Good morning! Nice to see you. I would like to say that we have a lot of work to
do. I hope that you’ll try your best and do everything successfully.
To begin with I want you to listen to the joke (инсценирование шуточной
Department store. Mother with her son:
-I would like to buy my son a suit. Do you have something special?
-Wonderful suit from the last French collection, please.
-And it does not shrink?
-Madam, what are you talking about, it’s real France! Your boy will wear it to old age.
- Well, I buy.
The boy wears a new suit, they go to the street. In five minutes it starts to rain, the suit instantly
shrinks.
Mother , dragging her son's hand ,angry flies back to the store . The shop-assistant meets
them:
-Boy, how you've grown up!
Have you ever had similar situations in your life? As you can see, people always
want to look well and try to by modern things. But is it really necessary and what
directs our desire to look smart?
(P1:style, P2:fashion, P3: brand name, P4:clothes, P5: design).
You are right, today we are going to speak about fashion and go on a virtual tour to
a fashion center.
Warming up: fashion world is rather interesting, but to be in fashion we should
operate special concepts. Let’s revise them.
Do you know who creates fashion? Do you know any famous designers?
(P1:Pierre Cardin, P2:Christian Dior, P3: Donatella Versace, P4:Giorgio
Armani, P5:Valentine Yudashkin).
Right you are and I would like to add to this list such name as Vivienne Westwood.
Do you know something about her?
(P1: She is a famous British designer, P2: She is a businesswoman).
Vivienne is one of the most eccentric designers and she has also known for her
radical views on politics. Her first catwalk was shown in 1981 in London.
And our first visit - Vivienne Westwood’s workroom. You are welcome to her
master class. Listen to the interview and mark main rules of modern style creation
of this designer.
You know that fashion is not only what is popular now, but was modern in
different times in the world. Do you know something about history of fashion?
(Students’ answers: in Africa girls had metal rings round their necks to make
them longer; Japanese women wore special tight shoes that wouldn’t let their
feet grow bigger).
And now we’ll visit the second room and learn if fashion historians agree with
designer’s ideas according to the fashion rules. Famous Russian historian,
Alexander Vasiliev, agreed to organize a lecture about fashion in different decades
of the 20th century.
Well, the representatives of the 60th, who can tell us about this historical period?
The representatives of other periods please make notes. Later you will fill in the
chart.
As you can see fashion is changeable and sometimes we may consider it even
strange. Do you know interesting fashion movements? In our fashion center there
are not only workrooms, but also a shopping center. And our third visit- Camden
Town, great place to shop if you like clothes that are unusual. Before we go to the
center let’s think:
What do you know about British fashion?
What do you think British fashion is?
Do you have any British clothes?
Now let’s go and find out more about British fashion (просмотр
You have visited different interesting places at the fashion center, learnt a lot of
interesting information, and now I invite you to open free workroom to create you
own fashion clothes and have fashion show. Let’s remember the styles of clothes:
(Students’ answers: classical, business, casual, sporty, and smart)
Choose any style you like, arrange into groups and create your clothes.
You should not simply draw, but describe you item
(color, material, details), whom does it suit, for what occasions does it perfect, use
active vocabulary from Lesson 1, 2 Unit 4 of the book.
And now the last, fourth part of your tour - fashion show of your clothes. While
one group will present their ideas, others evaluate presentation (учащиеся
Imagine it is 2050 now and your children have to write about what their parents
were when they were teenagers. What would they write? (describe youth fashion)
(Home task)
Let’s remember what fashion is and how it is created before we can observe it.
(Students’ answers: designers work and create, historians make evaluation, then
it gets into the catwalk and then goes to the shop where we can buy clothes).
I am excited to work with you. You are smart boys and girls. You have tried
hard. Thank you for the lesson.

1960s After Mary Quant invented the mini-skirt, and Jackie Kennedy (the First Lady)
introduced the pillbox hat, both became extremely popular. The sleeveless mini
dress appeared in 1966. Also they wore big hats in very bright colors. False
eyelashes were worn by women throughout the 1960s, and their hairstyles were a
variety of lengths and styles. While focusing on colours and tones, accessories
were less of an importance during the sixties. Menswear was characterized by wide
ties and striped trousers, leather boots and even collarless jackets. This decade also
gave birth to the skinny jeans, worn by Audrey Hepburn.
1970s By the early 1970s, miniskirts had reached an all-time popularity. Jersey knits
(трикотаж), pullover sweaters, and long hair for both men and women
characterized those years. Platform shoes appeared on the fashion scene in 1971
and often had soles two to four inches thick. Wide-legged, flared
(расширяющиеся) jeans and jackets. By the 1980s, punk fashion and punk bands
had shown up in cities across the world. There was a Do It Yourself quality to the
fashion.
1980s This was the decade of Madonna, Michael Jackson, and extravagance and
extremes in style. Leggings, headbands and shoulder рads dominated. The mid-80s
continued the craze for designer jeans. The lace trend was getting more and more
popular with girls and women. Gloves, sometimes lace and/or fingerless, were
popularized by Madonna. The look of several popular TV stars helped to set
fashion trends among young and middle-aged men. Miami Vice was one such
series, whose leading men wore casual t-shirts underneath expensive suit jackets—
often in bright or pastel colours. The Thriller look which included matching
red/black leather pants and jackets, one glove and sunglasses was inspired by
Michael Jackson's record breaking album Thriller.
1990s The early 1990s saw a continuation of 1980s fashion: women wore tight-fitting
trousers, denim shirts, neon colors, oversized sweaters, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and
black leather jackets. Around this time in Europe and America it was also
fashionable to wear designer clothing displaying Italian or French labels (such as
Lacoste, Yves Saint- Laurent, Armani, Gucci, or Chanel) In the early 1990s flannel
shirts became popular. Men also wore straight-leg jeans like Levis, wool sweaters,
black leather jackets, anoraks, polo shirts, white Adidas trainers and Aviator
sunglasses popularized by rock star Freddie Mercury. In America suits went out of
fashion as men began to dress smart-casual and business casual, a trend started by
Bill Gates of Microsoft. Wide leg jeans, tracksuits and baseball caps worn
backwards became popular among hip hop fans.
