Adaption
Just as our natural environment is in a constant process of adaptive change, architecture can adapt to climatic requirements. With nature as the model, the Associate Profes-sorship of Architectural Design and Building Envelope developed buil-ding envelopes which, analogous to natural envelope systems, conside-red either diurnally or annually, be-have adaptively and responsively.

'Lotec' is an adaptive façade system for the independent regulation of shading and ventilation. The system is unmediated and does not require failure-prone electronics or complex mechanics. It uses no electricity, ex-ploiting instead the change in volu-me of certain materials at different temperatures. The desired geometri-cal change in the façade is triggered by thermal cylinder, whose length changes in response to the amount of thermal energy.

Inspired by the tulip bloom, which opens and closes in ac-cordance with the differenti-al growth of the outer and inner sides of its petals, a sun protec-tion module was designed with a similar opening mechanism. The greater the solar radiati-on, the more the module stret-ches its 'leaves' to shade the fa-çade surface. This mechanism is driven by thermo-reactive materi-als. The module can thus respond to changing levels of sunlight inde-pendently, without additional me-chanical or electronic devices.

The aim of the project was to de-velop an adaptive façade, which is able to change its permeability, ac-cording to weather conditions.By the temperature-induced change in length of compression struts, stretchable fabrics change both in their form and permeabili-ty. Thanks to the bimetals integra-ted in the struts, this process oc-curs independently and without additional energy consumption.

Against the background of adaptive natural phenomena, an abstract idea was translated into a conceptual building envelope. The starting point here was the movement of an eyelid.Open textile segments with integra-ted shape memory alloys open and close depending on the intensity of the surface radiation. In this way, skyward orientation occurs accor-ding to a harmonized progression within the façade. Thus, the degree of opening of the textile not only varies from segment to segment, but also within a single element.

Bionic transfer provides the in-spiration for the seminar "adap-tive". Systems inspired by na-ture and continuously improved over millions of years serve as a basis for building envelopes. In this case, a self-regula-ting sunscreen was develo-ped, which is located bet-ween the panes of a façade.

The analysis of various motion sys-tems of nature served as the source of inspiration for this façade. In ad-dition to heliotrope systems also the adapatability and the efficient use of light in cat eyes was analyzed. The superposition of these priciples combined with the complex require-ments of an intelligent building enve-lope resulted in geometrical studies that had been optimized towards ef-ficiency and aesthetic appeal.
