KHARKOV WAS ONE OF THE MOST FAVOURITE CITIES OF VLADIMIR MAYAKOVSKY. EACH TIME WHEN THE POET CAME HERE, HE WOULD ADMIRE THE FIRST CAPITAL. ONCE, WHEN HE WAS STANDING AT UNIVERSITETSKAYA GORKA AND ADMIRING THE VIEW OF KHARKOV FROM ABOVE, MAYAKOVSKY EXCLAIMED: HOW GREAT KHARKOV IS INDEED! BOTH THE DISTANCE IN MOTION AND IT HAS ITS OWN UNIQUE APPEARANCE! IT IS NOT SURPRISING THAT THE FAMOUS FUTURIST WOULD COME HERE 12 TIMES AND WOULD PERFORM IN FRONT OF OVERCROWDED AUDIENCE EVEN MORE THAN 12 TIMES. LENINGRAD WAS THE ONLY CITY HE VISITED MORE TIMES THAN KHARKOV.

For the first time Mayakovsky visited Kharkov in 1913. A 20-year old poet came here with his friends-futurists, David Burliuk and Vasiliy Kamensky. In the morning the guests went to the print shop where the posters for their performance were printed. They were surrounded by the workers who asked them to recite at least something. So the poets did what they were asked, gave free passes to all those who wanted and headed for the restaurant to have breakfast accompanied by the crowd. The poets arrival caused a stir in the restaurant. When asked who they were, Mayakovsky answered: Three Chaliapins. Then the guests were given a separate room and the restaurant was closed from the raging crowd.

In the evening the guests from Moscow performed at the Public Library (now Korolenko Library). Despite the sign: tickets are sold out, there were plenty of those who wanted to see the show (the performance of futurists

was called like that back then). The poets looked rather startling: they were wearing top hats, yellow pullovers were sticking out from their coats, and they had bundles of reddish sticking out from their buttonholes. Mayakovsky had a sign of the universal dynamics painted on his forehead. Kharkov performance was opened with a tea party. The organizers who had heard about scandals which accompanied Mayakovskys performances put some guard in the hall, the chief of police and two police officers. When Mayakovsky was about to give his speech he put a top hat on, having moved it to his back of the head. The chief of police at once stated a condition: unless the one in a yellow pullover takes the hat off, or I will close down your performance for scandalous behaviour. In general the show was a success; the delight together with swearing and whistling were normal state of the audience who were listening to the poet.

DETHRONEMENT OF THE BILLIARD KING

Mayakovsky played his unforgettable part in the opening of the billiard cabinet in Kharkov House of writers named after V. Blakitny. Back then, in January 1924 it was very difficult to find a good billiard table and Mayakovsky provided his assistance to the House of writers by selling his own home billiard of a great Leipzig brand. The poet brought the table himself and personally with a carpenters level watched it being installed by the specialists.

On the opening day the basement of the club was crowded more than usual. The solemnity of the opening was in the fact that the first one to take the cue was the poet himself. The one who beat him was to be proclaimed the billiard king of the Ukrainian literature. No one had doubt that Mayakovsky would remain the king. The fame of Mayakovsky as a billiard player was as great as his fame as a poet. But Mike Johansen himself volunteered to be his rival. He was also fond of billiards. Realizing this fact, Mayakovsky suggested playing for leopard crawl. People used to play like that when they wanted to defame the partner: the one who lost had to crawl on his/her stomach under the billiard table.

The game turned out to be intense. The poet was very close to win the game several times, but in the end the luck turned away from him. In the last game his rival scored eight balls in a row and he won. Mayakovsky crawled under the table. But the table was very low and thats why the poet simply got stuck with his head sticking from one side and his legs sticking from the other side. Johansen is a king! I will ask him for a start, I beg for mercy! cried the poet. This is the way, the great poet-futurist and billiard king, master of scandalous behavior and cloud in trousers Vladimir Mayakovsky was defeated in Kharkov.

The project of future Kharkov landmark

was a brainchild of the legendary

architects and was named Uninvited

Guest. It was this building which was

awarded at the special contest in 1925.

The aim of the consent was to choose

a building for placement of state trusts,

Industrial Bank, Foreign Trade and

State Trade of the Ukrainian SSR.

Only P. P. Rottert, who was a chief

engineer of the construction, managed to

embody such a challenging and significant

project. Under his direct supervision

Gosprom did not become a model of

practicality and utility of the buildings

of those times, but it became a true

monument of architecture.

As a symbol of constructivism

in the Soviet Union, the expressive

building of Gosprom represents a unique

monolithic construction, which was

built in record time. It took only four

years, 1 315 carriages of cement, 3 700

carriages of granite, 9000 tonnes of metal

and 40 000 square metres of glass to build

the Kharkov giant. The use of progressive

(for those times) technologies provided the

building with incredible strength: group

of tower-buildings of different height,

joint with passages, lessen oscillation of

the whole building. It is notable that the

same method is used for construction of

skyscrapers in seismic dangerous areas in

modern Japan.

At the moment of commissioning

Gosprom was the biggest building in the

USSR, with the area of almost 305

thousand square metres. But today, despite

the abundance of high-rise buildings,

Gosprom gives you the impression of

strength and power as it used to give 80

years ago, because the architecture of the

industrial reinforced concrete is timeless.

The author of this unusual project is French architect Paul Andreu. Thus, each petal represents separate hall: Exhibition Hall, Concert Hall, Opera Hall, Theatre Hall and foyer. The Center of Eastern art, as well as all the others in Shanghai, is an example of embodiment into life of those bold ideas, which make this city be a concentrate of world progress.

The whole transport infrastructure of Shanghai is more than modern. There are eight-lane roads with bus lanes here, electrobuses have routes around the city, they can recharge at bus stations, and seven-level automobile overpasses, each of which has inimitable design, are able to strike anyone, who gets into this city, with its functionality and good looks.

Does it make one wonder, that namely here, in Shanghai, the first superspeed noncontacting train in the

world was put into action? Shanghai maglev track (shortened magnetic levitation) joins the underground station Longyang Road with the international airport Pudong. Record speed of maglev is 501 km/h. Such train literally floats above the ground to have a trip on it means to feel all the might of up-to-date high technologies. In the future maglev track is planned to be built through the whole city of Shanghai, after that its length is going to be 176 kilometers.
