Abstract: the paper discusses the methodological aspects of the use of symbolic models for the formation of subject-specific skills of students in chemistry. It is shown that symbolic models can perform the following cog-nitive functions: descriptive, explanatory, predictive. Most effectiveness of the use of iconic models in teaching chemistry is observed together with a specially designed chemical problems. The results of the practical part of the study showed that students in the experimental group to a greater extent are subject chemical skills for productive-creative level.
