hackathon is the only annual youth
and diversity-focused hackathon, 100%
organized and operated by students of
color, in the country. hackathon is
held on the campus of Huston-Tillotson
University in East Austin, Austins oldest
university and only HBCU (Historically
Black College and University). hack-
athon takes place annually during SXSW
Interactive, one of the largest digital and
tech events in the world. The focus of the
two-day hackathon is to educate and
engage millennials of color, empowering
them to reach their full potential as more
than just consumers of technology but
as creators, innovators, and disruptors of
tomorrows tech and digital spaces as well.

in todays technology pipeline, by serving as
a conduit for social and informational capital,
connecting talent-seeking companies to
phenomenal millennials of color.

Through hackathon, we expose high
school and college students to the many
dimensions of the technology and innovation
industry. At the start of the program, stu-
dents are paired with mentors who serve
on teams as either Innovators, Developers, or
Designers. Each team is tasked with develop-
ing a mobile app that will solve a problem
in business, education, entertainment, or
health and fitness. Students are also exposed
to various dimensions of the technology
world. Not limited to coding, students are
encouraged to bring interests in the creative
(design/art), development, and technical
aspects of app creation as well. On the last
day, students pitch their developed apps
to a panel of experts, where they are given
advice and feedback to help prepare them
for real-world scenarios.

13, 2016 on the campus of Huston-Tillotson
University (HT). Located in the heart of East
Austin, HT is a federally designated HBCU with
a student body comprised of 70% African-
Americans, 19% Latinos, 3.7% Caucasians, and
4.5% international students. HT is committed
