Background
“Innovation and Technology” has been identified as one of the Six Industries where
Hong Kong enjoys clear advantages. Hong Kong has established ample resources
and experiences in the field of applied research and commercialization. To attract and
stimulate talented youth their passion and commitment towards the search of excellence
in technology and innovative applications are crucial for the sustainable development of
the “Innovation and Technology” industry in Hong Kong.
Based on this shared vision, China Development Bank Corporation and Virtus Foundation
Ltd work closely with the support of universities, research centers and enterprises to
establish the Excellence in Technology Innovation and Commercialization Scholarship
Award Scheme (“ETHICS”).
Aim
The scheme offers internship opportunities in Hong Kong and Mainland China research
institutions and enterprises to outstanding Hong Kong university undergraduates, with a
view to broadening their horizons, enabling them to have a deeper understanding of their
future professions from different perspectives, and encouraging their pursuit of excellence
in technology and innovation.

The Scheme
The Scheme 2013
The scheme 2013 offers 20 scholarships, comprising the following components:
1. Summer Internship Programme
Part I July – August 2013 8-week internship in research institutes
in Hong Kong
Part II July – August 2014 8-week internship in research institutes
or enterprises in Mainland.
The Scheme will offer internship posts in hosting organizations in Hong Kong and
Mainland China. It will provide each successful candidate with an allowance of
HK$1,400 per week and HK$1,500 per week during internship periods in 2013 and 2014
respectively, and cover transportation costs for one round trip travelling to/from Hong
Kong and Mainland China as well as accommodation costs not exceeding HK$2,500 per
week for internship periods in Mainland China.
Upon completion of the internship, the awardee will be required to provide documentary
proof from the hosting organization certifying his/her attendance and satisfactory
performance during the internship period.
2. Group Coaching Programme
There will be two group coaching sessions conducted by professional consultants for
successful candidates. These coaching sessions are building blocks of the programme.
The subjects will be closely related to the objectives of the Scheme.
Nomination
Eligibility
The Scheme is open to application by any full-time, non-final year undergraduate
(irrespective of nationality or possession of right to abode in Hong Kong) studying at one
of the University Grants Committee (“UGC”) funded universities in Hong Kong who meets
the following criteria:
• Undertakingascience-relateddegreecourseprescribedbytheUGCincludingscience,
engineering and technology;
• Acumulativegradepointaverage(GPA)of3.0(orequivalent)orabove;
• Strong interest in technology innovationandcommitment topursuing technology-
related careers;
• WillingnesstoservetheHongKongcommunity;
• Independentthinking,observant,goodverbalandwrittencommunicationskills;and
• Well-roundeddevelopmentandpastparticipationinextra-curricularactivities.
Selection Process
• ThePresidents,Vice-Chancellorsordeansof facultiesof localuniversitieswillbe
invited to make nominations. The number of nominations by each university will be
allotted according to the number of students pursuing studies in science-related
disciplines funded by the UGC.
• Eligibleundergraduateswhoare interestedintheSchemeshouldfill inanapplication
form (download from www.ethics-scholarship.org.hk) and submit it to the student
affairs offices (or equivalent) of their universities. Nomination related matters, such
as nomination criteria, procedures and deadlines will be at the discretion of the
universities.
• Universitiesshouldsubmitnominations to theSchemeSecretariatno later than28
February 2013.
• NomineeswillbeinvitedtoattendaninterviewbytheAwardeesSelectionCommittee
of the Scheme.
• UponselectionbytheAwardeesSelectionCommittee,successfulcandidateswillbe
notified by the Scheme Secretariat through their universities.
