The Behavior Approach of Leadership
Ohio State Leadership Studies
• Consideration is the extent to which a leader shows concernfor the welfare of the member of the group.
• This factor is oriented towards interpersonal relationship, mutual respect and friendly.
Example : Zeti Akhtar Aziz defines that a good leadershipmust not only have good values, but need to have awesomebehavior.
• Good leader should not have ego-driven behavior but to befriendly and approachable like stated in the Ohio LeadershipStyle.
• Builds trust and fortifies relationship by possessing thegraciousness value in leadership style.
• Good leaders must be confident and should have clarity ontheir values for the welfare of the team members of thegroup.
Type of power
Personal power
Power from interperonal relationships between leaders and followers
Eg: she will reduce arrognce, sarcasm and agression in works. She keep a good relationships with all her staff.
• Expert power
When a leader has signifficant domain knowledge/skills
Eg: she will teach her workers about their tasks
Referent power
Influence gained by persuasion
Eg: she will appreciate for what her workers
do in any tasks. She also sometimes will
greet her workers when they bumped
together.
• Positional power
Comes when a leader has a legitimately
held position of author
Eg: she is a Governor’s of Central Bank of
Malaysia so definitely she got the highest
position.
Conclusion
As we review about Zeti Akhtar above, it shows that she is a
good leader in conduct of her organizations. Nowadays, we
can see that she still remains as a Governor’s of Central
Bank of Malaysia after about 10’s years. To be a good leader
is not easy as we thought, needs many skills or knowledge to
succeed. She also have many working experience before
she got what she have now. Based on her style of
leadership, we noticed that she is using the Ohio Studies of
theories. She is using this theories to make effectiveness in
her organizations. Last but not least, power also influence in
her style of leadership. She use the right type of power to
coercive or communicate with all her staffs. Hence, all of this
shows that she is one of a best leader in Malaysia also a
historical leader because she is the first lady being a leader
in a big organization. She inspired many woman out there to
being like her

or being liked but leadership is defined by results
not attributes.
