Glamorous Summer in Jesus Welcome to Taiwanese Fellowship Monthly! Thursday Discussion Group: A Review In the past few months I have sometimes felt that the progress of the Thursday evening meeting and the material we have been discussing have suited each other very well. It was Charles Chen, now in Taiwan for a few months, who originally suggested that we try a new and different activity on a different day. Perhaps there were people who might attend but who didnt find Saturdays convenient? Maybe there were those who wanted something a bit less structured than our Bible studies and worship? Or more speculative? And maybe, since the Fellowships main meeting is only every second week, there would be friends who wanted to meet in the between times? We didnt know the answer to those questions, so we began to meet at Lumen on Thursday evenings. Pizza and a glass of good red wine were always on the menu, and friendly discussion that carried us through much of the Spring season. Our numbers were small, and so it was a natural step to decide to move to my apartment at Holloway Road. To guide our discussion we decided to choose the DVD of the BBC series A History of Christianity, written and narrated by Diarmaid McCullough. McCullough, an Oxford University professor who describes himself as a critical friend of Christian faith, brought us a view of Church history squeezed into six hours. His big picture view helped us to see the high tide and low water points in Christian discipleship. Above all, we saw the amazing diversity of Christian experience. How this story of the God-Man, Jesus Christ, has captured the hearts, the imaginations and the lives of countless men and women. McCulloughs approach is deliberately not evangelistic. And yet there was no avoiding the big questions of faith and culture and history. Our group too would swell and shrink as members other commitments intervened; sometimes as few as two, but also as many as eight, or even twelve! This gave the happy sense of an open group and the anticipation of surprises you never knew who would come and what direction the discussion would take! To me, our discussion matched perfectly the motto of the 10th century theologian, Anselm of Canterbury: fides quaerens intellectum (faith seeking understanding).

And still it continues! By John Scott
