SZEKSZÁRD

„One’s roots determine one’s life.
Old noble families fi nd it important
to return to the land of their ancestors.”

THE WINE-PRODUCINGREGION OF SZEKSZÁRD
HistoryOne of the Hungarian wine-producing regions with the richest tradi-
tions is the Szekszárd region. Albeit it’s roughly 2700ha vine-bearing
area places it among the smaller ones in Europe, historically it is
unquestionably one of the most important wine-producing regions of
Europe.
By the end of the 19th century, the Kadarka of Szekszárd represented
the top quality red wines. Interestingly, this vine-growing region is
among the few in Europe which survived the phylloxera blight with-
out any signifi cant damage. At that time, the French imported large
quantities of Szekszárd wines, as only this red wine had satisfi ed the
particular taste of nobility.
Today, this wine-producing region seems to undergo a revival, grow-
ing weightier in Hungary and gaining a stronger reputation world-
wide. We hope that soon it is our contemporary ambassadors from
whom we can quote words similar to those written by Franz Liszt, a
devotee of Szekszárd wines, in a letter 150 years ago: „I grasp every
opportunity to laud the unparalleled perfection of Szekszárd wine and
to avail to its popularity.” The words written by Pope Pius IX in 1865
about the Szekszárd wine: „this wine preserves my health and keeps
my spirits high” still apply.
Climate and soil conditionsThe uniqueness of the area comes primarily from climate and soil
conditions. Long winters and extreme, but dry summers, as well
as the quite thick loess stratum, create the ideal conditions for
vine-growing.
Atlantic, Mediterranean and continental elements, which infl uence
Hungary’s climate, meet here. The area is open to the east; therefore,
the warm continental currents travel freely to shape the character-
istic climate.
Soil structure features sandy, clay and rubble forest soil under thick
loess strata (some of which are as thick as 30 meters). This complex
soil lends to the rich spices and varied aromas, as well as the char-
acteristic and harmonious acids of Szekszárd wines.

TWICKEL WINE ESTATEAccording to the most recent information of the
Szekszárd Wine Guide, the Twickel Wine Estate
is one of the largest operating winery estates
in the Szekszárd wine-producing region, with a
vine-growing area of roughly 2700ha.
We believe that staying true to the utmost values
of nobility, and a mind-set bridging several gen-
erations, helps us to be a reliable and high quality
winery for a long time.
We make our wines with the deepest respect and
they help create the perfect moment once they
are opened: assisting a deep conversation, a ren-
dezvous, or evoking shared memories.
The history of the business operating on 200ha
can be traced back to 1993. Baron Georg von
Twickel’s mother, Mária Terézia, Countess Zichy,
came from the main line of the renowned Hun-
garian family of nobles, but was forced to leave
the country in 1956. She moved to Germany where
she met her future husband, Baron Clemens von
Twickel from North-Rhine Westphalia. Love for
her country and the Hungarians hadn’t faded in
the heart of Mária Terézia, Countess Zichy; af-
ter the regime change, they purposefully start-
ed to seek investment opportunities in Hungary
around the old Zichy estates. Both the Zichy and
the Twickel families have 700-year old ties with
agriculture, and the opportunities in the Sze-
kszárd vine-growing region excited their interest
instantly.
During the last decades, the winery had fi rst op-
erated under the name Liszt Winery, and then in
early 2010, it demerged from Szekszárd Zrt and
adopted the name Twickel Szőlőbirtok Kft. It is
our fi rm aspiration to attain a high quality and
maintain it for a long time.
Today Baron Georg von Twickel lives in the Ka-
jmád wilderness near Szekszárd, with his wife
and four daughters who now have their own roles
in the winery, having lent their names to our most
special wines.

