NLM 設立緣起 1836 年成立 ( 前身溯自 Joseph Lovell) 1840 年 Dr.Thomas Lawson
編寫第一部目錄 (134 冊圖書館藏 )
1864 年出版第一本目錄 (2100 冊藏書 )
歷屆館長的貢獻 拉威爾 (Joseph Lvell) NLM 之前身可溯自拉威爾擔任美國陸軍軍醫署署長時代 ( 1818-1836 ) 。
因拉威爾認為參考資料十分重要，便在其署長室中設立圖書館。
1836 年拉威爾逝世後，該館開始正式申請購書經費，因之，是年 (1836) 可算是 NLM的成立年代。
歷屆館長的貢獻 比爾林斯 (John Shaw Billings) 蒐集資料之功勞。
(由於其在撰寫論文時，曾遭遇到資料蒐集方面的困難，因此在館長任期內，積極地蒐集資料，除了最新的出版品之外，也蒐集一些早期的資料。 )
因此在 1868 年的目錄中，已記載有 7000 冊圖書 ( 包含 15-18 世紀的圖書 231 冊 ) 。
其重要貢獻如下 :1. 於 1880 年出版 Index-catalog 。2. 於 1879 年出版 Index-Medicus 。3. 遷館 : 將圖書館於 1866 年由署長室遷至福特劇院，後於 1887 年遷至華盛頓新蓋的一棟三層樓的建築物。
4. 自 1870 年開始對軍人以外的一般讀者提供服務。
歷屆館長的貢獻 羅格斯 (Dr. Frank B. Rogers) 由 1946 年馬克尼 (Joseph McNinch) 接任館長後，推薦另行選派。因馬克尼覺得歷任館長均為軍醫，普遍說來皆欠缺圖書館經營的學養，因此在政策上無法有明確的方針，因而向軍醫署長建議，改以受過圖書館學訓練的醫科專家來擔任館長之職。
1949 年接任館長，其任期內之貢獻 :1. 建立館藏發展政策。2. 研訂分類、編目與標題系統。3. 自 1950 年起出版了〝 Current list 〞 ( 類似 Index
Meicus) ，售價便宜且具時效。
NLM 之改名過程 1836-1921: 陸軍軍醫署圖書館 ( The Library of the
Army Surgeon Generals’s Office ) 1922: 陸軍醫學圖書館 ( The Army Medical Library ) 1952: 三軍醫學圖書館
( The Armed Forced Medical Library ) 1956 年 8 月 : 由艾林豪總統批准該項法案，正式改名為「國家醫學圖書館」

NLM 之任務與角色
身為國家醫學圖書館 , NLM 更具有以下六種多元化的角色 --圖書館的圖書館資料庫的製造者 NLM 類表與 MeSH 的編製者和維護者生物醫學資訊之相關研究與發展的領導者各種研究計畫經費的贊助者各種教育訓練的提供者
圖書館的圖書館 NLM 提出聯外計畫 (outreach programs)
使全國的醫事人員了解 NLM所提供的資訊產品和服務
促進全國的醫事人員可以查檢、利用生物醫學資訊
提供電子資料庫檢索的訓練協助全國醫事人員發展新的資訊尋求行為藉由提供具權威性且新穎的資訊提升醫療品質
圖書館的圖書館透過 NN/LM來執行聯外活動
NN/LM ： National Network of Libraries of Medicine 之簡稱 , 分為四個層級
NLM (Library’s Library)區域醫學圖書館 8個 (Regional Medical Library)資源圖書館 >140個 (Resource Libraries)基本醫療單位圖書館 4582個 (Primary Access

資料庫的製造者
NLM 為全球最大的醫學資料庫製造者 MEDLARS 系統目前所提供的資料庫已達 4
0餘種 ( 全球的使用者可透過網際網路，利用 PubMed免費檢索其資料 )
NLM 將其資料庫賣給資料庫代理商，讓他們加上自己設計的檢索介面，而以另一種面貌供使用者檢索醫學資訊
NLM 類表與 MeSH 的編製與維護
1951 年， NLM 出版了一套醫學方面專用的分類表，即“ Army Medical Library Classification” ，就是現今 NLM 分類表前身
NLM使用此分類表做為館藏主題分析的工具
同時製作醫學期刊論文索引時，也採用MeSH來標示文獻的主題

