Gemeindebrief August, September & Oktober 2017
GEMEINDEBRIEF EVANGELISCH-LUTHERISCHE GEMEINDE
Südkap – Southern Cape – Suidkaap GEMEENTEBRIEF
EVANGELIES LUTHERSE GEMEENTE Newsletter of the Evangelic Lutheran Congregation
August-September-Oktober 2017
aufgebaut.

Gemeindebrief August, September & Oktober 2017
By grace alone!
Luther said : “So he [Paul in Titus 3:5-7] discards all boasted free will, all human virtue,
righteousness, and good works. He concludes that they are all nothing and are wholly
perverted, however brilliant and worthy they may appear, and teaches that we must be
saved solely by the grace of God, which is effective for
all believers who desire it from a correct conception of
their own ruin and nothingness.”
“We receive absolution [forgiveness] and grace at no
cost or labour on our part, but not without cost and
labour on the part of Christ.”
“Our salvation must exist, not in our righteousness,
but … in Christ’s righteousness. … Let his
righteousness and grace, not yours, be your refuge.”
“Yes, dear friend, you must first possess heaven
and salvation before you can do good works. Works
never merit heaven; heaven is conferred purely of
grace.” : Luther

SCHAAL memorials.
My sincere thanks to you and the wonderful church community
for all the help, love and support you have shown me and my
family in the past 6 months. The ladies who organised the tea
and coffees at both memorials were such a great help and I am
so thankful to you, Peter for reading out the two obituaries. It was lovely meeting and
getting to know my parents' friends better, despite the circumstances.
The beautiful little church on the top of the hill will always hold a special place in
our hearts. Not only are my parents resting there overlooking the sea, but my eldest
son was also christened there.
We wish everyone all of the best and until we meet again.

Oktober 1947 in Mariental, SWA ( Namibia)
Kanada emigriert. Dort wurde er Automechaniker und arbeitete mit
6
Gemeindebrief August, September & Oktober 2017
In

Gemeindebrief August, September & Oktober 2017
Fires in Knysna-Plett-Garden Route Areas 7 June 2017.
This disaster was classified as Type 1, a first in SA as per Clinton Manuel,
Knysna Fire Chief, incident commander and in charge of “Joint Operations Centre”
which coordinated all resource action in Plett and Knysna fires.
With contributions from the Ev.Lutheran Church of SA (Cape Church), Ev.Luth.
Congregation Braunschweig (KZN), St John’s Lutheran Church, Dawn (Eastern Cape),
Ev.Lutheran Congregation Southern Cape and private donations from congregants and
friends and the Gereformeerde Kerk Eden, assistance was possible directly to people
affected by the disaster. Gratitude, that does not have enough words to convey the
exact feelings going through the minds and hearts of the following people, have been
pouring in from them all. Thank you Lord, for every donar, every donation, all the Love
spread around at this time.
Scenes like these greeted many of the people listed below, when they went back
to their homes and workplaces ……..
Craig van Leeve lives on Farm Elandskraal,
behind Knysna, where the fires started.
His workshop burnt down in which he had a
home industry making gifts from recycled
materials. He sells them on the Sedgefield
Market – an upmarket venue.
Peter Goldfin and Gabriella Neururer. Their rented Cottage, Roodefontein B10,
Trinity Farm, Plett, and entire workshop and batik studio burnt down. Peter is an
engineer and does handyman work of all descriptions. He also does charity home
repairs in the community in which he lives. Gabriella does massage and therapeutic
work, as she is a qualified OT. They create “Goldphinbatik”, a unique style of paintings
and murals.
3 Families of Berry Farm employees living on Elandskraal School land lost their
houses. They were living in tents on the roadside opposite. A donar from CT got 3
wooden Wendy houses, but insisted they be put on cement flooring. Terence Atterbury,
a farmer from a neighbouring farm assisted to oversee construction. Clothing, bedding
and curtaining donated from East Cape Churches made their homes comfortable.
9
Gemeindebrief August, September & Oktober 2017
Cheryl & Nicholas Liepner lost their home and workshop on farm Elandskraal, as
well as their Antique Shop on the Simola Road in Knysna, Their son, who was
helping them fight fires on the farm, meanwhile lost his home on Welbedacht Road,
Knysna (near Timber Village).
Tamara Swart lost her roof to wind and belongings burnt in her garage.
Katherine Brodie and her husband have been housing and feeding 3 families
since the fire : her gardener, the caretaker of Oakhill School, a family friend. They
have a modest income.
Eddy and Val Cooper. Zimbabwean Veterans retired in Plett, near the Airport,
saved their home, but have lost all fencing and are uninsured.
On the Reitz Farm, Kranshoek Road, Plettenberg Bay, where the events venue
“Ouland Royale” was the only building that survived, contribution was made by
paying for a 3-plate gas “boiler table” stove for their workers.
Fred and Joselyn Mulany lost their home at Brenton on Lake, Knysna. They are a
retired couple, with modest means and modest insurance.
Margaret Macpherson, owner of the hairdressing studio "Evolve", Plettenberg
Bay, lost her house, outbuildings and her farm totally burnt, “BS Roodefontein” on
Airport Road.
Francois Barnard, owner of "Welgeluk Salig Boerdery" - sheep and vegetable
farmer, lost outbuildings, irrigation and other farming equipment and fencing.
Terence and Annetjie Atterbury have been such STARS assisting neighbours
and their own and other farm workers in the Elandskraal area, where fire damage
was at its worst as the fire started close by. They didn’t lose their house, but their
vegetable fields, tunnels, irrigation and especially crucial, their fencing was totally
burnt. These are some of the stories people had to tell,
and they where assisted from the generous donations received by our congregation.
Two bakkie loads of clothing, bedding, curtaining and household goods were
donated by the Lutheran Congregations of the Eastern Cape. A GREAT THANK
YOU goes out to all of the loving hands who donated and organised this effort. They
were all distributed and here are some smiles showing you all gratitude…..
Scenes of rebuilding … rising from the ashes are new existence possibilities.
THANK YOU all who made this possible.