THE WINERYOur vines are spread over excellent locations in the vine-growing
region. We attach special importance to viticulture, as we are well
aware that wine quality is decided out in the vine plantations. Our
vine-growing procedures combine tradition with modern technol-
ogy. This helps us reach our goal to preserve the character of the
wine-producing region and vine types in the wine. We follow the prin-
ciple of minimal intervention in the life of the wine as it develops. Our
essential task in treating the wine is to preserve the natural fl avours
inherent in the vine.
Our winery, located at the North entrance to Szekszárd, has a fer-
mentation capacity of roughly 4000hl for red wine and roughly 2500hl
for white and rosé wine. Our cellar system, cut into the hillside, hosts
150 barrels and 500 barriques aging our wines.
Our own bottling station has a bottling and labeling capacity of 2000
bottles per hour; thanks to this, we can reliably serve the demand for
the domestic and export market.
Vision of the future of the Twickel Wine Estate
In 2014, the Twickel Wine Estate renewed all the four of its wine fam-
ilies, placing greater emphasis on the standard Twickel brand name
as well. Our young team strives to build the brand purposefully both
on the domestic and export markets.
Thanks to the size of the wine estate, export quantity demands can
be served reliably. Moreover, our vines growing on our best lands are
used for making premium wines, which have found their way into cui-
sines in more and more countries. For years we have reliably served
our export partners with bulk wine tanks, as well as foreign restau-
rants that order a small number of bottles directly from us.
We are open to any new inquiry from foreign markets and we would
love to collaborate with distributors for our wines at excellent price
to value ratios. We pay attention to ensure that our partners have ad-
equate marketing support with our wines, and to make the excellent
Hungarian wines known widely.
11
The teaser products of the Twickel Wine Estate are the
members of the „Liszt” wine family. These wines refl ect the
character of the grape type and the Szekszárd vine-growing
region.
Franz Liszt was a friend and tutor to Count Geza Zichy, a
maternal ancestor of Baron Georg von Twickel. Count Geza
Zichy nurtured strong ties to music from his childhood, but
at the age of 14, he lost his right arm in a hunting accident.
Instead of succumbing to despair, the young count trained
himself to become a left-handed pianist. Franz List noticed
his talent and took the young piano virtuoso under his wing
and tutored him. Later, they gave several recitals together.
As a token of friendship, Franz Liszt composed his piano
work No. 456 specifi cally for left hand.

The gastro category of the Twickel Wine Estate is the Kajmád
wine family. Youthful, energetic wines form this family, where
the reserved barrique character and careful treatment of
the grape guarantee the excellent wine quality. The wine
family carries the special characteristics of the Szekszárd
vine-growing region, as well as the historical aristocratic
traditions. The name choice was not coincidental; presently
Baron Georg von Twickel lives with his wife and four daugh-
ters in the Kajmád castle near Szekszárd.

The colour of our most popular wine reminisces of summer wheat-ear, while its
aroma suggests cut grass, elderberry and almond fl ower. Properly chilled, it’s an
adequate pairing for any white fi sh and grilled vegetable meal.

Kajmád Rosé helps us experience genuine tropical waves at the end of the summer.
Its deep rosy colour and sour-cherry fl avour create a unique harmony in this wine. Its
harmony is at its best at 8 °C with salads, cheeses, and light paprika dishes.
Cuvée Szekszárd Dry Red 2011
This carefully selected Cuvée lights our days with its deep ruby red colour. Its

plexity. Open it at 18 °C and pair with beef and pork alike for a fi ne experience.
Merlot Szekszárd Dry Red 2011/2012

