A CNC lathe is a machine tool which is usually composed of control system, servo system, detection system,

mechanical motion system and other auxiliary system. The operation of lathe mainly spin a block of material to perform

various operations such as turning, grinding, cutting, sanding, drilling, knurling, or spring coiling that are applied to

process axle, circle, screw and other round workpiece.

The spindle is crucial part to the lathe. It also has very important effect on increasing processing efficiency,

expanding the range of the workpiece and enhancing the processing quality. Delta’s AC servo motors and drives can be

utilized and synchronized with CNC controller to satisfy the requirements for spindle driving.

The requirements are:

(1) Flexible tuning range and stable speed.

(2) When operating under intermittent load, motor speed will fluctuate slightly.

(3) Acceleration and deceleration time is short.

(4) Overload capacity is strong.

(5) Lower noise, less vibration and longer life.

In lathe system, the speed signal is transmitted to the analog channels (voltage or current) of AC motor drive through

CNC system. After V/f curve is optimized and set in AC motor drive system, CNC controller can control the spindle speed

easily and freely. The V/f curve must include voltage and current commands, forward and reverse function, and polarity

settings so as to meet the needs of rapid forward and reverse rotation, flexible speed tuning and variable speed cutting

requested by CNC lathe system.

After spindle axis uses AC motor drive to perform stepless speed tuning operation, the following application challenges

can be tackled:

1. Simplify motion mechanical system

2. Complete precise constant speed control

3. Reduce maintenance of the clutch

4. Accomplish high-speed and constant-power operation easily

In terms of lathe application, the system which requires precision positioning and cutter exchange is called as a

rotary table (turret) application. For rotary table (turret) application, Delta ASDA-AB series servo system provides

built-in feed control (indexing) function to enable the users to drill or cut workpiece at exact intervals around a fixed axis.

In addition, in CNC controller part, the users use communication or digital I/O signals to complete feed control, torque

ripple attenuation and zero position error function to solve the position deviation problem caused by mechanical engage

error, and the problems of power lost and motor temperature rise as well.

Max. 27 index numbers are available in Delta ASDA-AB series, capable of controlling up to 27 cutters or knifes of the

lathe.
