The Seven Sisters viewed from Herøyphoto Terje Rakke NordicLife/Helgeland Reiseliv
Helgeland is the southernmost part of Nordland County. The long coast of this region consists of a myriad of magnificent islands, some of which are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The best known peaks are The Seven Sisters on the coast. Inland, mountains rise almost 2000 metres above sea level. The Arctic Circle cuts through our region; when you pass 66 degrees latitude you enter the land of the midnight sun.
Welcome!

NATIONAL TOURIST ROUTE HELGELANDSKYSTEN
7Tourist office, +47 75 01 80 00
Many remarkable natural phenomena are found along this route. In the south you will pass the peaks of the Seven Sisters and the Torghatten mountain with it`s characteristic hole; in the north you can see the Svartisen glacier and the world’s strongest tidal current, the Saltstraumen.
The coast of Helgeland is characterised by a unique archipelago of more than 14 000 islands and islets. Long fjords break up the coastline; in-nermost in the fjords are industrial communities based on hydropower generation.
HELLÅGA:Make a stop and try your hand as an angler at Hellåga. This scenic rest area on the banks of the Sjona fjord offers plenty of opportunities for recreational activities. A flight of steps takes you safely down to the water’s edge. From the comfort of robust benches you can enjoy the view across the fjord. Hellåga also has a dump station for mo-torhomes.
JEKTVIK: The waiting room at Jektvik ferry quay is built of semi-transparent materials with a fibreglass skin. In the dark season, the service building lights up like a Chinese lantern for travellers arriving at Jek-tvik by ferry or car.
STORVIK:At Storvika bay, a charming stone-vault bridge has been erected to link the rest area to the long sandy beach just below. This rest area has a sanistation for motorhomes and a separate stop/rest area for heavy vehicles.
GODØYSTRAUMEN: Rest area and information centre where you can read about the four tidal currents Godøystraumen,
Saltstraumen, Åselistraumen and Kjellingstrau-men.
BRASET: Enjoy the panoramic view from Braset towards the Engabreen glacier and the Holandsfjord.
OTHER STOPS along this route include Grønsvik coastal fort, Kilboghavn, Forøy, Holand, Reppen rest area and Kleivhalsen viewpoint.
The National Tourist Route Helgelandskysten (Fv17) between Holm and Godøystraumen is 433 km long, with a scenic detour to Torghatten, a fa-mous mountain beyond Brønnøysund.
Several roads connect the tourist route to Euro-route 6, making it easy to alternate between them.

ROUTE 1: THE SEVEN SISTERS AT ALSTAHAUGWhile those who are looking for an extreme chal-lenge may aspire to ascend each of the Seven Sisters on the same day, most people are content to climb one or two of the summits at a time. There is way-marking up to each top, as well as between them.
To reach Botnkrona (1072 m) and Grytfoten (1019 m), drive 4 km southbound along highway Fv17 from Sandnessjøen, take the turnoff at Nymoen and con-tinue another 4 km to the parking lot. An additional one-kilometre walk along the same road takes you to the head of the trail to Skjæringen (1037 m) and Tvillingene (The Twins: 945 and 980 m). THE LEGEND OF HOW THE HELGELAND MOUNTAINS CAME TO BEAccording to an often-told legend, the hole through Torhatten was made by an arrow from the Horseman. “One evening the Horseman witnessed The SevenSisters and the Maiden of Leka bathing in the sea near the island of Lan-dego. Filled with passion for the Maiden of Leka, he decided to steal her away at midnight. In full armour and with a cape over his shoulders he galloped south. When the maidens saw him coming they fled, until exhausted they threw themselves to the ground near Alstahaug.
The Maiden of Leka continued southward, as the King of Sømnafjellene stood and watched her lonely, frenzied flight. As golden clouds signalled approac-hing dawn, the King saw the thwarted suitor lay an arrow on his bow. The moment the arrow left the bow-string, the King cast his hat into the air, saving the Maiden’s life. The King’s hat fell at Torgar, and with the sun’s first rays all were turned to stone.”

