When Rama, Sita and Lakshman were travelling through the forest during their 14
years exile, they once met some devotee. All sat under the shade of a tree.
O Lord, inquired a devotee, could you tell us the difference between good and bad?
Lord Rama smiled and said, The difference between good and bad is just like the
difference between a sandalwood tree and an axe.The devotee was baffled. O Lord, could you elaborate?
Like all good things, the sandalwood tree gives freely of its fragrance. And like
all bad things, the axe only knows how to cut and destroy. Even when the axe cuts
the sandalwood tree, the sandalwood gives freely of its fragrance making everyone
happy, explained Lord Rama.
Is that not unfair? queried the devotee.
It may appear unfair, said Lord Rama, but the chopped pieces of sandalwood
are rubbed to make a paste and this paste is applied on the forehead. The axe, blunt
after having cut the tree, is put into the fire till red-hot and beaten to make it sharp
again.
With rapt attention, Gurujis disciples heard how Lord Rama had differentiatedbetween good and bad.
We are often dissuaded from the good path because of the injury we sustain at
the hands of those who are bad, Guruji said. But as Lord Rama explained so
beautifully, the good never stop giving freely of their fragrant actions even though the
bad hurt them. But then good is always rewarded. And the bad are always punished.

photos submitted for global photo contest of the World Association for Christian
Communication (WACC). The theme of this particular competition was PortrayingGender, and photographers were invited to submit photos portraying women or men
in ways that offer new perceptions about their roles and responsibilities.
Manish worked as a helper of a trucker and only learned to use a camera in 2008
when he joined the Centre for Human Progress (CHP), an organisation that works to
improve the lives of people susceptible to HIV infection such as truckers, and drug
users. It was CHP director Ash Pachaurls bright idea to involve a group of truckers
in a photo-documentation project. He says the project was just one small effort being
made to strengthen the response and the enabling environment for such communities.
Cameras were rented for them and they learned to take pictures that told a story. We
regularly reviewed progress and provided feedback. Besides the technical aspects,
they also learned how to take photos that would depict ideas they wanted to convey,explains Pachauri. Last year, the truckers photos were exhibited in a well-received
show entitled Expressions of Empowerment held at the India Habitat Centre.

Research suggests it is not what you watch, it is what age you start and how long
you watch that has a detrimental effect. In many ways Teletubbies, or any othereducational programme for children, could be as physiologically damaging as a violent
video game.
So, how does watching something on a screen whether TV, computer games or
surfing the internet have a negative impact? It is because we are instinctively
transfixed by television. It elicits the orienting response our sensitivity to movement
and sudden changes in vision or sound. Studies have shown that infants, when lying
on their backs on the floor, will crane their necks around 180 degrees to watch. Our
attraction to looking at anything bright and fast-moving is an evolutionary mechanism,
a survival instinct.
These images on screen trigger what psychologists call attentional inertia we
are dazzled and cannot take our eyes off the screen. The same behaviour is seen insome animals.
But it seems we pay the price for tapping into these primitive urges. Scientists
have observed effects ranging from the immediate release of hormones into the blood,
which can contribute to long-term health problems, to actual physical changes in the
brain and learning disorders.