將美國衛生部 (National Institute of Health ，簡稱 NIH) 和全美各地實驗室的基因研究成果儲存起來，製作成資料庫供人檢索( 如 :GenBank 和 Human Gene Map)
NCBI 之主要任務研發儲存、分析分子生物、生化和遺傳學相關知識的自動化系統
研究利用先進的電腦資訊處理技術，去分析生物上重要的分子結構與功能
宣導生物科技，並鼓勵醫學研究人員利用相關的資料庫和軟體
蒐集 全世界的生物科技相關資訊
各種研究計畫經費的贊助者
NLM 的館外計畫部門 (Extramural Programs Division) 提供經費支持各項可使生物醫學知識被有效地管理、傳布和利用的研究計畫與訓練活動

全國線上訓練中心
配合 1997/06/26 起 NLM 開放PubMed 、 IGM免費檢索其 MEDLINE 資料庫
NN/LM 的“全國線上訓練中心”特別為各地的醫學圖書館員、醫事人員設計了一系列免費的教育訓練課程
NN/LM 的教育訓練課程內容 為從來沒有用過MEDLINE的人設計 (2天 ):針對圖書館員、資訊專家，介紹以 web 為介面透過 PubMed 及 IGM查詢 NLM 的各式資料庫
為以前使用指令式檢索語言查檢MEDLINE 的人設計 (1天 ):指令式檢索課程。
為需要化學和毒理方面資訊，且懂得指令式檢索語言的人設計 (2天 ): 化學 /毒理方面的專門課程。
專為有檢索經驗的醫學圖書館員和資訊專家所設計 (4小時 ):針對醫學專家所提供的以 web為介面之檢索課
醫學圖書館員實習計畫 對象 : 具有圖書館學碩士學位MLS 者 目的 : 培訓美國未來醫學圖書館界的優秀館員 時間 : 為期一年，可自由選擇第二年是否在
NLM實習 訓練 :介紹一系列將應用在國家級圖書館的資訊科技和管理技巧，預期受訓者將有以下收穫 -- 學習將來對圖書館界與資訊科學界有重大影響的概念，技巧，

PubMed provides access to bibliographic information which includes MEDLINE as well as: The out-of-scope citations (e.g., articles on plate tectonics
or astrophysics) from certain MEDLINE journals, primarily general science and chemistry journals, for which the life sciences articles are indexed for MEDLINE.
Citations that precede the date that a journal was selected for MEDLINE indexing.
Some additional life science journals that submit full text to PubMedCentral and receive a qualitative review by NLM.

NLM Gateway One target audience for the Gateway is the Internet user
who is new to NLM's online resources and does not know what information is available there or how best to search for it. This audience may include physicians and other health care providers, researchers, librarians, students, and increasingly, patients, their families, and the public. Other users may find the Gateway useful for an overall search of NLM's information resources. Some searchers may locate what they need immediately, while others will utilize the Gateway as an adjunct tool to other NLM search services such as PubMed® and MEDLINEplus®.
NLM Gateway
MEDLINE® (Medical Literature, Analysis, and Retrieval System Online) is the U.S. National Library of Medicine‘s (NLM) premier bibliographic database that contains over 12 million references to journal articles in life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. ( 即 PubMed)
OLDMEDLINE contains citations published in the 1960 through 1965 Cumulated Index Medicus and the 1957 through 1959 Current List of Medical Literature. OLDMEDLINE covers the fields of medicine, preclinical sciences, and allied health sciences.
LOCATORplus is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's online catalog, and includes over 800,000 catalog records for books, audiovisuals, journals, computer files, and other materials in the Library's collections.
NLM Gateway
MEDLINEplus is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's web site for consumer health information. MEDLINEplus includes over 560 health topics, a medical encyclopedia containing an extensive library of medical images as well as 4,000 articles about diseases, tests, symptoms, injuries and surgeries, and two sources to more than 9,000 prescription and over-the-counter medications.
ClinicalTrials.gov provides patients, family members and members of the public current information about clinical research studies. It is a registry of clinical trials for both federally and privately funded trials "of experimental treatments for serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions."
NLM Gateway
DIRLINE (Directory of Information Resources Online) is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's online database containing location and descriptive information about a wide variety of information resources including organizations, research resources, projects, and databases concerned with health and biomedicine
HSRProj provides project records for health services research, including health technology assessment and the development and use of clinical practice guidelines.
