards arrived, It had a population of more than 200,000. Between 1519 and 1521, It was besieged several times by the Spaniards under Hernán Cortés.

Cuauhtémoc was the last emperor of the Aztec Empire thet rule Tenochtiltan, reigning from 1520 until his capture by the Spanish. He resisted Spanish conquerors from their first appearance, led Aztec warriors in their final battle, and endured torture at the hands of Spaniards seeking treasure after his defeat.

Tenochtiltan Lifestyle:

Tenochtiltan practiced Intensive agricultural practices to support its large and concentrated population. Within the main part of the city the population was composed mainly of priests, warriors and administrators. The city was connected to the mainland by a series of wide causeways with bridges. The city was interlaced with a series of canals, so that all sections of the city could be visited either on foot or via canoe.  It also have its own large scale market place to were one of the largest in the world at that time.

Ancient city conclusion:

Tenochtiltan is among the largest city in the world of its time. With the help of trained engineers, builders, and traders, the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan became a great city. It is self-sustainable.

Things can be used for my City:

Tenochtiltan is a city floating on water, the same my city would be. Tenochtiltan uses more that just normal roads, it uses the pond water as its road and the canoe for the peoples to travel from one place to another so I would use the same but with ships instead. In addition, it practiced intensive agriculture practice to sustain the city itself. For my City, I would focus both on intensive agriculture and also produce my own energy to sustain my city. The city of Tenochtiltan was well organized just like how my city would be. The city also develop by increasing the land, my city would be the same but by adding more Island to the city.

4. Investigation & Data Collection:Venice(Present Cities)

History:It wasn’t clear when Venice was founded but according to tradition, Venice was founded in 421 AD on March 25th by refugees from Roman cities and the peoples running away from the invasion of Barbarians such as Germanic and Hun. From the 9th to the 12th century, Venice developed into a city state. In 1866 to see Venice join together with Italy.

Venice City Overview:Venice famous for the many waterways which criss-cross through it. It has developed a romantic reputation, and has a history dating from the sixth century. Venice is sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by hundreds of bridges in a lagoon. Consisting of many Canals, the main transportation of Venice was its mostly on water and also walking, The city of Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "City of Canals" and “The Floating City”

Learning From Venice City:The concept of joining of Islands is very useful. Instead of joining hundreds of small natural Island, I would like my city to be join by 5 large artificial Island with each Island connected by Bridges and also the largest Island as the main Island

situated in the middle of the other 4 Island. Transportation used will be as the same how Venice was, with boat or by foot.

5. Investigation & Data Collection:Future Cities

Future City Idea origin:A special mention in the eVolo Skyscraper Competition , the design expands the concept of a floating island into a full-fledged underwater skyscraper that

harvests renewable energy and grows its own food. An Underwater Skyscraper is a Self-Sufficient City at Sea.

Underwater Skyscraper Concept:

Ocean levels are rising around the globe, so the approach of the underwater skyscraper is to make buildings and suit them for a life at sea, a futuristic self-sufficient floating city.

Touted as a self-sufficient floating city, the skyscraper utilizes a variety of green technologies. It generates its own electricity using wave, wind, and solar power and it produces its own food through farming, aquaculture, and hydroponic techniques. The surface of the submerged skyscraper sustains a small forest, while the lower levels contain spaces for its inhabitants to live and work. The building is kept upright using a system of ballasts aided by a set of squid-like tentacles that generate kinetic energy.

Learning from Research:

The idea was great, a self-sustaining floating city is a great idea for my floating city. Using Ballast system as a floating concept is also useful.

6. Buoy City

The original Buoy City was just a city build beside sea. After a great flood and tsunami that hit the whole world making some places permanently flooded, The original Buoy City was gone but most of the population was able to able to survive thanks to early warning.

Buoy City, with Buoy meaning float, was a city just beside the sea. It is situated close to Semporna, another city in Sabah. Most of the population are Malays, Chinese and also Indians. The city used to be a city famous for fishing, wave energy production and tourism. There is also a lot of business man working there due to the rich natural resources so in some way, the city consist of rich people as well since natural resources is very limited at that time.

