There was a king who had

twelve beautiful daughters.

They slept in twelve beds.

All the beds were in one

room.

When they went to bed, the

doors were shut and locked.

Every morning their shoes

were worn out.

The shoes looked like they

had been danced in all night.

No one could find out how it

happened.

No one knew where the

princesses had been.

The king said, “Any one who

can find out where the

princesses danced at night,

he could marry the a

princess. He would also

become King”.

The King said, “But whoever

tried and did not discover the

secret in three days, they

would be put to death.”

A king's son came.

He was taken to the room

next to the princesses.

where they went to dance.

They all fell asleep.

They died the same way.

One day an old soldier came.

He could not fight.

He had no job.

As he traveled through the

woods, he met an old

woman.

She asked him, “Where are

you going?”

“I don’t know”, said the old

soldier.

“But I would like to find out

where the princesses are

dancing”, the old soldier

said. “I would like to be

King”.

“Well,” said the old woman,

“That is not difficult. When

the princesses bring you

wine to drink, do not drink

it.”

She said, “You must pretend

to go to sleep.”