THE KAJMÁD

The premium collection of the Twickel Wine Estate is the
Gróf Zichy wine family, whose name was born out of Baron
Georg von Twickel’s respect for his mother. These wines are
made from grapes produced on the best positioned fi elds.
We make Gróf Zichy wines exclusively from the best vintag-
es of certain types. The low quantity per hectare is paired
with intensive grape selection and tender grape processing.
Wines are matured in the best barriques. Maturing in wood-
en casks takes at least twelve months, followed by maturing
in bottles for a long time before it takes its worthy place in
cuisine.
21
Blaufrankisch Szekszárd Dry Red 2012
This April marks the debut of our Blaufrankisch selection from the Zichy wine
family. With limited production and manual selection, we picked the grapes with
the highest potential. Its Bordeaux red colour evokes shades of episcopal purple.
Its aroma is dominated by strawberry, raspberry and Decs paprika. Its fl avours
are marked by wild strawberry, Cajun nuts and juniper, with a special almondy
green apple fi nish.
Syrah Szekszárd Dry Red 2012
The 4.5 ha Syrah plantation is located in the warmest fi elds of the spectacular
Bátaszék. This Zichy Syrah was born from the limited production vine-stocks
grown here. Maturing them in our nicest barriques, we took heed to balance
the best taste, the most brilliant fruit and most enjoyable barrique effect. When
these three features met, their marriage was bottled. Its deep cardinal red colour
is followed by an aroma of Eastern spices, dark chocolate and prune. Its harmo-
nious fl avour reveals wild strawberry, blue-berry and currants. Its long fi nish is
followed by a wonderful marzipan closing etude.
Merlot Szekszárd Dry Red 2011
The lightly inclining Farkasd fi elds of Bátaszék host the nicest Merlot plantation
of the Twickel Wine Estate. A strictly limited production is followed by a relatively
late harvest in the middle of October. The wine fermented to a complete dry-
ness is mostly matured in barriques and less in barrels. Maturing in barriques
highlights the high tannin content and leathery alcoholic taste, while the bar-
rel preserves its fruitiness. Its deep Bordeaux red colour is paired with aroma
dominated by raisins, Turkish honey and rosehip, followed by a fi nal aroma of
fl ap mushroom. Its fl avour combines dried apricots, hazelnut and thyme with a
medium fi nish.
THE GRÓF ZICHY

Good wines have a personality which can be empha-
sised by their names. This inspired us in our name
choice for our Baronesse wine family which encom-
passes our most special iconic wines. Irma, Tereza,
Filippa and Johanna are Baron Georg von Twickel’s
daughters. They lent their names to the top wines
of our winery; their exceptional character is shown
in that only the most extraordinary lots of our best
vintages can make it to this category. For roughly 10
years, we reached our third wine; in 2014 we bottled
an excellent Cabernet Franc bearing Filippa’s name.
The worthy ones are selected from premium wines
kept in 500 small barrels by periodic tasting. Practi-
cally, they are not available on the market; the Bar-
onesse experience can be enjoyed through the limit-
ed quantity available in the wine shop of our winery.
25
Baronesse Tereza Cuvée 2006
Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet franc types are married in excellent ratios
to make the fl agship wine of the Wine Estate, bearing the name of Baron Georg
von Twickel’s fi rst-born daughter. Its playful elegance seduces from the very fi rst
moment of tasting. It has an intensive and deep colour, while its aroma discretely
reveals the seductive, luscious spiciness of Syrah. Its fl avour suggests warmth,
charm and velvetiness. An extremely elegant wine with fi ne tannins and high
complexity, with great potential. A worthy companion for lighter venison (hare,
deer) and chocolate mousse, but it offers a spectacular experience by itself. Rec-
ommended at 14-16°C.
Baronesse Irma Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
This excellent selection Cabernet Sauvignon is a fl agship wine in our winery,
bearing the name of Baron Georg von Twickel’s second-born daughter. The grape
was harvested manually in the middle of October, carefully selected from the
Farkasd fi eld of Bátaszék with its outstanding characteristics. The healthy clus-
ters were placed in one of the gentlest fermentation tanks, where alcoholic fer-
mentation was controlled with the addition of a special yeast culture. Afterwards,
the wine was matured in fi rst-fi ll barriques for eighteen months, then bottled.
Baronesse Filippa Cabernet Franc 2011
The youngest member of the Baronesse family is the Filippa Cabernet Franc har-
vested in 2011. Its name honors Filippa, the third daughter of Baron Georg von
Twickel. It is made from grapes selected carefully as early as the harvest, treated
with particular attention all the way. Following a two and a half year maturing in
barriques, it is bottled for at least half a year before it acquires its fi nal brilliance.
Kept in barriques until the wood and fruit reached a perfect balance. As a thick,
powerfully alcoholic wine, but not ostentatiously so, Filippa is a perfect match for
our Baronesse premium wine family.
Baronesse Johanna
We still have to wait a few years before we see Johanna, but soon we will fi nd out
which types will make our next iconic wine.
