The event is intended to increase awareness of the genetic deciphering of autism and art therapy as a treatment. Nowadays, about 67 million people around the world have been diagnosed with autism. In the United States, one of every 68 newborns has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, as for now the definitive causes of autism are still unclear. Most people with autism are characterized by impaired verbal and non-verbal communication, restricted and repetitive behavior, and interest in only a limited range of activities. The autistic mind is beyond the reach and comprehension of the rest of the crowd. It is through art that the common public is granted a rare access to the world, feelings and emotions, loneliness and joy, of those who suffer autism. Harvard Alumni Association, Beijing Genomics Institute, Chinese Biopharmaceutical Association USA, Pratt Institute digital art, the International Students Psychology Association at Columbia University, Manhattan School of Music, New York Film Academy, Japanese Cuisine & Bar and Law offices of Zhiyu Hu support the event, among other institutions. On the day of the event, about 40 pieces of photographic work, paintings, and new media art on autism and its treatment will be exhibited. During the charity gala in the evening, a two-and-a-half hour featured performance will provide the guests with a unique opportunity to understand autism both from a scientific perspective and in an experiential way. The exhibition will be open to the public from 3pm. The evening charity gala and interactive performance will invite guests in the fields of arts, media, biomedicine, education, finance and business in New York, who share the same concern for autism and caring for the patients. The performance will include piano trio, contemporary ballet, classical guitar, vocal and documentary screening. The show is designed for the guests to personally experience the gradual inner transformation in the process of recovering from autism, and thus to have a more profound appreciation of the healing power of art.
