Stretch your legs and get ready to start. There are many places to run in New York City. The best places are in the city’s parks. Go to the nearest park and find a path for running. Worksheet 3 Nouns and Pronouns

Nouns Nouns are divided into common nouns and proper nouns.

1. Common nouns Common nouns are words for people, animals, things or ideas. * Here are some words for people. trainer, manager, barber, police officer, farmer, teacher, engineer, etc. * The words for your relations are nouns. grandfather, father, son, uncle, cousins, nieces, sisters, mother, etc. * The words for fruits, vegetables, animal, places, objects, tools and machines are nouns. watermelon, grape, lettuce, pumpkin, elephant, kangaroo, restaurant, swimming pool, computer, airplane, etc. 1.1. Most nouns are countable nouns. We call them countable nouns because they refer to

people or things that you can count. When we are talking about only one person, animal, place or things, you can put a or an before the noun. Ex. A doctor, a panda, an ice cream, an umbrella, a rainbow, etc.

Countable nouns can be singular. When we are talking about one person, animal, place or thing, you use a singular count noun. We say that these nouns are singular.

Ex. A bungalow, a sparrow, a worker, a train, etc. When we are talking about two or more people, animals, places, or things, we have to make the count noun plural. We say these nouns are plural.

* Plural nouns usually ends in –s. Ex. a giant = giants, a camel = camels, an island = islands, an owl = owls, etc. * When the last letters of singular nouns are s, ss, ch, sh, x, owe usually add –es to form the plural. Ex. a class = classes, a bush = bushes, a dress = dress, a wish = wishes, etc.

Page 10: 10 ภาคผนวก ก - Chiang Mai Universityarchive.lib.cmu.ac.th/full/T/2552/teng1052jl_app.pdf · Some nouns are called uncountable nouns. We call them uncountable because

91

Page 2 * With some nouns that end in –y, we change y to i, and add –es. But if there is a vowel before –y, we just add –s to form the plural. Ex. a toy = toys, a monkey = monkeys, a lady = ladies, a body = bodies, etc. * With some nouns that end in –f, we change f to v and add –es. Ex. a wolf = wolves, a half = halves, a bookshelf = bookshelves, etc. * The plural of some nouns is the same as the singular. Ex. an aircraft = aircraft, a deer = deer, a sheep = sheep, a fish = fish, etc. * The plural form of some nouns is different from the singular form. Ex. a goose = geese, a tooth = teeth, a mouse = mice, an ox = oxen, etc. * Some nouns are always plural. Ex. pyjamas, trousers, jeans, pants, sunglasses, scissors, shorts, etc.

Some nouns are called uncountable nouns. We call them uncountable because they are words for things you can’t count and uncountable nouns are always in singular form. Ex. Electricity, food, information, bread, silver, jam, rice, wine, dust, etc.

2. Proper nouns Proper nouns are special names given to people, places and things. They always begin with a capital letter. 2.1 People’s names are proper nouns. Ex. Snow White, Santa Claus, Michael Jackson, Harry Potter, Mum, Dad, etc. 2.2 The names of months, festivals, countries, capital cities are proper nouns. Ex. January, Sunday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Thailand, Bangkok, Thai, Korea, Soul, Korean, etc. 2.3 The names of famous places and buildings, oceans, lakes, seas, rivers and mountains are proper nouns. Ex. the statue of Liberty, the Great Wall of China, the Sydney Opera House, the Pacific Ocean, Mount Fuji, the Chao Praya River, etc.

Pronouns A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a common noun or a proper noun. 1. Personal Pronouns The words I, you, we, they, he, she, it are called personal pronouns. They take the place for people, animals, places or things. Ex. My name is Lisa. I am ten. Here is my mother. She works in a bank. Here is my father. He is a baker. Here is out cat. It likes fish. Timmy, you are a greedy cat. Here are Michael and Susan. They are my brother and sister. Michael, Susan and I often go to the playground. We play football there. * In each of these examples the personal pronoun is used as the subject of the sentences. The subject is the person, animal or thing that does the action shown by the verb. The words me, you, him, her, it, us and them are also personal pronouns for people, animals, places and things. Ex. I am in the kitchen. Mum is teaching me how to cook. Oh, Lisa ! What a mess ! Mum told you to be careful. Where is Michael? Everybody is looking for him. Here is Mrs. Lee, my teacher. All the children like her. The floor is dirty. Dad is mopping it. Uncle Harry picked Mary and me up and took us to the cinema. Here are your sandwiches, kids. Put them in you schoolbags.

* In each of these examples, the personal pronoun is used as the object of the verb. The object is the person, animal or thing that receives the action shown by the verb.

3. Possessive Pronouns The words mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs are called possessive pronouns.

We use possessive pronouns to talk about things belonging to people. Ex. This bat is mine. Tom, where’s yours? This skateboard is his. Helen has lost her kitten. Is this kitten hers? This is our neighbor’s car. But where’s ours? I’ve got my sandwiches, and here are yours. Lisa has eaten her lunch, but Jane and Marry haven’t had theirs yet. * Possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs have the same meanings as possessive determiners (my, your, his, her, its, our and their). But they are used differently. * Possessive determiners come before nouns. For example, we say: This is my bat. That is your bat. This is our cat. * Possessive pronouns can stand on their own. They are not used before nouns. For example, we say : This bat is mine. That bat is yours. This car is ours. * Its is not usually used as a possessive pronoun; we use its as a possessive determiner before a noun. For example, we say: The cat carried its kittens into the garden.

Merry Christmas

Ever since I could remember, I have spent Christmas at my grandmother’s house. The house where is full of comfort, warmth, and happiness. I have always thought about my impressionable memories from my childhood. They made Christmas very special to me and my family. It is a time for my family to get together, share stories, laugh, and even cry. My most memorable Christmas is one from my past. I was about six years old. I sat in class on the last day of school before Christmas. I waited the bell to ring. As the bell rang, I ran out of the class and got home. I couldn’t wait to see my grandmother, my cousins, and my uncle. I miss them so much.
