PRC Prefectural-Level Divisions - Special Administrative Regions

The next two levels teach you the subdivisions of the Special Administrative Regions 特別行政區 (SARs):• Hong Kong 香港• Macau 澳門

Hong Kong is subdivided into 18 districts 區. The districts are grouped into three areas:• New Territories 新界• Kowloon 九龍• Hong Kong Island 香港島

Macau is subdivided into 7 parishes 堂區 and 1 reclamation zone 填海區. These are grouped into 2 main areas, the former municipalities 市:• Macau 澳門• Islands 海島

Unlike Hong Kong’s districts, these don’t really serve an administrative purpose - they are just a remnant of Portuguese rule.

Macau SAR was divided into 2 municipalities (see previous slide), but these were scrapped in 2002.