SALTFJELLET-SVARTISEN NATIONAL PARKThe pristine wilderness and varied landscapes of Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park offer a paradise for the eager adventurer. Svartisen, the second larg-est glacier on mainland Norway, covers a fifth of the national park. On your hikes, you may discover some of the many Sámi cultural monuments.
The national park has an extensive network of marked trails, including one that follows the old telegraph line between Rana and Saltdal. Along the trails are a number unmanned cabins and self-ser-vice mountain huts. Anglers will find excellent fish-ing opportunities for trout and char in the mountain lakes of Saltfjellet. In addition, there are four major salmon rivers originating in the national park, in-cluding Ranaelva river.
The eastern areas offer small game hunting, includ-ing plentiful ptarmigan; moose hunters will head for the heart of the national park. The westernmost areas of Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park are domi-nated by high mountains, deep fjords and glaciers.
Maps and hiking suggestions are available at the Tourist Information Office in Mo i Rana.
LOMSDAL–VISTEN NATIONAL PARKLomsdal-Visten National Park is an incredibly varied wilderness, ranging from fjords to vast forests and towering mountains. While there are some trails at the outskirts of the national park, you will have to find your own way in the high-mountain terrain. There are some mountain huts, but in most areas you will need your own tent. The national park covers parts of four municipalities: Vefsn, Grane, Brønnøy and Vevelstad.
Map and compass are an absolute must in Lomsdal-Visten National Park. Also bear in mind that much of the bedrock is gneiss, which absorbs very little water, and that the water flow in the streams and rivers may vary greatly. During heavy rains and the snow-melt, the rivers may become dangerously high.
For many excellent hiking suggestions and to down-load GPS way-marks, please visit Turkart Helgeland (http://www.turkarthelgeland.no/). For an overview of mountain huts and information on fishing in the national park, see http://lomsdalvisten.wordpress.com/.
BØRGEFJELL NATIONAL PARK
Børgefjell National Park is a magnificent mountain wilderness, covering 1447 km2. The west is domi-nated by tall mountains, deep valleys and numer-ous lakes. In the shadowy lower reaches, you may encounter patches of snow and ice that never melt. The dramatic southern areas have raging rivers and waterfalls, whereas the gently eastern tracts are dominated by rounded mountains and heathlands. The highest mountain is Kvigtind, 1699 m.
You need several days if you really wish to experi-ence the grandeur and tranquillity of Børgefjell Na-tional Park. Bear in mind that you may need a full day to reach the park’s interior, and another to get back. Be sure to bring warm clothes and raingear, and proper equipment to face changeable weather conditions. Børgefjell National Park is best suited for experienced outdoorsmen. Although much of the terrain is easily accessible, especially the valleys, you will not find the huts or lodges, marked trails or bridges you may be accustomed to in less remote national parks. Experience and a good map and com-pass are absolutely crucial!
Three traditional gateways to Børgefjell National Park are: from Tomasvatnet lake near Majavatn (about 2 km from highway E6), from Simskardet in the valley of Fiplingdal, and From Harvassdalen in Susendal near Øyum, Oksvollen or Storvollen. Maps of the national park may be purchased at the Tourist Information Office in Mosjøen.
IMPORTANT RULES IN ALL NORWEGIAN NATIONAL PARKS• Stop wherever you want, and camp for the night if you wish. But tidy up afterwards and take your rubbish home.• Feel free to go wherever you want, on foot or on skis. Anything with an engine is basically banned.• You may light a fire, but remember the general ban on fires in woodland between 15 April and 15 September. Show consideration when you gather firewood. Never leave a burning campfire.• You may pick berries, mushrooms and common plants for your own use.• Show consideration for cultural heritage sites, vegetation and animal life.• Fishing and hunting are allowed, provided it’s in season and you have a fishing or hunting licence. Never take live fish from one river or lake to an-other.

KAYAK ADVENTURES The Helgeland coast, with its tens of thousands of islands, islets and reefs, is considered one of Norway’s premier regions for sea kayaking. We invite you to explore narrow fjords, majestic mountains and the countless islands offshore. Find your own sheltered inlet, walk a be-ach washed by clean seas, spend a night in a traditional cabin by the sea, and restore your strength eating delicious traditional fare – let it all be part of your adventure!
Here are some suggested kayaking excursions. For additi-onal recommendations, please contact one of the Tourist Information Offices in Helgeland.

