Conversation 1M: May I help you?W: Yes, I want to buy some shoes to replace the ones I’m wearing.M: What’s wrong with them?W: They are too old and shabby.M: I can see they have simply been worn out. Would you like the same color, more or less?W: Yes, and something a little less casual.M: How about this light brown pair? They are similar to what you have , but a little bit dressier.W: Yes, I was thinking of something along that line. I’ll try them on.M: They certainly looking charming.W: The trouble is they feel uncomfortable.M: Then try on this other pair in a similar style, but by a different manufacturer.W: These are much better. Do you have them in red?M: Yes. Would you like both pairs?W: Yes, if they won’t cost too much.M: Oh, no, they won’t. The second pair is half price. Shall I put them both in a box for you?W: Just the red. And the old ones. I’ll wear the new brown pair home.

Conversation 2W: Bank. Good morning.M: Hello. I’d like to know how to open a bank account here.W: Certainly, sir. How long are you going to be here for?M: Uh, twelve months at least.W: I see. Well , you need to be here for more than six months to open an account. You’ll need to come in and fill a form and show some identity. I mean identification.M: You mean a passport or a credit card?W: Um, a credit card wouldn’t be any good. A passport would be fine, or a driving license.M: That sounds fine.W: Oh, and you’d need to give us a couple of specimen signatures and some kind of financial reference from an employer or your university.M: Right. How long does it take until I get my check book and everything?W: Oh, it’s quite quick really. A week or so.M: Good, and is the bank open all day?W: From 9 to 3 Monday to Friday and 9 to 12 on Saturday.M: Thank you very much. You’re welcome.

Conversation 3W: What an elegant place! But can we afford it?M: I wanted the best restaurant for your birthday. And since you like French cuisine, here we are! Let’s begin with a cocktail and then look at the menu.W: I’d like to start looking at the menu right away because it always takes me a year to make up my mind. Any recommendations?M: I’ve never been here before, but everything is supposed to be excellent.W: Look! They have snails. But I wouldn’t dare to eat them. They make me sick.M: I feel the same way about snails. I think I’ll have roast duck. It comes with vegetables and potatoes.W: Sounds good, but since I love seafood, I’m going to take the salmon. And let’s have the salad after the entrée.M: Fine. We should have white wine with dinner and champagne with dessert since this is a celebration.W: Oh, and let’s don’t forget the cheese. There’s nothing like real French cheese.M: I can see already that this is going to be an enjoyable and delicious evening.

I’ll just turn right up here we’ll get there in a minutes or two.W: Thank you. I do appreciate that. It feels as if you have got a flat tyre. Are you sure your tyres are all right?M: Yes, madam. It’s this road. They keep on digging it up. I’m sorry about that, but you tell me to hurry and this is the shortest way.W: No, no. That’s all right. I was just wondering, that’s all. It smells as if the last person was smoking in here.M: I’m afraid to say “yes”. It was a young man. Though there is a “No Smoking” in the back, it doesn’t stop some people.W: I know it’s the same in the office. I hate it when anybody smokes there, but I don’t like to comment, because it might cause bad feelings sometimes.M: I know what you mean. Well, there you are. You’ve got plenty of time to check in and catch the plane.W: Gosh! That was quick. Thank you so much. Here’s £ 15. There’s No need to find me any change. Goodbye!M: Thanks, madam.