7. The New Buoy City

(describe the new facilities, characters etc of the new city…. Insert information realted to the brief “Part A iii C”)

Reason for a floating Island:

The floating city is cheaper compared to other ideas and has the same altitude in sea level. The city is also covered by a force field. The city is also capable of staying underwater for a week at least and 2 week at most.

Tsang Hao Ren | 0315753 | Group W | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University11

Page 12: ENBE Part A template

ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation

Shape of the City:

The shape of the city is a hemisphere when view from the side and a circle when view from above. The circular shape of the city make it easier to create an effective transportation link that goes round the Island. The semi-circle shape of the city is for the effectiveness of the Buoyant System to float.

The Main Focus of the City:The city includes a square known as pine square, a big shopping known as the city mall, theme park and sports park.

Page 13: ENBE Part A template

ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation

Zoning of the city:The city is separated to different zone from Zone A to Zone I. Each zone have one or more function. For example, zone A function as Central Park and also the Main Bus Station.

Housing:The residential area is separated into a few groups namely First Class, Second Class, Economy Class and also Special Class. First Class is a Semi-D house, Second Class is terrace housing, economy class is for apartments and Special Class are for Orphans and also Old Folks.

Facilities:The Facilities includes a school, government working area, offices, schools for for children and also a University for Higher Education. There is also a Hospital, Fire Fighter and Police station near residential areas.

Food:To get food, the city mainly uses farming, agriculture and also fishing.

Transport:The main transport of the city is ships. Bicycles and walking is also other options of transport.

Characteristic :There will be normal roads on this city, the city will use sea water as the road, The sea will be connected by bridges and there will also be a lot of canal within the cities.

8. The Process & Progress

At the first week of my project, I started off by researching on future cities and also choosing what type of city. I research written all the pros and cons of underground, underwater, floating on water, floating on air and enhanced cities. The one with the most pros and less cons were the cities floating on water and also enhanced cities.

After Research, our group members agreed to make a simple report on how each our cities works after our research. This is what I wrote in my report.

City Floating on water

Why live on water?

As the result of global warming, the land of Malaysia was almost completely destroyed by an unexpected flood, sinking most of the land PERMANENTLY. Therefore, a flosting city is being built to overcome the increasing water level.

Reason for a floating Island:

The floating city is cheaper compared to other ideas and has the same altitude in sea level. The city is also covered by a force field. The city is also capable of staying underwater for a week at least and 2 week at most.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1990/is-it-possible-to-create-a-science-fiction-type-force-field (Force Field Theory)

How to get food and energy:

It generates its own electricity using wave, wind, and solar power and it produces its own food through farming, aquaculture, and hydroponic techniques.

http://inhabitat.com/underwater-skyscraper-is-a-self-sufficient-city-at-sea/

Transport:

Using a pressurize water tube containing a train as a transport from island to island. (still finding information about this)

http://johncarlosbaez.wordpress.com/2012/04/21/high-speed-personal-rapid-transportation/

Floating concept:

The same as an island, connected to the ground of the sea.

Page 17: ENBE Part A template

ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation

Then, I started putting all my research and try to plan my city. With the information found, I was able to make the following planning.

Afterwards, I recheck the Project Brief and found out that I must research into Ancients, Present and Future City before planning. After the research, I send powerpoint report during ENBE online tutorial.

After my research on Ancient, Present and Future Cities, I adapt the information into my city planning and also mix all the information with my previous research and come out better plan for my city.

After more planning and designing, even better and improved idea are formed and used in my video.

9. Conclusion

In the end, I was able to finish everything on time. It is important to read the project brief clearly over and over again so we don’t make mistake and forced to redo. In this project, I learned the important stuff that makes up a city and also the essentials in making a good city. I also learned that the different environment requires different type of building shape, materials or construction method.