1. LOVUNDThe waters around Lovund are ideal for experienced kayakers. While much of the area is sheltered, there are plenty of opportunities for tougher adventures. During your stay, we also recommend a hike up Lovundfjellet, which offers an incredible panorama of the Helgeland coast from its summit. Suggested stay on Lovund: 2–3 days.
Description:Express boat from Sandnessjøen, Nesna or Stok-kvågen. Launch your kayak and explore the wa-ters north of Lovund, which are mostly sheltered. Should you yearn for adventure, you can challen-ge the larges swells of the open sea, and perhaps paddle around the entire island.
2. OFFERSØY AND TJØTTAThe area is sheltered and easy to access. Situated along the Coastal Highway (FV17), these places are ideal starting points for longer kayak expedi-tions along the Helgeland coast.
Description:Park by the bridge that connects Offersøy and Tjøtta, where you can easily launch your kayak. The eastern shore is usually sheltered, and you may enjoy excursions over to Rødøya or Bærøya, or explore the Vefsnfjord. If you stay to the left
of the bridge, you pass the fjord and can head to-ward Hestøy og Blomsøy; there you will find many large and small islands, and waters that are great for beginners.
3. VEGAThe Vega archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Area situated in the southern reaches of Helge-land, offers many kayaking adventures. You can even head for the same destination one day after the other, by a new route. Should you yearn for a more challenging adventure, the open sea is never far away.
Description Igerøy – Søla – Nes:Take the ferry from Horn near Brønnøysund to Igerøy on Vega. You can park your car on the quay and launch your kayak there. Follow the shore th-rough the narrow sounds, enjoying the dramatic surroundings. After a few hours you’ll reach Søla, an uninhabited island 12 nautical miles west of Vega, which is part of the Hysvær/Søla Nature Re-serve. Be extra careful if you light a fire. Continue your kayaking toward Nes on Vega; although most of this six-hour journey is in sheltered waters, you must be prepared for stretches of open sea, which can be challenging. Accommodation in a charming rorbu (book in advance), or pitch a tent. Allow plenty of time for the return journey to Igerøy,
perhaps spending a night on one of the islands en route. Alternatively hire land-based transport from Nes to Igerøy.
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONSThe Nesna Islands, Sleneset, Tomma, Lurøy and Rødøy are also excellent for kayaking. And in the interior of Helgeland, you can enjoy great rafting on the Susna, Eiteråga, Fiplingsdalselva and other rivers.
PRACTICAL INFORMATIONThe Helgeland coast offers magnificent opportuni-ties for kayaking – but be mindful that weather conditions can change suddenly. Never set out on a kayak trip without proper instruction and expe-rience. Sign up for one of the sea kayaking courses offered by professionals. Please see page 32, 35, 40 and 47.
For express boat and ferry schedules to attractive kayaking areas, please visit www.177nordland.no
Essential kayaking equipment includes an adjus-table light-weight paddle, a wet-suit or kayaking jacket, lifejacket, spray deck, water pump, and waterproof equipment bags.

