中國大陸原本沒有獅子，只有老虎，原因是因為漢朝佛教傳入中國裡面有一位文殊菩薩下坐著石獅子，所以從此以後獅子就傳入中國，成為中國廟裡的獅子。

There is no lion in China originally. Since Buddhism was introduced into China, Han Dynasty. In Buddhism, there’s a Bodhisattva named Manjusri, who is transcendent wise, riding on a blue lion. Therefore, lion was also introduced into china thereafter.

北方獅 Northern Stone Lion

北方獅居住黃河中下流，都有著古代王朝首都地，北方獅主要的特性威猛、凶悍、肌肉兇大。

Northern stone lion shows up in the middle and lower reach of the Yellow River where ancient times capitals, imperial palaces and temples were built. The main features of northern lion are overwhelming fierce, and muscular.

南方獅Southern Stone Lion

南方獅大部份都住在福建、廣東、廣西、台灣等。特色都有著有大耳朵、動態的蕉卷狀的尾巴。Southern stone lion mostly appears in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Taiwan. Big ears and waving curl tail are their notable appearances.

石獅子（公）南方獅Southern Stone Lion - Male

公獅子是腳下玩球 , 身背彩帶，彩帶上繫有一枚古錢。象徵男主外的觀念。身上的東西都是象徵金錢的財富。

The male lion has one paw on an embroidered ball called a “xiù qiú“, and wear a strap with an ancient coin on it. Things on the body are all symbolically represent wealthy.

石獅子（母）南方獅Southern Stone Lion - Female

母獅子身邊則會有一隻小獅子，腳下也有一顆球，表示女主內照顧家庭為主！The female is identical has a cub under the other paw to the male. Meaning women should take good care of the family.

石獅子風格與擺放

大里天宮廟石獅子是南方獅的風格，具有動感的姿勢，表情也很生動。在中國的傳統中，常常聽到男左女右也顯示男尊女卑的是心態所以在公獅廟宇的左側，而母獅在右側。In DaLi, the stone lions of the temple of Jade Emperor are southern style. Both are carved in actively shape and vivid appearance.In Chinese tradition, left represents man, the other side means woman, which associates with women are inferior than men. Therefore, male lion is set on the left side of the temple, and female one would be on the right side.
