Content-based Instruction

What is CBI?

• It is based on Immersion Education that originated in Canada

• Is a method of teaching that revolves around on teaching specific content or subject matter and not around linguistics or other type of syllabus.

• We learn the target language by applying it to a certain topic instead of prioritizing on learning the language

LANGUAGE is a vehicle for learning content

Assumptions• People learn a second language

more successfully when they use language as a means of acquiring information.

• It better reflect learners needs for learning a second language

More on CBI

• Curtain and Pesola (1994) limit the definition of CBI to those "...curriculum concepts being taught through the foreign language ... appropriate to the grade level of the students..."

• Genesee (1994) suggests that content '...need not be academic; it can include any topic, theme, or non-language issue of interest or importance to the learners'

LANGUAGE is purposeful…It is used for specific purpose

such as vocational, social or recreational. In order to make adjustments and simplifications for the students to learn.

Learner’s Roles• Become independent• Supports in cooperative tasks• Tolerates uncertainty• Willing to explore alternative learning strategies

Teacher’s Roles

• Good language teacher• Knowledgeable in the subject

matter• Knows how to draw out that

particular knowledge and has the capacity to convey it clearly

Principles• The subject matter content is used for

language teaching purposes.• Teaching should be build on student’s

previous experience• Learners feel motivated when they perceive

the relevance of the language used• The teacher helps students to complete or

build expressions when they can’t• Language is learned more effectively when it

used on purpose• Vocabulary is easer to acquire when there are

contextual clues to help convey the meaning• Language support is needed when they work

with authentic matter• Learners work with meaningful and

cognitively demanding language content• Communicative competence involves more

than using language conversationally

In a nutshell….

• CBI makes an assumption that learners learn best when they are given language in a meaningful, contextualized form with the primary focus on acquiring information–People learn a second language

more successfully when the information they acquire is interesting and satisfies them–Motivating because it doesn’t focus

on learning the language–Some content are useful–Experiences can share a lot of

knowledge

Same situations like these:

Admit it, they were your first teachers in learning the English language