FISHING IN HELGELAND
SEA FISHINGWith its deep fjords, magnificent island-dotted coastline, and offshore fishing banks, Helgeland is a paradise for any eager fisherman. Amongst the excellent fishing spots are currents, shallows, and the deeper parts of the sea. There are excel-lent fishing spots on the Finneidfjord, Vistenfjord and other fjords of Helgeland, where you can fish for cod, pollock and sea trout year round, while mackerel, wolfish, redfish and haddock are more seasonal.
FRESHWATER FISHINGThe lakes and rivers of Helgeland offer many ex-cellent angling opportunities – from Børgefjell Na-tional Park in the south to Saltfjellet-Svartisen Na-tional Park in the northernmost part of our region. There are large lakes, hidden lakes and mountain lakes far above the treeline, and you’re sure to en-joy the trout and mountain char prepared over the campfire.
Vefsn, Grane and Hattfjelldal alone have at least 2000 lakes within an hour’s walk from the road. Plathe’s Properties in Bindal is known for its large trout. Further north there is excellent fishing in lakes along Highway E12 near the Swedish border. On Tverrvatnet and Raudvatnet lakes, you may borrow a boat free-of-charge from Statskog – and beyond Raudvatnet there are additional lakes with excellent fishing. Umskartjønna is accessible for anglers in wheelchairs. Following Highway E6 northbound, you will discover a wealth of fishing opportunities, including Blereken, as well as the areas from Reinforsen and up toward Saltfjellet.
SALMON AND TROUTHelgeland offers plenty of opportunities for great fishing adventures, even though there are cur-
rently some limitations on salmon fishing, since various rivers have been treated with rotenone in order to eliminate a salmon parasite.
Røssåga river in the Municipality of Hemnes is renowned for excellent trout and salmon fishing. Fishing licences are sold at Korgen Camping. Sus-na river in Hattfjelldal also offers great trout fish-ing, as does the section of the Vefsna river above Laksforsen falls. Also in the river Åbjøravassdra-get in Bindal you may fish for salmon and trout. Plathe’s Properties is known for offering fishing adventures in magnificent wilderness well off the beaten path. More information on www.ranaelva.no and www.plahte.no.
PRACTICAL INFORMATIONBefore you fish for salmon in the rivers, you pay your fishing fee and disinfect your fishing gear. For further information and the dates for various fishing seasons, please visit www.inatur.no, www.dirnat.no or www.statskog.no.
For rules and regulations at sea, minimum sizes, catch export quotas and other limitations, please visit www.dirnat.no

WHERE TO GO FOR FISHING ADVENTURESOur website lists the companies in Helgeland that will help make your angling dream an unforget-table fishing adventure! www.visithelgeland.com
Helgeland is probably best known for its sea fishing, but inland are rivers and lakes that will impress even the most spoiled angler. Try your luck in secluded rivers, or in lakes where the only sound to be heard is the wind gently rustling the trees. And don’t be astonished when your dream of the big one comes true – for we have large fish aplenty!

Helgeland’s exciting culinary offerings reflect its complex cultural heritage and colourful history. Since time immemorial, the people of Helgeland have eaten a great variety of fish, shellfish and marine mam-mals. The region’s culinary tradition also includes game and livestock, dairy pro-ducts, cakes and baked goods.
When you’re on holiday in Helgeland, you can en-joy great seafood in restaurants on the islands and along the coast. Inland, there are a number of exci-ting farm restaurants.
The people of Helgeland are proud of their culinary traditions, and many restaurants base their menus on the freshest local ingredients of the season. Along the coast, delectable seafood dishes are pre-pared from the catch-of-the-day, featuring shrimp, mussels, crab and a variety of fish.
The indigenous Sámi culture gives reindeer meat a place of honour – and we invite you to savour its wonderfully complex flavour. In the autumn, some restaurants may serve moose, whether roasted, in a stew or soup.
You will invariably also find locally-produced sal-mon on the menus of Helgeland – whether as sus-hi, broiled, poached or baked. But also keep your eyes out for fresh char or trout from the inland rivers and lakes. We heartily recommend herb-grilled char or trout.
Bon appétit!

