Presentation

Simon: I don’t have my English book here. Can I use your

book?Daniel: Yes, you can. Here it

is.

Simon: Can I borrow your ruler?Daniel: Sorry, you can’t. I

don’t have one. So, we use ‘can’ to ask

our friends for permission

( 许可 ; 准许 ; 允许 ).

Presentation

Millie: It’s very hot in the classroom.

May I open the window?Mr Wu: Yes, you may.Jimmy: May I go out and play

tennis, Dad?Dad: Yes, you may. But you

must finish your homework first.

Amy: May I take the newspaper out of the

reading room?Miss Li: No, you can’t /

So, we use ‘may’ to ask teachers, parents and other

adults for permission. It is more polite to use ‘may’
