A Compositional Perspective
HSIU-CHUAN SUNG Liberal Arts Center, Da-Yeh University
No. 168, University Rd., Dacun, Changhua, Taiwan 51591, R.O.C.
ABSTRACT Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) is widely regarded as one of the most important
twentieth-century composers from Argentina. Argentine folk songs and traditional dance elements are
prolifically used within his works, especially in the form of adaptations of traditional melodies and
rhythms. The purpose of this study is to analyze Ginasteras Harp Concerto Op. 25 from a
compositional perspective. The discussion includes: (1) a survey of Ginasteras life and his various
compositional styles; (2) the compositional background and analysis of this work; (3) characteristic
applications to harp techniques and interpretation with regard to performance practices; and (4) a
conclusion.