TORGHATTEN – THE MOUNTAIN OF LEGENDSThe renowned Mount Torghatten is pierced all the way through by a distinctive hole. You might feel very small, indeed, as you walk through the 160-metre long, 12–27 metre wide and 25–75 me-tre tall hole.
THE SEVEN SISTERSFollow the footsteps of Norway’s Queen Sonja and hike up one or several “sisters” – your reward is an unforgettable view! The panorama tells you why Helgeland is called “the realm of a thousand islands”.
THE ARCTIC CIRCLETo pass the Arctic Circle – 66 degrees latitude – is to enter Arctic Norway and the land of the mid-night sun. Driving northward on Highway E6, you cross the Arctic Circle on Saltfjellet. If you travel by sea, a globe on the island of Vikingen marks your passage into this magical realm.
VEGA WORLD HERITAGE AREAVegaøyan was awarded a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004 for the islanders’ unique and ancient tradition as guardians of the migrating eider ducks that nest here. After a new generation of young birds leave, the islanders col-lect the eider down, which is used to make the world’s best down duvets.
SVARTISEN GLACIERSvartisen is the second-largest glacier on main-land Norway, and 60 glacier tongues extend into the surrounding valleys. One of the most visited is
Austerdalsisen. Join an excursion that takes you by boat across Svartisvatnet lake, or take the shuttle boat across the Holandsfjord. Both boat rides are followed by a 3 km hike up to the glacier’s edge.
LAKSFORSEN FALLSLaksforsen falls is one of the most popular natural attractions in Nordland County. Every second, 700 m3 of water plummets down the 17-metre-high waterfall.
REMARKABLE CAVESJust north of the town Mo i Rana, you will find the amazing caves Grønligrotta and Setergrotta. The former is Scandinavia’s most renowned limestone cave and is beautifully illuminated. In Setergrotta, narrow passages lead to enormous mountain halls, white marble and strange limestone formations.
LOVUND – REALM OF THE PUFFINFar out at sea lies the island of Lovund, nesting site for Norway’s largest puffin colony. The sight of the puffins returning in the evening is unforget-table.
DØNNAMANNENMount Dønnamannen (858 m) seems almost hu-man, with its unmistakeable profile of an upward turned face. Well-marked trails lead you up to the summit.
THE MOOSE – KING OF THE FORESTAlstahaug and Leirfjord have some of the largest moose populations in Norway. At dusk and dawn, there’s an excellent chance for visitors to sight one of these huge, majestic animals.

This fascinating art project comprises 34 sculptures by 34 artists, each of which is displayed in a different municipality, including eleven municipalities in Helge-land. Artists from all over the world were invited to create these sculptures, which have been permanently installed at se-lected locations throughout the beautiful and varied landscape of Nordland County.
“HAIKU BATHTUB”, SØMNAThis sculpture by Irish artist Dorothy Cross con-sists of three parts, each of which is imbued with many associations. It is placed in Vennesund.
“STEINAR THE MONKFISH”, BRØNNØYSUNDThe Franco-Swedish sculptor Erik Dietman cre-ated this landscape installation of a 70-metre long stone fish. It is situated in the sound near Brøn-nøysund town centre.
“A NEW CONVERSATION”, VEGAThis three-part sculpture by Finnish artist Kain Tapper stands in Grimsøysundet, a sound north-west of the island Grimsøy, near the Igerøy ferry quay.

“THE ELF CASTLE”, HATTFJELLDALThis sculpture by Icelandic artist Hreinn Fridfinns-son, in the heart of the village, is made of alumini-um, granite and crystal.
“THREE FLAMES”, MOSJØENThis artwork by Icelandic artist Hulda Hàkon conjures three fires, with flames made of painted stainless steel. The sculpture is situated in the River Park, just outside the town centre.

VEGA– A World Heritage treasure
The wild, beautiful and friendly World Heritage Area of Vegaøyan is an archipelago that counts roughly 6500 islands, islets and skerries. The livelihood of the thriving local community is based on fishing, fish-farming, agriculture and tourism.
UNESCO named Vegaøyan a World Heritage Area due to the islands’ striking scenery and cultural traditions. In a wharfside building in the village of Nes, you will find the world’s only Eider Duck Museum (E-huset). The fascinating exhibition documents the islanders’ unique tradition and their role as guar-dians of the migratory birds that nest on Vega. For more information on the World Heritage Area, please see the ad on the back cover of this guide.
Naturally, Vega has much more to offer visitors. How about joining a moose safari, a culinary adventure at the shoreline, guided archaeological and biolo-
gical field trips, going kayaking or sailing in a traditional Nordland boat, visiting the coastal farm Vega Kystgård, hiking the trails or cycling the lightly trafficked roads? Take a boat trip to the World He-ritage Area or visit Ylvingen, the island of “Skyblue” and a beautiful destination with opportunities for great hiking and rewar-ding bicycle excursions.
For further information, please visit the Tourist Information Office in Vega or Brønnøysund (see p. 9).

VEVELSTAD– Small but lively
On the coast, Vevelstad has many cultural monuments; the first residents arrived in the Stone Age. The magnificent wilderness is a source of pride – half the municipality lies in Lomsdal-Visten National Park. Vevelstad is a 45-minute journey from the regional centre Brønnøysund.
In Vevelstad you can marvel at 4000-year-old petroglyphs, go kayaking on the fjord, follow well-marked wilderness trails, hike up Høyholmstindan, enjoy
great fishing and hunting, and go on bo-ating excursions. The beautiful Vevelstad church, built in 1796, and the folk museum in Vevelstad are well worth a visit.

