1. Macedonia (Macedonian: , transliterated: Makedonija),officially the Republic of Macedonia ( ,transliterated: Republika Makedonija ),is a country located in thecentral Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of thesuccessor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declaredindependence in 1991. It became a member of the UnitedNations in 1993 but, as a result of a dispute with Greece over itsname, it was admitted under the provisional reference of theformer Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia ( transliterated:Poranena Jugoslovenska Republika Makedonija), sometimesabbreviated as FYROM.A landlocked country, the Republic of Macedonia is bordered byKosovoto the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east,Greece to the south, and Albania to the west It constitutesapproximately the northwestern third of the larger geographicalregion of Macedonia, which also comprises the neighbouringparts of northern Greece and a smaller portion in Bulgaria. Thecountry's capital is Skopje, with 506,926 inhabitants according tothe 2002 census. Other cities include Bitoa, Kumanovo, Prilep,Tetovo, Ohrid, Veles, tip, Koani, Gostivar, Kavadarci andStrumica. It has more than 50 lakes and sixteen mountainshigher than 2,000 m (6,562 ft). Macedonia is a member of the UNand the Council of Europe. Mazedonien wurde 1944 im Widerstand alsSozialistische Republik Mazedonien gegrndet, war ab 1946 offiziell sdlichsteTeilrepublik des sozialistischen Jugoslawien und rief 1991 seine Unabhngigkeitaus. Seit Dezember 2005 hat Mazedonien den Status eines Beitrittskandidaten derEU. Das Land ist Mitglied der Vereinten Nationen (jedoch mit der Bezeichnungehemalige jugoslawische Republik Mazedonien), der CEFTA sowieTeilnehmerstaat der Organisation fr Sicherheit und Zusammenarbeit in Europa,des Europarats und des Kooperationsrats fr Sdosteuropa. Weiterhin istMazedonien Mitglied der Welthandelsorganisation, des InternationalenWhrungsfonds und der Weltbank.