Sandnessjøen is situated in the Municipality of Alstahaug, a mu-nicipality that has a long and colourful history. Chieftain Hårek of Tjøtta, Øyvind the Bard, Sigrid of Sandnes and the poet Petter Dass all hail from Alstahaug. Sandnessjøen became a transporta-tion hub for the entire region in 1899, when a steamer company set up offices here. Today there are direct flights to Oslo, daily calls by the Hurtigruten coastal steamer, scheduled buses, and ferries and express boats to many destinations.
The municipality is renowned for its large moose population – out in the country-side you may well sight one of these huge mammals at dusk. Consider a boat trip to the islands near Sandnessjøen, a visit to De syv søstre (The Seven Sisters moun-tain), kayaking, sailing, or a fast-paced excursion in a RIB raft. You’ve come to the right place!
For further information, please visit the Tourist Information Office in Sandnessjøen (see p. 9).

Dønna has a proud history, dramatic scenery and a rich fauna. The lush island of Løkta, northeast of the main island Dønna, is perfect for exploring on two wheels, and it has fine beaches. Dønna has ferry services to Sandnessjøen, and a bridge connects it to Herøy.
Be sure to visit Valhaugen, one of the largest burial mounds in northern Nor-way. It is topped by a marble phallus, a fertility symbol from the Migration Period (400–600 CE). Other key attractions include the 12th-century Dønnes church, containing one of Norway’s best-kept mausoleums. Nearby is a cul-
tural heritage trail up Dønnesfjell (127 m). For a grander view, hike the marked trail from Breivika or Teigstad to the top of Dønnamannen (858 m).
The Tourist Information Office in Sandnessjøen will gladly provide you with more information on Dønna. (See p. 9.)

The seemingly countless islands of Herøy offer an incredible setting for holi-day adventures, with ever-changing views of The Seven Sisters, Dønnaman-

The Tourist Information Office in Sandnes-sjøen will gladly provide you with more information on Herøy. (See p. 9.)

HATTFJELLDAL– The highlander realm
This municipality, one of Norway’s largest, owes its name to the distinctive mountaintop Hatten (the Hat). Hattfjelldal has a sig-nificant Sámi population, and the handicrafts of the indigenous people are treasured. The southern Sámi also have interesting traditional dances. The municipality’s main population centres are Hattfjelldal, Susendal and Varntresk. Hattfjelldal is situated on Rv73, about 30 min from Trofors.
This beautiful inland municipality has more lakes than residents, including Norway’s second-largest lake, Røssvatn. Popular hiking destinations include
Hatten (1128 m), and for experienced ad-venturers the wilderness of Børgefjell Na-tional Park. Be sure to see “The Elf Castle”, a sculpture in the heart of the village, and visit Hattfjelldal church, built in 1868.

Welcome to Vegaøyan UNESCO World Heritage Site– a visit on Nature’s own terms
Vegaøyan was awarded a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004 for the archipelago’s outstanding natural and cultural environment. Through more than a thousand years, the people of these islands have built nests for eider ducks and protected the birds. When the ducklings leave the nests, the soft eider down is collected and used to make the best duvets in the world. The people of Vegaøyan still continue this ancient tradition.
Visitors can enjoy guided boat tours to the old nesting areas and fi shing villages in the World Heritage area, giving them a unique cultural experience and a keen appreciation of Vegaøyan’s natural beauty. Vega offers great bicycling and kayaking adventures, as well as hiking trails into the mountains and along the shoreline. We recommend a visit to Nes old fi shing port, with its E-huset Museum, café, World Heritage Exhibition and Little Lånan. Also worthwhile is a trip to Ylvingen, an idyllic island with sheltered inlets, bike-friendly roads, and panoramic views from the World War II fortifi cation, Tyskerhåjen. For additional details, please contact Vega Tourist Information.

During the breeding season, dog owners are prohibited from bringing dogs anywhere near the nesting areas. Between 1 April and 1 October, all dogs must be kept on a leash.
